Part 10

Inside the Haunted

Part 10

--------------------------------

I looked at Emily as if I had never seen her before.

“You were with ‘Him’ on that night when the ship wrecked?” I asked. She nodded, but there was a look of disgust on her face.

“Of course, I didn’t know of his plans then…” she said gruffly.

“But how will seeing what happened in the past affect the future, the present, right now? How will it help me stop ‘Him’?” I asked, my words tumbling over each other.

“Because. ‘He’ may not be who you’d expect.” Emily said mysteriously.

“But now Madigan, we must travel back to that night.” Emily said, grabbing my wrist. With a wave of her hand, a large, dark, and gloomy portal appeared in front of us. Emily stepped towards it, but I hesitated. I was a little hesitant about going into this thing. What if I could never get back to the present?

“Madigan, come on! You must see who ‘He’ is!” Emily said, tugging me towards the portal. I nodded quickly and gulped. It was now or never. Emily stepped in first and I stopped again in front of the portal. All I could see of Emily was her pale, freckled hand holding my wrist. With a great sigh, I stepped through.

-------------------------------------

“AHHHHH!” I screamed, my voice echoing through time. I was falling through the air, seeing the past in front of my eyes. Everything in the world, all of its history was unfolding in front of my eyes. It would be so breathtaking and amazing if I wasn’t plunging to my death…or so I thought. I landed with a thump on an indescribable ground and looked up. Where in the world was I? There was a sudden flash of light and I was sent spiraling somewhere. The next thing I knew, I landed hard on my feet onto a wooden dock beside Emily.

“Owww…my ankles.” I groaned, bending down and massaging them. Emily held a finger to her lips.

“Shhh…you must be quiet.” She said. I straightened up again and gasped. I had seen this event before! Everything was recognizable! The elegant ladies fluttering fans in their faces, the gentlemen dancing along next to them and the lonely girl standing by herself on the dock…Emily. I waved to the past Emily, but she didn’t seem to see me.

“Oh yes, I almost forgot. In the past, you and I are oblivious to these people so we aren’t tempted to change the past to improve or destroy the future.” Emily said wisely. I dropped my hand to my side and nodded. This was definitely strange. Then I got a sense of déjà vu as I saw a thick black cord.

--------------------------------------

“Emily, I know what’s going to happen next!” I said breathlessly. I had dreamed about Emily and the passengers’ death.

“Very good. But do you know how it happened?” Emily asked me. I shook my head and she pointed to the other side of the dock behind the ladies and gentlemen. I saw a figure there with a large knife. I gasped in horror as the knife swung down and cut clear through the cord. It swung through the air, speeding along the dock and killing the people (except for Emily) one by one. I ducked down when the cord came my way, but then I realized I couldn’t die here with Emily in the past. The Emily I was with looked sadly at her past self.

“Poor me, about to die an innocent death.” She said and I gasped.

“Who killed you Emily?” I asked, but Emily silenced me. I saw two men stride up to Emily and take her away down the hallway to somewhere. We followed her to Emily’s room where the two men were laughing hysterically at the past Emily. I gasped at what I saw. They were beating her senseless and then when she became unconscious; they strung a rope around her neck. My stomach jolted uncomfortably and I knew I didn’t want to see this.

“Emily, let’s go.” I said. Emily stood there and watched, crystal tears pouring down her face.

“Madigan, I was only twelve when I died. Did you know that?” she asked me. I shook my head quickly. They dragged the unconscious Emily to her closet while we stood and watched. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know what happened then.

-----------------------------------------

“Madigan, I’m sorry you had to see that, but it was for your own good.” Emily whispered to me. I was silent.

“It’s okay…what’s next?” I asked, changing the subject.

“Well now we have to move on to identifying the men who killed all of us, and why.” She said. I shuddered at the thought, but if it would help me stop “Him”, then I would see anything I had to.

“Okay, let’s go.” I said. Emily nodded and grabbed me by the wrist again. Once again I traveled through the past, but the sensation didn’t last as long. Emily and I landed in a dark room with a large table and some chairs sitting around it with people inside. They seemed to be having a meeting of some sort.

“Okay, so everyone knows the plan?” the man sitting at the end of the table said; he seemed to be the leader, but I couldn’t see his face, or any of the others. The other men nodded their heads silently and filed out of the room one by one. The leader however stayed behind. The door opened again and in came a woman with a very revealing red dress on. She slung her arms around his neck and kissed him on the cheek.

“Hello darling.” She said thickly. She had a very rich-sounding Spanish accent.

“Francesca, how nice of you to be here.” The leader said. Something about that man’s voice seemed…familiar.

“I’m with you wherever you are baby.” She said lovingly.

“Ewww…gross.” I said, smiling. Emily looked my way and shut me up.

“The plan is in affect honey. We’ll be rich soon.” The man said. He suddenly shuddered violently and convulsed.

----------------------------------------------

“Ooooh, here’s some more coming Francesca.” The leader said, sighing deeply and happily.

“Emily, what’s happening?” I asked quickly.

“Madigan, some of the passengers just died, and I’m soon to die myself. Think about this now…think about ‘Him’.” She said. I thought long and hard about what Emily was talking about. The people just died…and the leader is supposed to be ‘Him’…

“Emily! They just received souls!” I gasped. Emily nodded.

“And what do they do with them?” I asked nervously. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to know or not.

“Well, they keep them to become immortal. But they also need a lot of people to do so, unless they have a very strong hearted person with a good, strong soul.” Emily said. It suddenly started to make sense.

“That’s why he wanted me and you. Right? Because we’re good people, we have good strong souls and hearts, and he needs us to become truly immortal.” I said. Emily nodded.

“But what about Francesca?” I asked.

“Well, I could tell you…but you could also find out for yourself.” Emily said. I crossed my arms and nodded. I would wait, but impatiently. All this mystery was killing me
