Chapter Five
The Barn
The last few days of the week flew by and the students rejoiced at Friday. The weather was bitterly cold. Thursday night had blanketed Quinland with a veil of frost with the promise of a blanket of snow in the near future. However, while Friday was still very cold, the sun was high in a perfect blue sky with a few clouds lazily drifting on the wind. It would be a clear night, if not cold, but still a good night for a barn party.
Lasha wrapped her coat around her tightly as she exited the school building with Lisa at her side.
“So we’re going to The Barn, tonight?” asked Lisa, adjusting her glasses.
“Looks like it” answered Lasha.
“It should be fun, you haven’t gone in while, Lasha” said Lisa.
“Yeah I know, I just wanted to avoid Abby. She always gets on my case, its so annoying” replied Lasha, already having second thoughts on going. Abby was always at any social event, and being in a small town, a barn party was an event in itself. I can’t keep avoiding the little piglet; I need to stand up to her, thought Lasha.
“Maybe she won’t notice you, so cheer up. We’re going to have fun; I hope I win something in the raffle. I never win, but I can hope. Oh! Kip is playing tonight” Lisa said excitedly.
“Kip, as in Fang’s friend?” asked Lasha confused. When does Lisa get happy about him? She thought.
In turn the little Lisa blushed, “Well, he plays in Fang’s band as bass…and well, I see him all the time at the motor-cross competitions…so…yeah” mumbled Lisa looking away from her friend.
“You go to motor-cross?” asked Lasha shocked. I guess this explains why she is away on some weekends, thought Lasha, and what is she blushing about …Kip? …Oh!
“You like Kip” stated Lasha dumbly.
“Shut up!” cried Lisa hiding her face that was tomato red now.
A devilish smile worked its way on Lasha’s face, “Oh my god, you do like Kip. Wow, never would have guessed” said Lasha.
“Stop it!”
“Admit it”
“Okay, I like him. He’s nice, and funny…and…yeah” mumbled the girl “but I know he’ll never notice me”
“Come on Lisa you don’t know that. I mean it sounds like your stalking him, with going to his motor-cross things” joked Lasha.
“Am not, its interesting”
Yes, it was a fun fact that Kipper Wests was active participator in motor-cross. While Fang had his music as a hobby, Kip enjoyed messing with motorcycles. It was his passion, and from all the competitions that Lisa had witnessed, her beloved was good at it. Little, shy Lisa never missed a race that had Kip in it (A true die-hard fan of the sport).
“You can’t say anything about this, Lasha, especially to Kathy” said Lisa seriously. Kathy was one of the people in their group of friends, but the brunette could be annoying, loud, and a blabber mouth.
“Okay, Lisa. Your strange infatuation with Kip is safe with me” swore Lasha, putting her hand over her heart in vowing.
“Shut up Lasha!” cried Lisa turning red again.
“What, you never said I couldn’t tease you” laughed Lasha as the two girls walked to the student parking lot.
The daylight hours of the afternoon started to fade in the wake of early evening. The sun’s orange glare was low in the sky, the mountains in the distance already swallowing the glowing orb. The once white clouds that floated in a blue sky, changed to purple puffs in the orange stained sky.
Lasha pulled her jean jacket closer to herself as she exited her home.
“Try and be back before eleven, sweetheart” Lasha’s father called at the door.
“Okay, dad” called Lasha as she walked to the side of the house to her truck. The teenaged girl climbed and once again cursed the heater for not working.
Why when its getting cold the damn thing decides to die? Thought Lasha bitterly as she turned on the vehicle and made her way down the road.
Ten minutes of driving brought her in the vicinity of Lisa’s house. Like the Berks, Lisa’s family own property out of way; the Petigure family owned a cow farm. In the gloom of the evening the massive barn of the Petigure Farm came into view; a towering structure that dominated the horizon. To Lasha it was a landmark to show where to turn.
After a while the countryside all seems to blend together, and it begins to be hard to see the differences in anything. That was the curse of country life; everything remains the same, never changing, thought Lasha.
From season to season, from year to year, Quinland would never change. The town would be forever stuck in the same setting. That’s why the children would always leave, why waste your life in this place where nothing happens. Lasha had to agree; she didn’t want to end up like her parents and have Quinland be a womb and a tomb; be born here and die here.
In any case, Lasha made her way up the dirt road to Lisa’s house. The windows in the old, brown, three story home; gave a warm yellow glow that kind of resemble one of those Christmas cards that show a warm, happy home, covered in snow. Though the house would look like that during the holiday season, since the Petigure family was so big. Lasha didn’t have a big family. Dad was an only child and mom’s sister lived in New York and hardly visited (something about never returning to a hick-town). Most holidays it was only Lasha and her parents, not that she didn’t enjoy it, but a large warm family sounded nice.
The truck stopped in front of the home, no sooner did the truck come a stop did Lisa popped out of her front door. She quickly hopped into the truck the two girls were off.
The Barn had no other name but “The Barn” because that is what it was, a large old, weathered barn that stood a little ways from town on an open field. There is hardly anything to do in a small town, so the youth has to get creative to entertain themselves.
The old structure belonged to the town more or less, so everyone considered it public property with no real use, well, until the teenagers got a hold of it; dubbing the barn a teen hangout. So, instead of banning the use of the barn to restless teenagers the local government laid down some rules. The Barn would be used every weekend, with a local officer keeping an eye on things, and the local schools and churches would have functions. The end result was a place for the teens to hang out.
By the time the girls got there, the field was full of cars. Teens from the three schools in the county were walking about in the glow of light posts. Lasha and Lisa got out and made their way to the action.
Barn parties were fairly organized events. The local church sold BBQ, which currently filled the air around the barn, and ran a raffle. One of the three schools would sell baked goods and drinks (Unfortunately for Brandywine, Keegan was selling tonight), and one of the local bands would play inside the barn. Currently, the music coming from inside the barn was from a DJ till the band was ready. A dart board and horse shoes were set up on the side of the barn and inside there were a few billiards. City kids may find this all to be pretty primitive, but to the kids of Quinland this was the closes thing to night club they were going to get.
The two girls wondered around and met up with some friends, things were going okay till good old Kathy opened her mouth. To Lasha, Kathy was an okay person(in small doses) but the thing was that the girl had to be the center of attention, and more annoying still was that she had a new problem for everyday.
“So who are going to Home-Coming with? I probably won’t be able to go” started Kathy.
Here we go, thought monotonously. The girl rolled her eyes at what was to be another Kathy’s Story Corner. Of course, this went unnoticed by the rest of group, as they all gathered around to hear what Kathy had to say.
“I was going to go out with Jake, but my dad is like against it, because when me and Jake we’re fighting last week; he came at night to give me blue roses to apologize. I was so shocked, but still made so I threw them in the trash, but then he was on his knees begging, and I couldn’t say no, so one thing led to another and we started to fool around…”
A few gasps were heard.
“But, then my dad came in and he found us, and he was so mad. Jake had to jump out my window (her room is on the second story), but then dad went after Jake with a rifle. Thank god that Jake got away, but then dad came back and he hit across the face and told never to see Jake again, and I have no idea what to do” finished Kathy.
Wow, I wonder what channel has this soap opera on, thought Lasha, Seriously, blue roses, no such thing, jump out second story window and be able to run…come on who would believe…
“Oh my god, Kathy, I’m so sorry. What are you going to do” exclaimed a member of the group. Soon the other girls started to console poor Kathy.
Apparently, I stand corrected. Good grief, are we that starved for gossip. At least Lisa isn’t buying into this, thought Lasha. Lisa was looking with longing at the bake goods table, completely tuning out Kathy and the others. Lasha was having thoughts on cutting out altogether. Well, Kathy you captivated another audience, but I must bid adieu. In which Lasha did. She could go look for Fang, which was better than listening to Kathy make crap up for attention and watching the others eat it up. Lasha gave warning to Lisa that nodded as she made at break for the bake goods table.
No one will notice my disappearance, thought Lasha dully, and she was right. The teenaged girl slipped from the group un-noticed as she wondered away.
It would appear that every teen in Quinland was out tonight, because the place was crowded.
How the heck am I going to find Fang in this? Thought Lasha. Her thoughts were interrupted as a hand was laid on her shoulder.
Lasha whirled around to become face to chest with a boy. He towered over Lasha as least six-feet, with short blond hair that had mini spikes pointing upward. The boy was built like Fang, with tone arms and chest from what Lasha could see with his tight white T-shirt on and worn blue-jeans. He looked down at Lasha with deep blue eyes that held amusement in them.
“Hey Lasha, long time no see” stated a deep voice.
“Um…hi…” uttered Lasha. The boy looked familiar, but Lasha had no idea from where.
“You don’t remember me? I’m hurt” said the boy in mock hurt.
“Um…um…I remember…you’re…” fished Lasha.
“Gray…Gray DuPont…remember?” the boy probed
“Oh! Yeah…I remember now…” Oh boy do I remember, thought Lasha. Gray was one of the football team members that fought with Fang a year ago. While Fang came back to Brandywine, Gray didn’t. People said he transferred to Keegan (the traitor, since Brandywine Badgers and Keegan Wolves hated each other with a passion).
“Hey…how you’ve been?” asked Lasha awkwardly. She didn’t know Gray well, and to be honest, his presence was more unsettling then Fang’s. Something about the boy rubbed Lasha the wrong way and she wanted to end the conversation quickly.
“Good, can’t complain. You here alone?” asked Gray.
“No, I’m with some friends. I’m kind of looking for one” said Lasha, hoping to be on her way.
“Really, aw, can’t spare some time to catch up with an old classmate” said Gray his hand returning to Lasha’s shoulder. The gesture made Lasha uncomfortable and the way Gray’s eyes looked over Lasha’s body made worried. I need to get away, thought Lasha.
“Well, I really need to go” said Lasha making an attempt to pull away from Gray’s grip. However, the girl wasn’t successful, his grip tighten, freezing the poor girl in place. Now Lasha was scared.
“Come on Lasha, walk and talk with me” smiled the boy.
Crap! Crap! Thought Lasha franticly, Okay don’t panic, lots of people around. Who the hell does this guy think he is?
“Lasha?” came a male voice. Lasha turned her head and thanked the heaven above. Fang was walking up to her. As the boy neared he spotted the other boy and swiftly positioned himself by Lasha’s side. Fang’s eyes were narrowed as he glared at Gray. Needless to say, the hand on Lasha’s shoulder dropped in a hurry.
“Gray” growled Fang, his shoulders tense.
“Fang” replied the boy, his voice harsh.
“What hell do you think you’re doing?” spat Fang, his voice barely repressing rage. Lasha had never seen Fang so mad, even when he fought with Kyle.
“Just talking to Lasha, is that a crime” growled Gray his tone laced with vicious mocking.
The atmosphere between the two males was tense, like any false move and the two would lunge at each other. Poor Lasha was caught up in the middle, she dared not move.
“Stay away from her” growled Fang, his tone low and dangerous.
“You gonna make me, little prince” mocked Gray. Fang fisted his hands, his strong muscles tense with the anticipation of violent movement. Gray was no better, a nasty grin spread across his face, his toned bodily shaking with barely suppressed vicious intent. The air was buzzing with so much energy that you couldn’t cut it with a knife. Lasha knew that any second the two male would go in battle.
Things can’t get worse, thought Lasha. Now we all know that those are famous last words maternal, because, any situation can get worse. To Lasha’s fear, the situation got worse.
There must be something that goes into the air, because when two males are about to fight, other males gather. Maybe, men are just more prone to violence or perhaps there is some primal switch that is turned on. Whatever it is, even before the scent of blood is released into the air, other males know when there’s a fight going on and they want in on some level. Why, well as the two male that were prone to fight, Gray’s friends were coming onto the scene. Seeing there comrade in trouble, they we’re more than ready to attack.
The situation was dangerous now and needed to be defused in a hurry. Lasha’s heart pounding, she braced herself for the hell about to break loose, when…
