Chapter 10

“Hello?” The voice was scratchy and hoarse.

“Hey!” Warren couldn’t keep his excitement out of his voice.

A slight pause like the flicker of lightning across a cloudless nighttime sky. “Hey you!” Jace was awake now. Having realized the person calling after two a.m. wasn’t some stupid drunk, but his boyfriend, the original tired state disappeared instantly. “Warren,” He couldn’t be aware of how he’d said the other boy’s name. Just so breathless. Just so light and…happy. “You. Did. So. Great!”

Warren smiled into the phone. “Thank you….” His teammates were steadily filing onto the bus in a loud and boisterous mass. Yells and cheering were still going around as well as sharp high fives and some good natured horseplay. “…I wish I could have seen you after the game.”

“Yeah, I knew you had to stick with the team.” On Jace’s end, Warren could hear the low shifting of sheets as Jace moved around. “I don’t care how you feel about the game. You have to know I’m proud of you.”

Hot blood shot up into Warren’s cheeks, he gripped his phone tighter and ducked his head. He pressed his forehead against the seat in front of him, feeling all the more excited and breathless at Jace’s words. “Thanks Jay. Did you get any pictures?” He asked in a demure tone.

A soft snort.“ Of course, I got pictures. Tons, millions, maybe even a mountain’s worth of pictures…” That gorgeous smile seemed to cross the distance and caress the tired jock. “J.D. looked so hot. God, those pants they make you wear…”

“What?!” Some of the guys looked at him for a splint second before going back to their raucous celebrating.

“I’m just teasing.” Jace laughed steadily. “I’m an evil, evil boy.” The jock found his breathing easier, but not completely free of his sudden spike jealousy. The pair continued to talk as the bus traveled back to Westlaw. Though surrounded by a group of active people on a moving bus in the night, the conversation felt strangely intimate. If Warren had his way, he’d be with Jace, talking, laughing, touching—just a bit, kissing those lips. His thoughts were taking his body to the place it wanted to go. He shook himself out of it, because jacking off in the bathroom of a coach bus was the least appealing way to get rid of his now aching erection. Just a bit of will…just a little bit.

So absorbed in Jace’s words, when the seat beside him shook from a sudden addition of heavy weight, the oh-so tiny cell phone slipped from his hands. “Shit!” Warren dove between his feet, fingers and hands frantically searching for his line to Jace.

The unseen assailant shoved off against Warren’s side with a half muttered, half yelped “sorry”. His fingers finally grasped the sleek little device. “Hello. Hello. Hello?!” He panted.

“Calm down--” Jace was really getting a kick out of Warren’s nervous state. “Are you sure talking to me isn’t keeping you wound up?”

Warren shook his head, but realized Jace couldn’t see him. “Yeah.” A yawn came after that. Hell, he was tired, batter and more than sufficiently bruised.

A twin yawn responded to his. “I’ll talk to you if you talk to me?”

“Deal.” Warren settled deeper into his seat. The sound of Jace’s low chattering drowned out the ambient noise. Warren inserted a word into the conversation here and there. The plan lasted for ten minutes before each was asleep. Hopefully, dreaming about the other.
