Chapter 9 - A Spat

I walked out of the bedroom, wearing a pair of never-before worn pajama pants. The wounds of the whip had long dissapeared into nothingness, and the needles in my nipples made me ache. Loni looked up from the sofa and frowned “You really don’t have to keep them in if you don’t want. I was just trying to be tough on you.”
“Oh no, I quite like the idea, but maybe not as thick of gauge as this. I may have some rings in a box. They suit me, don’t you agree?”
“Alexia, come on. Stop it. I know you’re doing this to get to me.”
“No, I really do like the idea. If I had thought it would be as invigorating as this, I would have done it to myself a long time ago.”
“Stop it.”
“Why? Because you actually did something I liked for once? Fuck, if you aren’t mister can’t-make-up-his-mind!” And with that, Loni huffed off into the guest room, closing the door.
“And you call me a woman.” I said under my breath, before walking into my bedroom.
I rummaged through the boxes of things I had kept from my previous conquests. I knew I had bought dozens of peircings for women over the years, and also knew I had kept a few of the rings as souviniers. Finally I found a banker’s box filled with earrings, necklaces, bracelets and, luckily, 14 gauge nipple rings. I picked them out of the box and took a look at them, they glimmered silver in the dim light of the room. The ball within them was made of hematite. I took out the needles, and slid in the circles of wire. I walked to the full length mirror and examined the rings, before putting the balls back into them and nodding to myself “Yes, Loni, you’re right. I’m doing it to get to you. I would not taint my body with metal unless there was good reason. And you’re as good a reason as any to do such a thing to my perfection.” I smirked and walked out of my bedroom once more. Loni was still in the guest bedroom. I knocked.
“Go the fuck away, spaceman.”
“Loni, come on out, you’re being childish.”
“ I said go a-fucking-way!”
I walked in and he was laying on his back on the bed, scowling at the ceiling. I looked up there.
“What did the ceiling ever do to you, that you’re staring death at it?”
“You’re a fucking asshole, you know that?”
“Why?”
“Because you did that to manipulate me. I know you well enough, you’re just like me.”
“And you think I’m manipulating you because of the sex?”
“No, I think you’re manipulating me because you see a flaw in my personality. One that you have, yourself. You just don’t show it as well as I do. It pisses you off to see someone who can be truthful with himself, and you go off and try to manipulate it out of them.”
“What do you think I see?”
“You see your own need for recognition. That’s what this whole damn thing is about. Recognition. Fuck, you don’t have to sit there and deny it. You want the power, the infamy, all the world talking about how evil Alexia Fucking Winters is.” I stood in the doorway and leaned against the frame. Inside, part of me was screaming.
“And another thing, mister Came From Fucking Space, your bullshit powers are weak. I knew I was in that elevator, I just couldn’t do anything about it. I wasn’t even able to be scared.”
“So? It got you down the building faster and it saved me from hearing your whining about walking so damn much, which I knew you were going to do if you didn’t have someone take your hand like a child and guide you.”
“Pompous. You’re pompous and you can’t even admit when you’re afraid you won’t make an impression on the world.”
“And I can say the same for you. The best thing to do is to take it all with some quiet dignity. You wouldn’t, though, because you know nothing about that.”
“About what?”
“Dignity.” I walked out of the room, closing the door behind me. He was being a baby, pinning his problems on me. We’ve had fights like this before, but none so serious as this one. Somewhere, deep in my subconcious, a bit of me was crying. Another part was screaming, and another was imagining what Loni would look like as a throw rug. I went into my room, pulled the sheets off the bed, applied new ones, and laid down, closing my eyes and faced the door. I knew I shouldn’t have been so rough to him, but in all things, there is overstepping of bounds.
Loni came in about an hour later, and crawled into bed. I laid still, my eyes closed. He whispered “I’m sorry, Alexia, I didn’t mean to be so cruel to you. Forgive me?” and he rolled over, passing out. He smelled like he had finished off the three-quarters full bottle of whiskey. I rolled to face him and brushed his face with the back of my hand, whispering softly “I forgive you, Loni. Just don’t be such a prick.” I put my hand on his chest and fell asleep.

The next morning, he saw me off to work again, smiling and being as bubbly as ever, digging through the fridge, telling me his latest dream. I smiled and nodded as usual, packing a lunch of chicken and rice pilaf. He turned around and hugged me around and I held up my arms, blinking out of surprise.
“You forgave me last night. I heard you.”
“Yeah, maybe I shouldn’t have. You’re acting like a complete tool again.” I said humorously.
“Even so, I still can’t help but be happy. You really are something else, Al.”
“Whatever, Can you let me go? I’m going to be late for work if you keep slacking off and staying in your birthday suit like that!”
“Eh? What do you mean?”
“You are coming with me today, aren’t you?”
“What? I thought it was too dangerous!”
“Well, I changed my mind. Come on, get dressed, we’ve got to go across town in less than an hour, and traffic is shit this time of the day.”
“Alright, I’m going!” he said as he raced off to get dressed. I chuckled and shaked my head.
