Are We Breaking Up?

Ara - You are right!! I was originally going to use \'Eiko\' from Final Fantasy 9, but then in the last minute I changed it to Rikku, which for some reason I found more recognizable. When I changed Eiko, though, I hadn\'t changed IX to X. So, you are right!!! Thanks!

Chapter 10 – Are We Breaking Up?

Fuji stood outside of the wall of the college, waiting for Amatsu’s last class to let out for the day. It always figured that when he truly decided to go to class it was when Fuji needed him most. He had missed so much lately. He seemed to be rushing to finish school, with no real design for the future, and he was working more than ever. Even Kyoei was not going to see many late night deejay sessions, though he had been trying to care for Shai more. Fuji knew that the no-sex thing had bothered him, but was that all that was driving him away from her.

She toyed with the engagement ring on her finger, the one she still wore everyday whether it be on the correct finger, or the opposite finger so not to throw suspicion at her mother and new step-dad. They believed she had given up the notion of marriage, but she still wanted to have the idea of marriage one day. She enjoyed the idea of being Amatsu’s wife one day, but perhaps not the vision that most girls had. She planned on being a businesswoman, and Amatsu… was a deejay. Was he going to do that all his life?

“Amatsu!” Fuji began cheerfully, watching him turn the corner to the outside of the school, but then her face fell as the gorgeous woman beside him emerged as well, walking steadily at his side. Fuji instantly felt sick and she didn’t even know why.

“Hey Fuji,” Amatsu smiled. This was not his loving smile, this was the smile of a friend who had just bumped into another friend. She now felt stricken.

“Who is this?” the blonde bombshell by his side asked him.

“Oh, Shiira, this is Fuji, Fuji, this is my friend Shiira,” Amatsu said, introducing the two women. It did not go unnoticed that Fuji went without a title. She did not even go by a ‘this is my friend’ title, not to mention ‘girlfriend’ or heaven forbid ‘fiancée’.

“Nice to meet you,” Fuji said, though it did not go unnoticed that her voice shook as she said it.

“Nice to meet you too,” Shiira said, her voice steady and happy, which made Fuji sick.

“Shiira, I will see you Thursday,” Amatsu said to her. “I have to get going, see you then?”

Shiira nodded. “See you then,” she said sweetly, and leaned forward and kissed him… on the lips! Fuji seethed and burned in her spot, just smiling falsely at the woman as she walked passed. When Shiira disappeared around the corner Fuji did not even wait for Amatsu to begin speaking. She spun around, giving him her back, and started stomping off.

“Fuji, wait,” Amatsu called, following her down the sidewalk. “Fuji, it’s not what you think.”

“You did not even introduce me as your girlfriend,” Fuji snapped behind her, continuing to walk with a speed that was making her leg a bit sore.

“How would it look if I introduced a high school junior as my girlfriend?” Amatsu asked. “What would they think of that?”

Fuji spun around, giving him little time to stop. He very nearly collided with her, but saved himself at the last second. “One, believe it or not, I’m a high school senior now, I managed to skip a grade, but you haven’t been around so how could I tell you?” Fuji snarled at him, her hands on her hips. “Two, if you care that much what your college friends think, you shouldn’t be with me then.”

“That’s not it,” Amatsu snapped. “I don’t know if you noticed, but just because your parents have decided to approve of our relationship it doesn’t make it right, and until you are of legal age, it’s wrong.”

“Say you love me,” Fuji demanded.

“What?”

“Say you love me,” she told him again.

“Why are you asking me that?”

“I want to hear you say it,” she continued. “I want to hear you tell me you don’t regret asking me to marry you. I want to hear you say that you enjoy spending time with me. I want to hear you say the reason you are suddenly at school or work all of the time is not because you are avoiding me.”

“That would be a lie,” snapped Amatsu back. “I am avoiding you.”

Fuji was taken aback, and now had fallen silent. She had pushed him into this, and now she felt worse that he was admitting it. “Why?”

“Fuji, I do love you, despite what you think,” she had to say it didn’t sound like love at that moment, “but I am a man, and you have been nothing but a tease lately. Every time we get close to each other you pull away and tell me you aren’t ready for that step. We have already taken that step. Why are you changing your mind now?”

“I don’t want to make a mistake,” Fuji said honestly.

“What kind of mistake?”

“Pregnancy,” Fuji pointed out. “When I’m with you my priorities aren’t straight. I start thinking only of love and how happy I was. But I have so much I need to do in the future, and sex clouds my mind, as do you.”

Amatsu looked down at Fuji, not an entirely friendly look. “What’s more important to you Fuji? Me or what you already have planned out for your future.”

“I want both,” Fuji said, standing strong on her decision.

“Which is more important?”

“You can’t make me choose!”

“Which is more important!?” he was practically screaming it at her. “I need to know if I’m wasting my time being with you because you will never be ready. This usually isn’t the speech or conversation a man has with a woman, it’s usually the opposite. But I need to know. Do you see your future with me or as a successful businesswoman?”

“I see both.”

“Meaning, you can’t choose,” Amatsu said. “You can’t choose if I am the most important thing in the world for you. I don’t see how that is going to work. Love is supposed to be the most important thing.”

Fuji shook her head ferociously. “But that isn’t practical,” she said through the tears that were quickly beginning to burn at her eyes. “Amatsu, I love you, but I want to have a real future. I don’t want to…”

“End up like you think I am going to end up?”

“Yes… no… Amatsu…”

Amatsu was shaking his head. “Fuji, how is this going to work if you don’t even really know if you want to be with me?” he asked. “You are in love with being in love. You are in love with the rebellion I offered you from your mother, but you have other things on your mind right now, and I don’t seem to be a priority. How long did it take you to even realize I was avoiding you?”

“Are you breaking up with me?” she asked through the tears flowing over her cheeks.

“Yes,” he said honestly. “Yes I am.”

“Is it because of Shiira?”

“No,” he said. “Fuji, I never cheated on you, I never even thought about it, and after I walk away I won’t think of another girl for a while either, because this is breaking my heart too, but you and I… we aren’t meant to be.”

“Amatsu…” she had to choke out even his name, the water in her throat choking her. “Amatsu, you don’t mean that…”

Amatsu stepped forward, brushing the auburn strands of Fuji’s hair out of her face. Her hair had grown longer, quickly starting to fight its way back to the length it had been at before her mother had shorn it in a fit of rage. “Fuji,” he whispered, leaning down and kissing her forehead. The tears flowed faster out of her eyes and she squeezed them shut, steeling herself to the feelings that were punching her stomach with a boxing glove. “I won’t forget you, and I am sure I will see you around, since our best friends are dating.”

Fuji shook her head, pulling herself away from Amatsu, the fury inside of her drying the tears. “Get away from me,” she snapped. He did as she asked, knowing now it was best. “Just… just stay away from me. We won’t see each other, I don’t even want to be near you. Ever. You are a pig, if you are breaking up with me because I won’t fuck you. You can cover it any way you want to, but I know what you are really doing.” She turned on him, holding her head high as she walked away from him. She turned back only once, to shout, “Shai had her baby!” and then she walked away, walking out of his life.

Amatsu sat down on the edge of the sidewalk, burying his head in his hands. She was wrong. He didn’t break up with her for sex, though it made an easy out. He broke up with her because he loved her more than she would ever love him, and it hurt to see the distraction always in her eyes when they spoke. The love she had felt in the first few months was gone, all that was left was a friendship that would never have worked as anything more.

Standing and walking down the sidewalk he saw the ring he had given her lying on the cement, discarded in her fit of rage. He did not even bend to pick it up. He left it where it was. If he took it with him he would want to give it back to her. Better for someone else to find happiness with it, they never would.
