Love and War
Chapter Nine: Love and War
“Good Night Kessie, sleep tight!”
“Good night! I wuv you Mommy! I wuv you Mama!”
Connor, over in his crib on the other side of the room, squealed, “MA!” and cooed.
Lucilla read Kessie her favorite story, “All the little witches” and both women tucked them into bed. Raquella handed Kessie her little wand.
Kessie knew what to say, “Blessed God and blessed Goddess... I am your child, protect me and keep me safe while I sleep... I ask for you to bless me and keep me safe...”
Raquella took the wand, “Close your eyes... it’s time to sleep... no more noise, it’s time to sleep.”
Lucilla took her own wand and drew two circles around both children. She too, said a prayer for Connor, who was too young to do a chant. “Gracious Goddess and Great God, please bless and protect our son while he sleeps. I ask this of you...”
Raquella walked between the two circles and closed the window, “It is going to be cold tonight, I don’t want my children to get sick!”
Kessie was already sound asleep by the time Raquella and Lucilla had left the room and pulled the door almost to.
“Lucilla... I am one of the happiest women on the earth right now...” Raquella said, changing into her pajamas.
“Wait in line behind me.” Lucilla said, laughing.
***
(Meanwhile)
Mark pulled the car up to the side of the house. Greg shushed him and told him to keep the car running. “Are you sure this is a good idea?” Greg said, opening his door. The two men were dressed in black clothes.
“Look idiot... I want my child.” Mark said as he snuck over to a window. He peaked in a window. “Greg! Hey!” Mark whispered. “Over here!”
Greg brought over a crow-bar and looked at his friend. Greg took one swing and smashed the window.
***
Raquella and Lucilla had just laid down in bed and had attempted to become intimate. But the sound of the smashing window drew both of their attentions.
“Raq...what was that?”
“I don’t know...”
***
Mark climbed into the window and grabbed up the sleeping Kessie and threw her to Greg, who caught her and laid her down on the ground.
“MARK! I see the bedroom light on, you’d better hurry up!”
Mark grabbed Connor and climbed through the window just as he heard footsteps coming down the hall.
***
Raquella walked down the hallway, “I am just going to check on the children...”
It was only a few moments until Lucilla heard the one thing that no mother ever wanted to hear, it was Raq’s blood curdling scream, “LUCILLA!”
Lucilla rushed down the hallway and stood in the doorway, right behind Raquella, who was looking at the empty beds....EMPTY!
***
“Damn it Greg, let’s go already!” Mark said, holding his hands, “Ouch, that hurt...”
“What hurt?” Greg said as he peeled out of the driveway.
“I’m not sure, but my hands feel like they are both burning and freezing at the same time...” Mark rubbed his hands. He had broken the circle of protection and he had gotten both burned and frozen for it.
***
Raquella walked over to the broken window, and neither of the women heard the squealing tires. Raq’s bare feet crushed the broken glass.
“The... circles...” Lucilla said, “They are broken...”
“That’s not the only thing broken... Lucilla... call the police.”
***
No more than thirty minutes later, the cops and their scent-tracking dogs were crawling all over the house.
“Now, Mrs....” one officer said, sitting in a chair in the living room.
“Please use first names,” Raquella said. “To eliminate confusion”
“Pardon me, Raquella... please, describe your evening...” The cop said.
“Well, at a quarter after four, Lucilla brought the children home, Kessie home from her Kindergarten, and Connor home from daycare, I made a nice dinner of baked fish with carrots and asparagus sprouts with fruit ice for dessert.”
The officer wrote down what she was saying. “Continue... what did you guys do after dinner, do not keep anything out, any little detail may mean the difference between finding them now or later.”
Raquella thought, “After dinner, we gave the children their cleansing ritual baths and we did a family ritual...”
“What kind of ritual?” The cop said.
“It was a Wiccan ritual.” Raquella said, thinking, “we always do one before bed with our whole family.”
Magick, the lanky black cat, was laying against Beth’s leg, purring.
The officer nodded, knowing it was against their religion to respond to any other prodding about their rituals.
“And after that Ritual?” The officer said.
“We read Kessie’s favorite story and tucked the children in...”
