I rang the doorbell and stepped back, stomping my feet to try and keep warm and knock the snow off my boots. As usual, the dog started barking. After a moment, the door opened and Melody looked out. She smiled one of her world-famous room-brightning smiles.
"Hey Curtis, glad you could make it," she said opening the door for me to come in while trying to shoo the big dog out of the way.
"Thanks," I said as I stepped in. I kicked my shoes off and she took my coat and hung it up in the closet.
"Is't snowin' again?" she asked.
"Mm-hmm, that is what it does in Canada in the winter," I said.
"It certainly does," Mark said as he stepped out of the living room where he'd been talking to his boss and checking his e-mail from work. He extended his hand.
"Mark, good to see you. Mel says you're going to China?" I said as I shook it.
"Yup, I leave tomorrow and I'm gone for two and a half weeks," he said as Mel rolled her beautiful brown eyes, and sighed.
"Leaving me alone with three kids."
"Well, Mark's parent's live 10 minutes away, and I live about 15." Melody's parent's were an hour and a half away.
"That's true. And I can always call on my neighbours and friends," Melody said, "Anyway, dinner'll be about five minutes." As if on cue, their six year - old son, Joshua walked into the kitchen.
"When's dinner mommy?" he asked.
"Soon. Wash up and we're gonna' eat."
I smiled and leaned back.
"Wow, that's really good Mel," I said. She smiled widely.
"Thanks. I enjoy making that," she explained. Mark started to collect the dishes. The kids ran off the play as the three adults, Mark, Melody and I, sat around the table and talked, with promise they would be called when pie was served.
"Glass of wine?" I asked.
"Yeah, that'd be good thank you," Mark said. Melody also said she would like some as well.
"Are you driving him tomorrow to the airport?" I asked Mel.
"No, unfortunately. He leaves at 4:30. I can't get the kids up that early."
"Well, why don't I crash here tonight. That way, you can see him off and I'm here if the kids need me," I said as I popped the cork, after a brief struggle.
"Oh, would you?" Mel asked.
"Well, I know that's what I would want you to do, if our roles were reversed," I said as I poured the wine. "Besides I could use the night out." When we were done with our wine, we put it out of sight and called the kids for pie.
"Well, the pullout couch downstairs is kind of hard," Mark said as Melody served the apple pie then added a generous helping of ice cream.
"Don't worry about it, I'll be fine." Truth be told with my plan so close to fruition, I knew I wouldn't be sleeping that much that night, if at all. This plan had been in the works for some time. When I learned Mark was going to China, I had to move my plan forward. Now it was so close, I could almost taste it.
