Prologue
Inside the house, chairs and tables were disorderly. Nothing was in it's respective place. It was dark and the curtains were closed. The shadows encompassed everything, including a girl, Riley, Cowering in the corner of the kitchen. Her hand trembled as she held a big knife loosely in her pale fingers. Outside things were much the same. It was quiet, children's toys seemingly abandoned on the pavement. Doors were locked, curtains were closed.
The door bell rang. Riley clutched the knife tighter.
"Open the door! Open the door!"
Riley scampered to the door on her knees and unlocked it. Her best friend Magnolia ran in and immediately dropped to her knees. Riley closed and locked the door with haste. They both whispered.
"What the hell Magnolia!? You know you could be getting us both killed."
"I'm not safe without you. Your the smart one."
"That's ridiculous!"
"Best friends forever stick together."
"Not if we die first."
"We won't die if we stick together."
Magnolia pulled out a semi automatic pistol.
"Where did you get that?!"
"My dad kept this one in the lock box under the bed."
The two girls grew silent. They could hear the wind blowing against the leaves outside. The air grew stiff.
"I wonder if were going to die..."
"Don't even think that."
"It's hard not to."
"I know..."
"Well when they come....the vampires i mean, we'll do everything we can to stay alive. You've got my back and I've got yours. Friends forever."
"Right."
Riley smiled and grabbed Magnolia's hand.
"Right." Magnolia reassured.
Riley's mind wandered as she and Magnolia sat in silence. She could still hear the screams of her mother and father in the kitchen that morning. She covered her ears. She remembered the smell of blood in the air as she stood on the stairs watching a man repeatedly stab her father while her mother laid lifeless in a pool of red. She was frozen. She had seen everything that happened and did nothing to help. She knew that she would never forgive herself for that.
"They just came through and killed everyone. Without a care they killed everyone, no one spared. We were unarmed and unprotected. How could they..."
"Dont think about it..."
Magnolia grabbed Riley's hand tighter.
"You'll drive yourself crazy thinking about it." she said.
They were both still traumatized by the sudden war. Humans against vampires, vampires against humans. In the battle between the two, humans had stood no chance. The attack was sudden and devastating for everyone in the small town. People struggled to remain alive, kids were homeless, fathers were left without their wives and wives were left without husbands. Magnolia and Riley both had suffered great losses. They were both silently grieving, none more than the other.
Riley took a deep breath to clear her mind. Outside there was a sudden loud shatter like glass breaking. Distant screams erupted in the distance and commotion ensued. Magnolia grabbed her gun and accidentally let off a round, but secured it immediately after. She and Riley ran for the open closet.
"Lock it! Lock it!" Magnolia screamed.
"Its a closet it doesn't lock!" She responded. They both grabbed the door knob, pulling it toward themselves with haste.
"They're back." Magnolia said, grabbing Riley's hand. Riley put her ear to the cold wooden door. She could still hear everything that was happening outside though dimmed. There was a sound of a lock breaking and then a tremendous clatter. Magnolia held the gun with shaking hands toward the door.
"Shoot it! Shoot it!"
Riley grabbed Magnolia's clutched fingers and tried to shoot the gun herself as the closet door flew open. A shadowed figure leapt at Magnolia as she fired in every direction. Riley was knocked to the floor and hit with a stray bullet.
"Riley!" Magnolia screamed. Her voice became low, then soundless. Riley grasped for her through the dark, but she was gone. Someone or something had taken her.
Riley crawled out into the living room holding her side. She bled out onto the barely visible carpet, but the pain was bearable.
"Magnolia!" She yelled. They were coming through and snatching people up one by one like in a horror film.
"Magnolia!"
Her voice echoed off of the walls. She was gone.
"Stick together remember!" She yelled, crawling to the open door due to it having been partially snatched off its hinges. She looked down and saw that a deep purple stain had been gathering in a circle on her blue shirt. When the pain began to flair up, she knew that she must have been in shock up until then.
"Ugh..." She groaned. She doubled over, but her eyes never left the scene of destruction and chaos. Bright red flames seeped out of living room windows and deep black smoke billowed behind it.
The peaceful, beautiful neighborhood she once knew was now wasting away in flames. The debris floating through the air clouded around and fell in shallow piles on the ground covering everything in a dull gray dust. "This all has to be a nightmare..." She said. "But your very awake." Riley turned when she heard the foreign voice. She wasn't aware that she had been staring down at a pair of well dressed feet and slowly looked up until she saw a face. very menacing face that held no emotion, no expression. She could only stare in fright and disbelief. "I didn't think anyone would be left alive." The man said pulling Riley up by the collar of her shirt. Riley grunted as her side ached from the strain. "I see your hurt." Riley knew exactly what the man was. She knew that by the look in his eyes and in his dress, that he was a vampire, the creature she despised. She gathered every bit of hate and spite she held in her body and spit in his face. The mixture of blood and saliva slid down his cheek. He chuckled. "Do you know that I can kill you girl?" He wiped his cheek. "Do you know that I can kill right here right now?" "I don't care. Why should I live when...when everyone else is dead.... Dead because of you, your kind!" "Your mistaken. I didn't kill anyone. Is simply wasn't my job." the man said, pushing a strand of bright red hair out of Riley's eye. She had broken out in a cold sweat and her hair was plastered to her face like clay. A pool of blood had gathered around her feet. "You intrigue me." "I'll call the police. They'll arrest you and...and put you in jail..." Riley was beginning to pass out from blood loss. She had no idea she was speaking in rubbish. "Would you prefer death or life? Would you prefer to die right here right now?" Riley was much too dizzy to speak. She could barely keep her eyes open as the blood that had grown cold on her shirt caused her to shiver. She breathed erratially. "I think I want you to live. A beautiful creature like yourself doesnt deserve to die here...not by a hand that isnt my own." Draping Riley over his arm, he carried her back into the home she had crawled from. There was a back room with a bed near the kitchen and with a path of blood behind him, he laid her down and shut the door. "The ones that killed your parents were pawns. They were humans hired by us to go through and kill everyone and everything in their path." He draped his coat over the foot of the bed. "Our job as vampires was to go through and finish the job, clean things up. Those found alive were to be captured." He undid the buttons of his shirt and laid it down neatly next to his coat. "We were told that anything we found could be ours for the taking. I was lucky to have found you first." He knelt down at the foot of the bed and dragged Riley forward so that her neck was lying straight and hung slightly over the bed at an angle. He didn't want to be tempted by other positions. "Your mine for the taking..." He bit down hard at the place just below Riley's ear. In her dizzied state, her movements were clumsy and uncoordinated as she struggled to pull away. She could feel his cold fangs sucking harshly at her bruishing flesh and the pain elevated with each suck, each painful suck. The man grabbed hold of Riley's hair and pulled as he dug his head further into her neck. He bit down deeper and harder until the urge to kill the girl was much to apparent. He pulled away. Riley blacked out.
