Arrival
This story is a work of fiction, any resemblance of characters to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.
Sixteen year old Addison Moore stood outside of the busy airport and waited for her lift. She was boiling in the hot and humid weather and she couldn’t wait to get to bed. Her long brown hair flew around in the soft breeze and she squinted her blue eyes at the bright lights of the airport.
It was nearing midnight and she hadn’t been able to sleep on the plane. She looked around at the other people milling around her. Getting into taxi’s or catching their lifts. She looked at the road and wondered where her aunt could be? She had told her cousin the correct time that she would be arriving at and Lacey had confirmed that someone would be there on time to pick her up.
Addison looked at her watch again and saw that she had been waiting for nearly twenty minutes. She looked at the queue of taxi’s waiting and decided that she would get one. She knew the address of where she was going and if someone turned up for her she would just explain that she couldn’t wait any longer.
She got into the taxi and told the middle aged driver where she was going and sat back to relax.
It had been a long day. In fact it had been a long week. Never mind stressful. All Addison wanted to do was curl up in a bed and sleep, forever.
She looked out of the window and saw that it was starting to rain. Great! She thought, the weather had followed her from England to match her mood. Unconsciously her hand reached up for the silver locket she wore around her neck. One single tear fell from her eyes and she shook her head. No, no more tears. She had cried enough over the last two weeks.
It had been hard to stop crying in the beginning but she’d had to. She’d had to be strong. There wasn’t anybody she could rely on so she’d had to rely on herself.
Nearly two weeks ago Addison’s parents had been killed. Even thinking about it now made her catch her breath. Her world had ended when she had been given the news. Everything had then gone blank till the funeral.
Her grandfather, her father’s father, had made all the arrangements and Addison had been thankful at the time that he hadn’t wanted her input. She had sat through the service as if in a trance and it hadn’t been till her Grandfather had given her even more bad news that she had woke up. He was sending her to America. To the small town her mother had grew up in to live with her aunt and uncle. He had told Addison that he was too old to look after a teenage girl. Addison knew though that the real reason was that he just hadn’t wanted her there. No love was lost between Addison and her Grandfather. He had never wanted her dad to marry her mum and had never hid the fact.
Addison had shouted and complained. She had suggested everything from leaving school and finding a job to moving in with her friend but no, her Grandfather had decided and there was no way to change his mind. Addison thought that the old man enjoyed ruining her life more then it already was.
Not only did she have to deal with the lost of her beloved parents but she had also had to say goodbye to her friends, move to a new, foreign school and a new home, living with people she hardly knew. Well, her aunt and uncle were ok, she supposed. They’d visited England quite a bit over the years but they wern’t her parents.
Her aunt hadn’t been able to make it to the funeral because she had broken her ankle in a fall a few weeks back. Addison had missed her. She had needed her. They had spoken nearly every night since Addison’s parents death.
Addison didn’t know how she felt about living with her cousin Lacey either. Over the years she had got the impression that Lacey didn’t like her. She never said anything, it was just a feeling Addison got when in her company. Lacey, Addison knew, liked a lot of attention and could be quite spoilt. She had often heard her mother say to her father, that her aunt let Lacey get away with too much. Addison worried how living with Lacey, who was the same age as her, would be.
Addison saw that they where nearing her aunt and uncle’s neighbourhood. She recognised the area from her one and only visit when she had been eight. She sat up straight and looked out for the familiar house.
The taxi pulled up outside and after paying the driver she carried her bags to the front porch. She managed it even though they were heavy and she rang the door bell.
And rang it again.
The door slowly opened for Addison to see her uncle Ben stood there.
‘Addison? Is that you?’ He turned on the hall light and opened the door wide. Addison saw that he was in his pj’s and had obviously got out of bed.
Her aunt Rachel was stood on the stairs in her nightdress. A cast on the bottom part of her leg and a crutch in her grasp.
‘Addie?’ Addison smiled, her aunt was the only one who she ever let get away with calling here Addie.
‘What are you doing here?’ Ben asked.
‘I rang. I told Lacey I would be arriving today,’ Addison told her aunt and uncle. ’Didn’t she tell you?’ Addison gave a small sigh and closed her eyes for a minute before opening them again. She was just so tired!
‘She told us you were coming on Monday,’ Rachel said.
‘That’s three days from now!’ Addison said. She had defiantly told her cousin Friday. Why had Lacey told her parents the wrong date?
‘She must of misheard you,’ Ben said. ‘Never mind, you’re here now.’
Addison just looked at Ben tiredly. Her aunt saw the look and smiled in sympathy.
‘Addie, dear, how are you?’ Addison heard the loving tone in her aunts’s voice and turning to look at her she saw the sadness in Rachel’s own eyes.
Rachel hobbled towards Addison, with the help of the crutch and just before she put her arms around her Addison broke down. She collapsed on the floor in tears and her aunt followed her. Addison held onto her aunt’s strong arms and let the tears fall. She could’t help it. Up till now she had felt like she had no one to lead on, now she had Rachel.
Rachel, who was also heartbroken at the loss of a loving sister, felt her heart crack more at the sound of pain in her niece’s sobbing.
Both of them sat there on the floor crying their hearts out, Ben faded into the shadows, letting them comfort each other. Nobody noticed the pretty blonde haired, Lacey watching from the landing.
