The Wings of a Butterfly

I spend a lot of time on making all the details as accurate as possible :) I like to do that. It's half the fun!
>> WhinnieRichards pointed me at the name of Julian. I changed it, to be more accurate. Thank you!

Money could buy a lot of things. With enough money, one could buy an 18th century mansion at the rim of London, restore enough rooms to use it for researches, and put a whole laboratory in it.

With enough money, one could travel through time. Or, at least make a good effort for it.

Julian Lewis had enough money. It was old money, inherited, and money attracted more money. All he had to do was invest and watch it grow. But doing nothing was no fun… So the latest investment had been in the project of these two young, ambitious scientists, Simon and Greg, who claimed they could travel through time. Julian had invested in worse things than that. At least it would be entertaining for a while.

The two scientists had tried to explain him how it worked. Julian had listened patiently, feigning interest, hearing only keywords and forgetting all the rest. He was no scientist; he was a simple rich dude, with simple needs like a bit of distraction.

He bought everything the two young men needed for their project on one single condition; he would be around when they started. Which would be, in fact, today.

Julian took a seat in one of the comfortable sofas and looked up at the two excited scientists. “Time for a briefing?” he asked sweetly, crossing his legs. “So what’s going to happen today? We’ll all be going into a machine, you push some buttons, and we’ll be standing in the middle of a town in the past or future?”

“Well… ehm, no.” Simon shook his head. “It’s not that simple, sir.”

It never was. Julian sighed softly, and leaned back in a more bored posture. “Alright, so tell me the good news. There is good news, isn’t there?”

“Oh yes, sir!” Greg hasted to say. “Very good news indeed. We’ve managed to get views from the past of this very home, and the details are even quite stunning!”

Views, with stunning details. Now that didn’t sound very promising at all. Julian had hoped on a bit more than that, but he smiled encouragingly, inviting them to show him what they meant.

Simon and Greg lead the way into the laboratory. This place always intimidated Julian, with all the beeps, flashes, and flickering screens. He was brought to a large screen at the back, and was gently persuaded to sit down. He did. So now the show would start, and all would be worth it, he reckoned.

Greg had come prepared. He gave the rich investor a cigar and a large scotch, while Simon started up the machine that would make it all happen. As they stood back, the screen flashed briefly, and then flickered a bit. Julian watched it intently, waiting for the ‘stunning details’.

“There, what do you say, sir?”

Julian blinked and looked up at Simon. “What do you mean, what do you say? This was it?”

“Sir, it’s an amazing result!” Simon gaped at their young financier, eyes wide in disbelieve.

“Quite amazing,” nodded Julian. “I’ve spent half a million on your project and all I saw was a few flashes. That’s amazing indeed.”

“But didn’t you see it?” Simon was clearly disbelieving his ears. “Hang on,” he muttered, walking over to a computer. “We’ve taped it. We’ll run through it again, in slow motion.”

Julian sighed once more, sinking deeper into the seat, and sipped the sharp drink. On the screen in front of him, an image flashed up, and Simon froze the frame.

“There! Now can you see it?” he asked a bit unkindly, pointing with a trembling finger. “Furniture! Paintings! And there, a human figure! This is a major breakthrough!”

Squeezing his eyes, Julian managed to see the details Simon was pointing out. Right… now he could see it. It was all fuzzy and unclear though, and it was almost impossible to recognize. But it was, undoubtedly, a view into another time era.

Julian put down his drink and applauded softly. “Well done,” he said sincerely. “How much more money do you need to make it more clearly?”

“Uhm… Well, we… Erh…”

“At least another hundred,” helped Greg. “I’m sorry sir, but we need a lot more equipment.”

“A hundred,” repeated Julian. “…Thousand, of course.” As Greg nodded, so did he. “Alright, it will be done. Next time, I want a movie on that screen, with recognizable details and moving people. Clear? Clear. Let me out.”
