Mulberry Killers
[Adalyn's P.O.V]
“Honey look, people are moving into the house next door.” My mother said while looking out the kitchen window. I was not really paying attention, because all I could think about was whose house the new people were moving in. It was his house. when I was little he and I were inseparable, we use to go everywhere that included even the bathroom.
Our parents had absolutely no clue as to what to do with us, because we would never be separated for more than a minute. That also meant we were always sick, because we would share everything, and we always played games about getting married, and having kids of our own when we were older. Stupid kids stuff. God how I wish that I could go back to those days, but life has dealt the cards of sorrow and pain. There is nothing to change that.
[END P.O.V]
As Adalyn was getting ready to leave, the telephone rang, when her mother answered it, and her face paled as if she had seen a ghost. “Mum what’s wrong?” Adalyn asked taking the phone away from her. “Hello” she said, “uh Adalyn, hi it’s Teena.” She answered. “What’s going on Teena?” Adalyn asked her “Well you see Greg and Anna were driving back from, his mothers when they were hit by a drunk driver. Adalyn they never made it. Their funeral is this Saturday.” Teena finished. , choked up with tears. "Oh my god that’s terrible!" Adalyn said back, also choking up with tears. "But what about the baby, where was he when this took place?" Adalyn asked when she got a hold of herself again. "That’s why they were at his moms, dropping the baby off while they went out to have some alone time" she replied.
"Awe, that poor child, going to grow up without parents" Said Adalyn. "Yeah I know, I feel so bad, but I have to go, so I will see you on Saturday?" finished Teena. "Yes, I will see you then," replied Adalyn, as she wiped tears away from her eyes. They then both hung up. Adalyn went back into the bathroom to fix up her makeup since it was now all over her face from her crying, and went out. As Adalyn left her mother’s house, she took another glance at the house where the new neighbours were moving in. She felt like crying again but she had to hold it in, since she was already late for her appointment.
Saturday morning came fast. It felt like just yesterday when Adalyn had gotten that sad phone call about her friends’ deaths. Adalyn got up, went into the bathroom, and turned on the shower. She took her clothes off; she stared at herself in the mirror for a few minutes. Adalyn was a very beautiful woman she had soft features and everything equally portioned. She had flawless caramel coloured skin, sexy luscious lips and these almond shaped bright eyes. The only problem Adalyn had was that her confidence level was low, because of that she had always thought she was ugly. There was a time she had thought of herself as pretty, when he thought of her as pretty. After staring at herself she final had jumped into the shower. “I cannot believe Greg and Anna are gone,” she thought to herself, as she was putting shampoo into her hair. "Adalyn!” she heard her mother’s voice call.
"I’ll be out in a minute!" Adalyn replied, not realizing she was standing there for almost twenty minutes. She got out, and got dressed quickly. She put on her makeup and left the bathroom. "Yes mom?" She asked, as she was brushing her hair. "Jen is going to be here in five minutes to pick you up" She said, as she walked into the kitchen. Adalyn ran upstairs to get the rest of her stuff. When she got back downstairs, she heard the honk of a horn outside. "Bye mom, see you later" she called, as she shut the front door behind her. She then walked towards the car, and then got in and shut the door behind her. She hugged Jen and said "Long time man!” "Yeah I know, too long" Jen replied, as Adalyn was putting on her seat-belt while Jen drove away. “Damn it” Adalyn and Jen cursed as they were running up to the funeral parlour. The two women had just made it in time for the service.
“This is an awful day to have a funeral.” Said Teena quietly to Jared as they were walking to the grave-site, “It really sucks” he replied. When they got there Teena saw Amberley and Cameron, she quickly walked up to her and broke down. “I can’t believe they are gone.” She said between her tears, Amberley was the same as well. After they lowered, Greg and Anna’s caskets into the ground people started to leave to go to the reception. There was one last person who was just standing by the grave silently looking at the grave. “This is going to be very weird you know that. You are not going to call me and tell me what’s happening with your life and the baby.” Adalyn said throwing a blue rose down onto the casket, because she knew it was Anna’s favourite flower.
She stood there a little while longer, but then it had started to rain. As if it was nothing she continued to stand there, but as abruptly as the rain had started it had stopped well at least over her anyway. As she looked behind her she met a pair of beautiful greenish brown eyes, “you will catch a cold you know.” said the person staring at her. “Yes.” Adalyn said turning back to the grave; they stood there in an uncomfortable silence for a few moments. “So it’s been what five years since we talked? How have you been?” asked the man looking at her. “Like you give a damn Dean,” she said staring at the grave one last time before walking out from under the umbrella, and back into the rain.
As the reception started the melancholy mood of the morning events soon turned to, a light-hearted atmosphere. People were talking and laughing about the fun times they have had with Greg and Anna. Adalyn was glad that she got out of the rain and away from Dean; she knew she never wanted old wounds to reopen not at a time like this. Jen, Teena, and Amberley where catching up on what they had been doing for the five years they were apart. “So Teena what’s this big news, which you keep talking about?” asked an excited Jen, “well ladies as you all know, Jared and I have been together for seven years. So about two days ago he asked me to marry him, and just yesterday I found out that I am pregnant” she gushed. “Congratulations.” Laughed a woman, Teena turned her head and sure enough, she saw her childhood best friend.
“Thanks Addy.” She smiled hugging Adalyn, “anyways how you been, where are you living now?” Teena continued. “Still living with my mum, you know trying to help her out with the shop. It is hard on her since she is getting older now and cannot really keep up with the list of chores to do at the shop. So basically I run the shop.” Adalyn said softly staring at her hands; she had picked up that habit when she was in middle school. Whenever she felt embarrassed, shy, or depressed she would always stare at her hands. She had never liked doing it but she felt safe, when she did do the action. “That’s just great, I will be sure to drop by the shop to see how things have changed,” smiled Amberley.
The reception had been going on for about two hours when Dean and Sam walked in. Dean walked over to the refreshments table while Sam walked over to the table Adalyn and friends were sitting at. “Hey guys, long time no see!” she said, sitting down at the table. “Yeah it has” Said Adalyn. Dean then walked over, and sat down beside Sam and handed her a cup of punch. “Oh, have you met my fiancé Dean?” Sam had asked while looking, at them all with excitement especially at Adalyn. Adalyn then looked from Sam to Dean with shock in her face. She then got up and said, “I don’t feel good.”
Then ran towards the bathrooms, Teena got up and followed her. When Teena got inside the bathroom, she could hear Adalyn crying silently. “Adalyn are you okay?” She asked. In between sobs, Adalyn said, “I will be”. “I know why your upset Adalyn” Teena continued, “It’s because you liked that guy your whole life and someone you had considered to be your friend is going to marry him” She finished. Adalyn opened the door and just looked at Teena, as if wanting to tell her something. “Addy is there more to the story then you’re telling me?” she asked.
Just as Adalyn was about to continue on Sam walked into the bathroom, “Oh! Hey you feeling a bit better Adalyn?” Sam asked while touching up her make-up. As if not caring as to what the answer was she continued on, “ladies my lord you would not believe I cannot keep Dean off of me, between us girls Dean and I had a quickie before coming into the reception.”
Both women just looked at Sam as if she was something nasty on the bottom of their shoe. “Do you guys remember that restaurant The Secret Garden?” she asked staring at them through the mirror, “Yeah I do, I mean who doesn’t every teenage guy would want to bring their date their” replied Teena, “well Dean proposed to me there” Sam said smiling. Adalyn felt her heart break all over again, and those events that happened so long ago flashed before her eyes. Snapping from her mini daydream, she walked out of the bathroom and walked back to the table. Without acknowledging the rest of the individuals seated around, she walked up to Dean and in a clam voice, she asked him to go outside with her. When the pair left everyone at the table, was a little shocked and quickly got up, and ran to a window to try to hear what they were saying.
Without hesitation Adalyn blurted out, “of all places to propose in why that one?” Dean just looked at her for a few seconds, and then realized what she was referring. “According to me this is a free country, which means I am aloud to propose anywhere I like.” He calmly stated, “Yeah well I don’t give a flying fuck about how the country is free, why there?” she said as her voice started to crack. Dean looked at her and said flatly, “the restaurant meant nothing to me until I asked Sam to marry me.” He knew he had struck a nerve, when he saw that her eye was twitching and she was staring at her hands.
Adalyn stood there trying not to cry she did not want him to see her cry, “it meant something to me.” She said straining her voice, Adalyn thought she had gotten over him, but this proved that she was not fully over him. Taking a deep breath, she looked up at him and in a soft tone she said, “Well congratulations to the both of you. Next time have a little more decency and have sex on your own time.” As Adalyn was walking past him, Jen came bursting out like a bat out of hell. “Hot date tonight, so I got to go Addy you coming with me again?” Jen asked looking at her, with a nod of her head the two women began walking to Jen’s car. As the women, left Dean watched them never taking his eyes off the back of Adalyn back. The car ride back to Adalyn’s house had made Jen feel uncomfortable; she could not take anymore of the silence so she turned on the radio.
“Sorry folks for interrupting but we have just gotten, word of two I repeat two extremely dangerous men escaping from Lansing Penitentiary in Regent County. Be advised that they maybe in fact armed, so please take great caution. Remember to lock your doors and windows. The highway patrol and all local police stations have set a curfew for all residences in Arbourville’s counties. This means if you live in Regent, Greenly, Grimily, and or Mulberry the curfew is at 9 o’clock pm. All residents found out of their homes after the curfew will have to pay a fine of $650 dollars. Stay tuned for more on this story.” Finished the radio Disc jocky, Adalyn looked over at Jen “so I’m guessing that you are going to have your date at your place or, his.” Adalyn replied,” pssh fuck the curfew seriously, I mean come on this happened three counties over.
What are the chances of these two crazed men coming to our small, BORING town? ” Jen said checking her makeup in the rear view mirror, “ok well the town is not that small, besides do you want to pay $650 dollars if McCartney finds you?” Adalyn asked raising an eyebrow, “Addy, Addy I’m surprised you didn’t hear we have a new police chief. Don’t you ever listen to the news; hence I am not worried about McCartney catching me.” Jen said smiling while she was pulling up to Adalyn’s house, “ok just be careful, seriously this is no joke.” Adalyn said as she closed her door.
