Part One
The smell of smoke was in the air from the barbeque that was being used by a family called the Writes. I was sitting on a fold out camp chair beside my sister Carlie watching the high school pep band concert. My other sister Cassie was taking the pictures with my Kodak digital camera. My cousin Hailey was in the band and was currently stretching in time with the others. The song 'Ever Fallen In Love' was playing on the CD playing sitting on the park bench. I was tapping my foot to the beat on the grass. I was wearing light and dark purple striped flip-flops and my toes were painted a chipped black. I had dark stonewash shorts on and a turquoise tank top with a short-sleeved white jacked over it that had gold writing all over it. The zipper was a gold dagger that had the word 'Truth' on it. I had a purple anklet on and a blue plastic bracelet. I had short brown hair that was spiked up and held back by two black headbands. Carlie looked over at me and smiled.
"They're good." she shouted over the music. I nodded enthusiastically and put two thumbs up. Though I was brunet, my sister was blonde. She had on a coral short-sleeved shirt and kaki Capri pants with flower flip-flops. Her hair was in a thick braid. She was wearing a two-piece blue necklace with a flower pendant and a dolphin mood ring.
"What time is it?" she asked, shouting again even though we were sitting right next to each other. I pulled my cell phone out of my purple tote bag and looked at the screen.
"4:30" I said, holding it up so she could see. She nodded slightly and I pulled my cell away, crossing my legs. It was a cool day for saying it was the first part of August. August 15 to be exact. I looked back at the blacktop that the band was playing on. My vision focused on a girl with shockingly blonde hair. I had never considered myself gay before but she was hot. Her hair was choppy cut and went down to her shoulders. She was wearing a grey T-shirt and red shorts. At this point, they were running in place and I watched her for a full 3 minutes before Cassie pulled me out of my thoughts. She was wearing a pink shirt with butterflies on it and Capri denim shorts, and white flip-flops with grey flowers on them.
"Caity, how do you zoom on this camera?" I looked up at her and leaned forward to show her.
"Ok, this button with the 'T' means 'Tighten' that zooms it. The one with 'W' is 'Widen' that's the one that pulls it back from zoom." I explained very poorly but apparently she understood because she went back to her seat to sit down. I set my bag on the ground and put my elbows on my knees before leaning on my hands. I was still watching the blonde girl as the group did a pulse drill. I had no clue what they were talking about but I really didn't care. I took off my sunglasses and cleaned them on my shirt before pushing my hair out of my eyes.
"Carlie I wanna pway." My older cousin Chey's little girl, Brenna said, bouncing on her grandma's lap. She was a tiny thing with a Dora the explorer shirt and little purple pants.
"Not now Bren." Carlie said, not looking away from the blacktop.
"Pwese?" Brenna asked, sticking out her bottom lip and pouting cutely.
"No, Bren." Carlie said.
"You an ornery person." Brenna said. I couldn't help the laugh that came out. Luckily, she didn't hear me.
"Give a round of applause to the high school pep band." The instructor said. Everyone clapped as the teens walked back to their families.
"Alright do you kids want to get in line for food?" Anita, my sister's grandmother, asked. I looked at the long line of people that had formed in the 3 minutes since the concert ended and shook my head. I hated people.
"I don't either." Carlie said. "Wanna got over to the park?" she turned to me.
"Yeah, we can take the camera." I smiled, standing up and slinging my bag over my shoulder and taking the camera from Cassie who was going to get food.
"Awesome." Carlie stood and stretched, then pulled her shirt down before walking towards the park. It was only about 20 feet from the black top, which was awesome for us.
"That was a great concert." she said, walking up the ramp that leads to the playground.
"Yeah it was." I said. I knew it must look weird for two 16 year olds to be walking around a little kid's playground, but neither of cared. Oh and before you ask, no we're not twins. Carlie has a different mom then me. My mom Laura and our dad Bill were married for 10 years, but they divorced six months after I was born 'cause dad had an affair with her second cousin Autumn and got her pregnant. Long story short, Carlie is 10 months older then me and her birthday is next month. My birthday was a month ago and I was so happy to be 16 finally. Our sister Cassie is 13 and Hailey is 17. I live with my mom in my grandparent's old house. And she they live with my dad in his new house.
"Ok, let's take a picture of us on the slide." I said, looking around the playground.
"Yeah, that'll be cool." Carlie smiled. We set the bag down, grabbed the camera and posed together on the red tunnel slide. It took a few tries but we finally got a few good pictures. She took a picture of me climbing the 10-foot plastic rock wall, and I took a picture of her hanging off the monkey-bars. 100 pictures later we were standing in front of the rules sign debating on how we wanted that picture to look. After a few minutes, she climbed the 4-foot fence and pointed to the words 'Have Fun!'. I laughed while taking the picture then nodded to her. She jumped off and put her shoes on. After taking a picture in front of the oak tree, we started heading back to the barbeque even though the line was still big. Our group was up at the buffet table so we walked towards them.
"Do you think people will get mad that we cut?" Carlie asked.
"Don't know, don't care." I shrugged, slipping back into my quiet routine 'cause I'm really shy around people I don't know. We both grabbed plates and napkins once we were at the table, cutting in front of Anita and her husband, who's like my 8th cousin or something, Brian.
"Hope you don't mind if we cut." Carlie laughed. I laughed softly and grabbed a fork and a hamburger bun. I put ketchup and mustard on it along with cheese. I put a hamburger patty on the bun and put the top part on, the grabbed two double chocolate chip cookies and a square of Hailey's cherry cheesecake. Brenna was in front of me when we got to the drinks and Carlie was helping her get a cup of lemonade. Carlie stopped pouring after the cup was half-full, but Brenna wanted more. She tried everything but pushing the button on top of the spigot to get more lemonade out, then moved over to the cooler beside it.
"That's water." It was a girl's voice that was deeper then mine by just a little bit. I looked up and ran right into the blonde I had seen earlier. My cup of water sloshed up and hit her in the stomach.
"Oh, crap, sorry." I said, fighting off the blush that wanted desperately to get out.
"Hey, s'ok." she smiled, looking down at her wet shirt. "I'm going to be swimming in a half an hour anyway."
"Yeah, um, I heard they were reserving the pool for band members today." I said.
"Where'd you hear that?" she asked.
"Um, Hailey told me."
"Oh, yeah I know her. Kinda short, brown hair? Wearing the grey love shirt right?" I nodded. "Oh, and that cool necklace, the one with brown and purple beads. I asked her were she got it, all she said was her cousin made it."
"Uh, yeah, that'd be me. I'm Caity MaClay." I said.
"Super cool, I'm Ashley Hill." At this point Brenna was tugging on my jacket. "And who are you, kiddo?"
"Oh, that's Brenna. She's Hailey's niece. Me and my sister Carlie are watching her."
"That's sweet." Ashley said.
"I wanna pway." Brenna pouted, tugging at my shirt now.
"I know sweets, but I gotta eat first." I said.
"Well, I gotta go, mom'll freak if I don't eat with the family today."
"Kay, bye." I said, watching her leave. I took Brenna back over and sat down in my chair. She sat on the grass and started ripping it up.
"Hey, what took you so long?" Carlie asked, taking a bite of her hamburger.
"Oh, I ran into one of the girls in the band. Like, literally. Spilled water all over her shirt." I explained.
"Ahh, that's who you were talking to." she nodded. I took a bite of cheeseburger and chewed slowly, not really hungry, but, oh well. I was thinking about Ashley, and that I should watch Van Helsing when I got home, when Hailey and her friends came up.
"Great cheese cake." I said.
"Thanks, I was afraid it would be bad 'cause of the heat." she smiled, showing her braces. This was the third time she had worn braces since she was 10.
"Nah, it's great." I said, taking another bite.
"I wan' some." Brenna said. I got a small bite on my fork and handed it to her. She ate it and giggled. "Good, Hay-Hay."
"Even the 3 year old agrees." Carlie laughed. Cassie kneeled next to Carlie's chair.
"What about what, the cheese cake?" she asked, eating her salad. She was trying to lose weight though she was already as skinny as a pole.
"Yeah, Cass, the cake." I said. "Still trying to get down to size dead, I see."
"Ha ha, very funny, Caity." She rolled her dark brown eyes.
"I know, I'm just the queen of comedy." I deadpanned. Everyone laughed at that except Cassie of course.
"So does anyone know what collage you're going to?" Hailey's friend Machala, the one with a long braid, asked.
"I never really thought about it." Carlie said.
"I'm going to take writing classes at the local collage." I said, eating a cookie.
"I'm thinking of going to Oxford." Lucy, a girl with short blonde hair, said. This conversation went on for ten minutes but I turned most of it out. It was 5:58 now and I was getting tired.
"All band members can head over to the pool now, it's time to swim." The instructor said, yelling so everyone could hear him properly.
"I hate you." I said to Hailey as she grabbed her bag and stood up. She just laughed.
"Yeah, yeah, I love you too."
"So we'll see you at 9." Anita said, standing up and packing up the up the chairs. We were just putting the chairs in the trunk of Anita's white car, when someone tapped my shoulder.
"Huh?" I asked, turning around, and coming face to face with Ashley.
"Oh, hi." Again, I had to stop myself from blushing.
"Expecting someone else?" she asked.
"Not really." I shrugged.
"Well, I just wanted to ask if you could make me one of those awesome necklaces?" she asked.
"Oh, yeah sure, I can do that." I smiled.
"Ok. Um here's my phone number, just call me when it's done. I can pay you and everything."
"Yeah, alright. You don't have to pay me though."
"I want to. Otherwise it would feel like, stealing or something." I nodded.
"Caity, where are you?" Cassie asked.
"Coming." I called.
"I'll see you later then." Ashley smiled.
"Yeah, see you." I got in the car and shut the door.
"What were you doing?" Carlie asked.
"Um, nothing, just.. the girl I talked to earlier asked me to make her a necklace like Hailey's." I said, looking at her.
"Oh, cool." Cassie said.
"Yeah I know." I sighed and closed my eyes, tilting my head back. 'Oh, god, I have a crush on someone I just met. And a girl no less.' I thought. 'I can't tell mom.'

We got back to my dad's house so I could get my bike. I live two miles away from my dad's house so I could ride my bike there whenever I wanted. I hugged Autumn good-bye and my dad, then grabbed my red hoodie, stuffed it in my bag, and got on my bike. Carlie and Cassie hugged me good-bye and I took off the kickstand. I put my feet on the petals and rode down to my house.
"Hi, mom." I smiled, walking in the door.
"Hi, sweetie." she said, giving me a hug. "How was your day?" My mom had short brown hair and was wearing a light blue tank top and jean shorts. She was wearing slippers, which meant she had just got done cleaning. She was heavier set, but not over weight.
"Good, we watched a movie, and then went to Hailey's concert, and a girl in her band wanted me to make a necklace like Hailey's for her. I have her number so I can call her when I'm done." I smiled.
"Good, you can add the money to your boot fund." She was talking about the money I'd been saving to buy $50 boots. I already had $37.
"Yeah, I'm gonna go take a shower." I said. "I'm all sticky."
"Ok, dinner will be ready in an hour." She said.
"Alright." I said. I walked to my room and tossed my bag on the bed. I gathered my clothes and walked to the bathroom. It was small, but had a big enough shower. I stripped off my clothes and tossed them in the hamper, then got in the shower. The hot water on my skin felt so good that I sighed. My muscles ached from playing in the playground. I reached out and turned the stereo on. 'Rest In Peace' turned on from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer sound track. I sang along with it as I finished washing.
Once I was dried and dressed, I went to my room and pulled out my journal.
Dear Diary,
I think I might be gay. Or bi at least. I know this because I saw a girl today, her name is Ashley Hill, and I have a crush on her. She wants me to make her a necklace like Hailey's. She gave me her phone number so I can call her when it's done. It's 555-2824. She is so cool. Well I gotta go, dinner's ready.
Love, Caity.
