Video Games May Cause Blindness

Andrea

Joss sat in his living room floor, his face looking up at the TV as he played on his video game console. He concentrated, trying to defeat the said game, his green eyes intent on finding clues and finishing goals. Occasionally he moved his head to the side to brush his long brown hair out of his eyes. He needed it cut, but he had delayed the said occasion for a while now. His listening ears picked up the sound of the front door opening and he listened for his parents’ voices while still concentrating on the game.

“Joss, we’re home. Andrea is staying the night, so be nice.”

Joss mentally froze for a moment if Andrea or Andy had come that meant that his game play would not only be interrupted, but she would do anything in her power to get him in trouble or just plain aggravated. He shook his head and continued with his game. He would just have to try his best to ignore her; he was so close to defeating the game that he could withstand such a small obstacle.

In his peripheral vision he saw Andy enter the room. Joss continued his game and began to ignore her.

“Oh wow, Joss you really got far. Isn’t this the last level? You should know that when you pass that door there is going to be an ambush. You see I've already beaten the game.” Andy bragged as she watched him play the game.

Joss wanted to tell her to shut up but he told himself to ignore her. Andy moved her short black hair behind her ear as she looked at him curiously. Normally Joss was easy to tease or to get worked up, but for some reason her normal tactics weren’t working. She smirked; she would just have to try harder.

“Did you know I’m spending the night? Your parents said I could sleep in your room, and I am definitely not sleeping with you so you’re sleeping on the floor. Fair?” She waited for an answer but when he didn’t she continued. “I’m glad we have an understanding.”

When this didn’t work she became a bit upset and realized he really was ignoring her. She got up and sat by him. “Joss why aren’t you talking to me?” She asked as she poked him in the side. “Hello is anyone there?” She asked as she waved her hand in front of his face.

There was a loud, “Game over.” And Joss became very stiff. He wanted to punch her, yell at her, but he promised he wouldn’t let her get the best of him. Instead of his hands strangling her neck, he squeezed the controller before putting it gently on the ground and turning off the TV and the game system. He got up and left the room, unfortunately Andy followed.

His parents were busy making dinner and didn’t notice them heading to Joss’s bed room. Joss turned around to find Andy following him, and thought that this might not be a bad idea. He entered the room and turned to allow Andy in. She looked at him curiously but entered just the same. Joss closed the door behind him and glared at the girl who took a seat on his bed.

“What is your problem?” He said in a low yell. “Why can’t you just leave me alone for a small second? I know that your parents are friends of mine, but that doesn’t give you the right to think you’re welcome to my stuff.”

“I don’t want your stuff.” She said in a slight whisper. “I just wanted you to get away from those games. That’s all I've ever seen you do. You need human company, you know FRIENDS.”

Joss took a few steps forward so that he stood in front of Andrea. “I have friends…”

“Really, name one.”

Joss stared at her and his anger began to ebb away. “You.”

“Besides me.” She said almost smiling.

He sighed and put his hands in his pockets. “I can’t, because I don’t have any friends,” But before Andy could say I told you so he added, “But that doesn’t give you the right to bug me to the point I want to smother you.”

Andy felt her small bit of joy ebb away at what Joss just said. “I was just trying to get your attention.”

He looked up at her and grinned half heartedly. “There are other methods; I know you’ve heard of being nice.”

She grinned a grin that made Joss want to join her in the happy act. “But teasing you is more fun.”

Joss leaned down so that his breath lingered on her lips. Her grin disappeared just as fast as it had come. He let his lips touch hers softly, moving them so that he had her bottom lip between his. For the small moment they shared a kiss, their lips tingling at the sweet act. Andy didn’t move she couldn’t believe such a thing had happened. He pulled away but only enough so that his green eyes could look into her brown ones. Their hearts thudded against their chests as they looked at one another’s blushing faces.

Joss grinned, “Your right, teasing is more fun.”

Andrea’s heart did a flip and her stomach suddenly had butterflies. She was about to say something back, to confirm to Joss that she didn’t like the kiss, but his parents called them down to dinner before she could.
