The Disgust in Their Voices
‘Are you aware that you are pregnant?’
I stared at the doctor with disbelieve. I – was pregnant?
‘No,’ I mouthed hardly audible. ‘N-No, I didn’t.’
‘Well it explains why you’ve been feeling so sick and dizzy. That’s why you probably fainted. You should have some rest now because you’re obviously exhausted.
I know why – I hadn’t slept well in days and I had hardly eaten a proper meal in days. Ever since – he told me he would leave me, I had been neglecting myself.
‘Have you had unprotected intercourse?’ the doctor asked as he made some notes on my chart. He looked up to see if I would nod or shake my head. But I didn’t. I was too deep in my thoughts. But I remembered I had occasionally forgotten to take my pill, since I hadn’t been home that much. The situation with my mum had absolutely messed up my daily patterns
‘Do you know the father?’ the doctor asked and I nodded absently. ‘Do you wish to call your parents?’ he asked this time with more worry in his voice, probably because I wasn’t really answering his questions. But I shook my head. All I wanted right now, was him but I knew he would never wanted to see me if I told him I was expecting his child.
‘Do you wish to have it removed?’ the doctor cautiously asked. My eyes finally focused on his and I shook my head violently. I wasn’t going to lose the last remaining bit Dan had left me.
