Falling Into Place

Braelyn laced up her green converse and picked up her duffle bag. She took one last look at her bedroom and walked out the door. She felt little pieces of her heart break off and meld themselves to the walls as she walked down the hallways one last time. So, this was it. She was actually leaving. Her eyes stung with unshed tears, but she kept them at bay. She walked into the old kitchen and looked to each face as they stood there waiting for her to say her goodbyes.

She kept her composure and walked to Linda. She embraced her and tried to make a memory of Linda’s smell. Then she moved on to Catie, whose tears spilled out of her eyes like little waterfalls. Braelyn held the young girl for a length of time. Then she moved away and held her breathe.

She looked at his face and traced the contours and the little inflections that she had already memorized. He wouldn’t look her in the eye, he refused to. She walked up to him and went to stroke his face, but he turned away. What was left of her heart cringed and crumbled. Someday maybe he would understand. The tears that had yet to fall finally cascaded down her face.

She went to the door, cracked it open, and turned and said one thing.

“I love you.” Then she was gone.

Catie’s sobs grew as Linda bent down to comfort the young girl. The young man seemed to crumple to the ground. He held his head between his knees and cried until all that was in his heart was in a puddle on the ground. She left him and she wasn’t ever coming back.

Braelyn wasn’t like normal girls, not at all. She was a shade walker, a shadow hunter, the last of her race. She let the breeze take her, she had felt the darkness closing in on her for a few days now and no matter how much she tried to pretend, she couldn’t deny who she was. She couldn’t deny her blood.

Even if it meant…the breathe caught in her throat. Even if it meant leaving him.

“LINDA!” Catie screamed. Linda’s heart stopped. She bolted out the door and ran down through the meadow. She jumped over the narrow stream and towards the berry bushes where she knew Catie was picking blackberries. Catie stood stiff as a board, her complexion was pale and tears streaked down her face. A look of horror marred her usual happy appearance. Linda rushed to her side and knelt down to one knee.

“Catie, sweetheart, what is it? Are you alright?” Linda felt Catie’s arms and legs looking for any hurts or “owies”. Catie’s breathing was labored, that was always how she was when she got a panic attack.

“Catie, honey, look at me,” Linda said to her stroking her hair, “what frightened you?”

It took Catie a moment, but she looked over at Linda, “Behind the bu-bushes.” She raised her tiny hand and pointed. Linda stood and cautiously walked to the bushes, she pushed aside the brush and brambles and gaped at what she saw.

A young girl lay on the ground, blood soaked her shirt and her skin looked blue as if she had frozen. Linda turned the girl off her side to check her pulse, though it seemed pointless. Linda was sure she was dead. As she turned the girl over, she glimpsed something on the girl’s wrist…

When she saw the symbol she fell backwards as she scooted away from the body. The girl’s eyes fluttered open exposing the glittering blue that marked her as a shadow hunter. Linda stumbled up on her feet and grabbed Catie, holding her away from the form laying on the ground.

The shadow hunter was too exhausted to move, she briefly reached out towards them before she became unconscious once again.

“Oh, Linda. We can’t just leave her,” whispered little Catie.
