Part 1

The club was crowded, filled to capacity as it was every night, the techno beat loud enough to vibrate through the soles of your shoes to be felt deep in your very soul. The interior was dimly lit, split only by the flickering lights stabbing through the darkness to highlight faces for but a brief moment before they were shrouded once more.

Adam watched the dancers on the floor illuminated in the ever-changing neon lights as they moved to the music. He came here almost every Friday night, a ritual that he had been keeping ever since moving to this city. This was his haven, time out just for himself and away from the intensity of his job. As the youngest executive on the Board of an international company, his position was not just intense, it came close to being cut-throat. To remain at the top was a constant effort to prove himself to those that would only be too happy to see him fail, with or without their help. Still, he enjoyed the challenge, the pitting of one’s will against another, the chase, and best of all, winning. That is what kept him going, constantly striving forward to a higher goal.

Yet that meant that this one night was all the more important to him. It was the one time that he could let his guard down, forget about the pressures of work, and fully relax. It was only here and now that he could drop the calculating, cold façade he habitually wore and act more naturally, allowing his true personality to come to the fore.

He lifted one hand and brushed away the long fringe from his eyes. At work he kept his hair slicked back which gave him a rather severe look but helped foster the impression that he was older than his early thirties. Now, clean and freshly washed, his fringe fell forward into his eyes like a thin veil and the natural waves in the length that brushed his collar made it appear to ripple in the flashing lights, his Irish descent adding auburn highlights which were only noticeable under these conditions or bright sunshine.

Leaning back against the bar, resting elbows behind him, one foot propped on the railing at the base, he was fully aware his pose was rather provocative, thrusting his hips forward, as well as his chest. He caught more than one glance cast his way. Not surprising really, this was one of those clubs anyway.

He half chuckled to himself. Oh yes, the office would certainly be in an uproar if they found him here of all places. No-one at work knew that he was into guys. Well, to be factual he was bisexual. He’d dated both men and women and enjoyed their company equally well, although he realized as he got older he found he was developing a stronger liking for men than for women. Up till now there had been no guys at work who were his type for him to even think about hitting on; not that he would. He had a rule about dating in the work place – things could get far too messy. Still, that did mean that he was limited to trying to develop a relationship outside of work which proved more difficult every year.

He tucked his hair behind his ear with a small sigh, fingers brushing against the diamond stud earring. His rapid rise through the ranks to the position he now held also meant a corresponding increase in responsibility and workload, which had resulted in him not having had a steady partner for some years now. The upshot had always been their inability to accept the demands placed on him and they resented the time he spent involved with work matters. He in turn grew frustrated with this attitude. It wasn’t that he wanted to spend so much time working, yet that monopoly always placed tremendous pressure on his relationships.

Now it had become somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy. He had taken on the increased work over the years to fill in his time because he didn’t have a partner, which resulted in his rapid rise in position. However now, any relationship was almost doomed from the start because of the pressures. He hadn’t yet found a solution to this vicious cycle and had resigned himself to accepting the usual outcome that resulted.

However, that didn’t mean that he didn’t still go out and enjoy himself, nor did it stop him from seeking companionship. He’d simply acknowledged that it was unlikely to be lasting, despite his preferences.

He cast his eyes across the crowd before him to see just what possibilities this night held. He watched carefully to identify those who were truly couples, from those who were dancing or drinking together but were not. The first he made a rule of not trying to come between; the second were still possibilities.

Those obviously on their own and not connected with anyone had to be treated a little cautiously. There could be any number of reasons why they weren’t partnered up and if you were a regular at any club you soon learnt which ones to avoid. Like that not-so-young guy with the lank hair in the corner who was known to be HIV positive, but still went home with the unwary and didn’t tell his partners. Or that twitchy redhead, (well, red at the moment), with the multiple piercings up the ear who was a hard-line drug pusher. Or the moody brunette in the fishnet top who changed partners like people changed socks and spent most of his time crying on someone’s shoulder about how unloved he was before immediately picking up another, if not two, partners for the night.

Of course, not everyone was of that caliber. Most people here were quite ordinary people. They held steady jobs, some quite high profile just as he did. They liked their sports, they enjoyed a drink with their friends, all those things. The one thing they all had in common was that they liked guys.

As he lifted his drink, his eyes flitted past the faces when they were drawn back for a moment to a man sitting at the far end of the ‘L’ shaped bar which Adam leant against. The neon lights from the wall display illuminated his face clearly; strong featured, the nose long and straight with a square jaw, and black hair cut short. Adam admired him for a moment. It was a handsome face, in a place where handsome could be rather common.

Adam noted the man was dressed in a suit still, presumably having come straight from work. In some ways he looked so out of place that for a moment Adam wondered if perhaps he had wandered in here by mistake but was so desperate for a drink that he had stayed, despite the environment. However, he didn’t look uncomfortable in any way, and even responded calmly when approached by a young man who was obviously flirting, and was just as obviously politely rebuffed.

As he continued to assess the man, the other suddenly looked his way and for a moment their eyes met and locked. The intensity of the gaze surprised Adam, pulling him in even across that distance. It seemed that the noise surrounding him suddenly faded away and the world compressed into a narrow tunnel that held only the two of them. This tableau held for a heartbeat, then the man looked away, and the volume of the club seemed overwhelming as though Adam’s ears had to readjust themselves to its intrusion.

Adam mentally shook his head, letting out the breath he had for some reason been holding. He must have had one too many drinks on an empty stomach; he was imagining things now.

Hoping to avoid a similarly unnerving moment, Adam’s gaze moved on and now found exactly what he liked. A trio of young men were talking by the wall, one in particular catching his eye. He was young, early twenties at the latest: point one taken care of. Adam preferred them young; there were fewer expectations and thus fewer disappointments to be had. Not to mention that he enjoyed their greater stamina.

He was blond, another plus, and even better he had long hair, longer than Adam’s, reaching past his shoulders. Adam had found many years ago that he had a terrible weakness for long hair. He half shivered; thinking about the feel of that hair trailing over his body, teasingly tickling, making his skin tingle and drive him crazy with desire was a pleasant thought.

So far this youth had no strikes against him. The third deciding factor was his height. He was shorter than Adam, at a guess he’d only come up to about his shoulder, the perfect height to pull in close to his side. Adam enjoyed being able to feel protective of his partners, and the difference in height leant that illusion.

He took another sip when the young man turned and met his gaze for an instant, smiled shyly, before turning back to his friends. Adam chuckled as he set his drink on the bar and made his way through the crowd towards the group. As he drew nearer he saw one of the companions see him approach and jab at his blond friend who spun around just as Adam reached them, almost bumping into his broad chest.

Adam smiled down at the upturned face, into wide blue eyes filled with surprise, liking what he was seeing more and more.

“Interested in a dance?” he asked, extending his hand.

The blond looked down at his hand and then smiled, “Sure.”

As he led the younger man onto the dance floor, Adam dropped his head lower to speak into his partner’s ear so he could hear over the loud music. “What’s your name?” he asked.

The youth turned his head and Adam leant down closer, feeling the hot breath caress his ear as he answered, “Glen.”

Adam moved behind, slipping an arm round the slim waist, the other hand clasping one of Glen’s, letting his hips sway in time to the music, moving their bodies together as he lightly brushed his lips against the smooth cheek. “Then hold on tight,” he whispered, and felt the shudder that rippled through the shorter frame that he clasped against his own.

Adam’s attraction to Glen increased as the night wore on so he had no qualms in monopolizing him now he’d staked his claim, or warning off other would-be admirers. Glen also made it quite clear that he was more than happy with the situation.

When Glen crawled into his lap and nipped playfully at his bottom lip, Adam finally gave in. He didn’t frequent the club just to pick up someone for a one-night stand, and most times he came out and returned to his bed alone and still considered it a good night. It was more important for him to find some pleasant company, dance a little, and have a few drinks. Still, if things went further, well and good. If not, it really didn’t matter. However, he was also not going to throw away a chance of fostering a possible relationship if it was right before him.

Now he asked Glen outright, “Would you like to come back to my place?”

Glen smiled at him in that shy way and nodded. “Yes, I’d like that.”

Adam returned the smile warmly. “Come on then,” he said, standing and reaching down to assist Glen to his feet. He immediately draped his arm around the narrow shoulders, pulling Glen in tight against his side. Yes, he’d been right. Glen was just the right height to fit in nicely under his shoulder. “Let’s get out of here.”

As they made their way to the exit, his gaze settled on the man he had seen before, still in the same place he had been prior, at the end of the bar. His jacket was not even unbuttoned, yet he must have been there all night and it was warm enough inside the club. Again, their eyes met but the man gave no expression or sign he even recognized Adam from before. For some reason Adam felt a jolt of irritation at that.

Mentally shrugging, Adam pushed it to the back of his mind as he guided Glen out of the noisy club and they caught a taxi back to his place.
