Innocence Broken: Winter memories

Jason / Matt

Matt sat in the car watching as the snow began to cover the windshield of

cruiser; it was his first week in sex crimes and he was still trying to

understand his partner. Jason Turk was about 45, and going through his fourth

divorce, the now salt and pepper brown hair was cut close to his head and

clear brown eyes with bush eyebrows watched every move Matt made. Matt didn’t

know if he like the guy but they where partners for now and Matt was gonna

make this work, he lifted his head as Jason slid into the car next to him and

handed him a cup with a steaming liquid in it. Matt smiled and took a swing,

raising an eyebrow he turned and looked at the older man.

‘Hot chocolate?’

‘Yeah well,’ Jason shrugged a large grin spreading across his face, ‘I didn’t

know if you mommy let you drink coffee yet.’

Matt glared at the older man and was about to replay when the radio crackled

into life.

‘Turk come in.’

As Jason picked up the radio, Matt strapped his belt on and tipped the rest

of the drink out; nervous excitement crawled over his skin as he waited to

hear what was happening.

‘Turk here.’

‘Turk, we have a code five.’

‘Code five, go ahead.’

‘I’m showing a warren on your party, Max Jacobs. He’s at Aurora Av, possibly

armed.’

‘Copy dispatch, over.’

Matt blood boiled as the car jumped to life, the lights and sirens cutting

into the growing darkness, Jason glanced over at him.

‘You ready for this kid?’

‘I am...but can you’re heart handle this old man.’

Matt chuckled as Jason mutter something under his breath, turning the wheel

sharply, the car skidded and the headlights lit up the sidewalk. Matt watched

as the speed dialled climbed, watching the streets pass in a blur.

‘Ok Matt, look for a white male, 25 years old, 5’10 medium build with spiky

bleached hair.’

‘Got it.’

As the car slid into Aurora the headlights picked up the man, he turned and

looked directly at Matt in the police cruise and the world seemed to still.

Matt started to rip off his belt but the suspect already had his gun aimed

and squeezed the trigger.

At first Matt felt nothing, and then dampness began to spread over his chest

looking down he saw the dark red stain quick move over his clothing. He could

hear the sound of Jason returning fire, and shouting, this chest had started

to burn and each breath became harder. Suddenly his door was pulled open and

Jason was pulling him out onto the snow.

‘Kid, stay with me! Keep you’re eyes open!’

Matt saw Jason pick up the radio and start to speak but his voice sounded far

away, this vision blurred and his body began to feel numb. Jason was suddenly

back, his hands pushing Matt’s chest painfully the burning increased.

‘Hey kid keep you’re eyes open! Damn first week here and you get fucking

shot. You’re a pain in the arse kid.’

‘Stop calling me kid.’ Matt’s voice sound airy and weak to his own ears, the

cold snow was starting to seep through his clothing and bit into his

sensitive skin.

‘Yeah ok...I’ll stop calling you kid if you stay alive long enough to piss me

off.’

Matt chuckled and felt his body spasm as more of his blood stained the snow

around him; he wanted to ask how serious he was hurt but didn’t dare.

Jason suddenly smiled down at him, ‘hey just think of all the stories you can

tell the girls. Chicks love scars.’

Matt laughed again and shook his head, ‘no girls.’

The look on Jason face was priceless, Matt could see him trying to understand

what he had just been told, his eyes narrowed and then he shook his head.

‘Gees kid, I didn’t need to know that.’

Matt smiled and heard the sirens of the ambulance moving closer, the lights

soon lit up the street, washing the night away with red and blue bursts. He

let the paramedics move him and poke him until finally they lifted him into

the back of the van.

Matt let his eyes close, just wondering what would happen now, who would call

his family and friends. A voice above him forced his eyes open and a hand

reached down and gently gripped his.

‘Don’t worry Matthew, I’ll go tell them now, but you’ll be fine.’

Matt looked up at Jason and smiled; squeezing the other mans hand and then

letting it go listening to the bleep of machines and the slamming of doors.

Matt’s earlier fears of his partner had gone, now he trusted the man, he

believed that they could work together well and become close.
