CHAPTER ONE

He was a small boy, skinny, but full of spirit, despite the fact that he was orphaned at such an early age. His deep black hair and his bright emerald eyes always shimmered with life. But now was a different time in the young boys life. Now his hair was dull and matted to his head with sweat. His body seemed frail and delicate. As he lie in the bed, his breathing was haggard and shallow.

At the age of nine Jacob was dying.

"This is him?" A dark-haired man asked as he gazed into the room through a window on the door. A smaller woman nodded. "We have all of his files, correct?" he asked facing the woman.

"Yes, I gave them to the other gentlemen you arrived with." The man nodded and continued to look into the room. "It's a shame," the nurse said. "He's a great kid. All the other children love him." The man didn't respond. The woman looked at him and said, " we were going to place him with a family next week."

"Pity," the man stated coldly. A curious and confused look spread across the woman's face. He turned towards her. "Have him transported to our facilities at once. We can't have this little man dying on us, can we?" He forced a smile for this pitiful woman's sake.

A sad smile graced her face as she said hopefully, "I pray that you can help him."

The man nodded, cold smile still painted on his face. "We will do our best." He placed his hands on the side of her arms with a firm grip. "We will do. Our. Best."

It hurt to breath. It hurt to think. It hurt just to lay there. Jacob opened his eyes ever so slightly; little slits that allowed too much light to reach his pain-filled brain. Without turning his head, he let his eyes fall to the side where the sight of the door and a blurry figure looking in at the window fell into his view. The air got caught in his lungs as he took a breath in and he coughed weakly.

He closed his eyes.
