The Flipped Mercedes
~~~~~~~~~~
Lights of Gestapo agents cars and an ambulance flashed in the night.
A black Mercedes was resting on it's roof. A young woman
stood there as Gestapo men questioned her. Her eyelids were drooping.
A tall, thin woman made her way briskly down the street. She wore an SS uniform.
Her pace quickened upon hearing a child screaming.
"MOMMY!! DADDY!! HILDY!!" The SS officer's heart sank upon hearing this.
That meant only one thing. Her two year old niece was in the car.
Hilda raced over and jerked one of ambulance workers away. She peered in
to see her niece in her car seat. She was upside down.
"GET HER OUT!! NOW!!" Hilda barked at the ambulance worker.
Hilda rounded on the young woman. Her harsh gaze went from the
flipped Mercedes to the young woman. The other woman didn't
meet Hilda's gaze. She finally looked up.
"Hilda, say something. Yell at me, criticize me, hit me.
Just please do something!! Please, I'm your sister." The woman said.
"I have no sister, Helga." Hilda said, coldly.
"Ma'am, your niece is out." one of the ambulance workers said.
Hilda made her way over to the ambulance. Gert was crying
as she was examined. She calmed down a little upon seeing her aunt.
"Car. Turn over. Gert screaming." Gert said between sobs.
"I know, sweetie. It's ok." Hilda said, wiping away the tears that were forming in her eyes.
Hilda had been home ten minutes when she had heard a crash on the road
turning to her street. One of the SS men that was driving by had witnessed
what had happened and immediately told Hilda.
"Ma'am, there's been an accident on the main road. It's you sister." The man said.
"Keep the neighbors in doors. I don't want them to know what's going on." Hilda told him.
Hilda had a reputation and a family name to uphold. Helga could easily tarnish
both if anyone were to find out what she did behind closed doors.
Hilda had quickly made her way to the main road. Sure enough, Helga's car was
flipped on it top. Hilda wasn't surprised. Her heart sank upon hearing her two
year old niece screaming. Hilda went from heartbroken to livid. Helga had finally done it.
"If she wants to risk her life, that all fine and dandy. But endangering my
niece is going to too far!" Hilda thought angrily as she fought back tears.
Hilda fought back tears as she looked at Gert. Welts had started to form on her
neck due to the straps of her car seat.
The ambulance worker that was examining Gert finished and handed her to Hilda. A
black gloved hand brushed Gert's hair out of her eyes. Gert rested her head on
Hilda's shoulder. Within moments she was asleep.
