Prologue
Hebeny’s fingertips ran lightly along the cold stone wall. The chilling morning wind rushed intently by, ruffling her long charcoal-colored tresses on its way and tossing up leaves in a flurry around the girl’s lithe form. Clad in tights, a tunic, and light armor, Hebeny waited tensely for the familiar sound of the old bell.
It came as she knew it would, the steady gonging sound arriving to her ears upon the wind – faint yet unmistakable was the ring. Hebeny’s body stiffened instinctively and her heart raced. This was it. The last day of her youth and the first day of ever after. The girl glanced back once more, down at the little city in the valley. She could see her house and her best friend’s house and the healing academy and the palace…
Gleaming emerald eyes blinked and turned away. They would not look upon Dresdenville again for ten years.
