Tales of a lost prince

Prelude

In this dark room of the first castle of Maladaris on this fateful stormy night, I find myself, Shatara Nhasa, first prince to the throne, sitting across from my sworn rival. Since as long as I can remember, this man has been my rival throughout childhood and my only way to the ensured life of the throne. Nonetheless, I stand in his as well. This man, my twin brother, Kenya Nhasa, also first prince, and I are destined to fight and destroy one another in the name of our father, the king, and his queen, our second mother. Both which sit at the end of this long room, waiting for the preparations to be complete.

Yes, I remember the wedding day of our father and our second mother so vividly, our country merrily singing and celebrating for the king’s fortune of marriage once again. His new bride took me by the hand and led me into a different chamber, when we arrived, she told me about my brother’s ventures to kill me, being only nine years old at the time who was I not to believe her. His first bride, our real mother, died on the night of our birth, exactly nineteen years previous to the date, with that she said for him to live his life to the fullest and have happy memories with his twin sons.

Of course she also said this to by twin, for only one reason. She wanted the kingdom for herself and her expecting child. She was corrupt; our father never saw this through his love for her. She led our studies and guided each other into the hatred for one another. My train of thought broke upon hearing my father clearing his through, both my brother’s and my heads turn at the sound. He is standing when we look over, still respectable at his old age, his grey hair flowing to the throne he left.

“My sons… I only wish your feuding hadn’t led me to this decision, I am afraid that you both are equal in every way, shape, and form. Whether it be your studies, individual judgment, mannerism, even in the art of battle you are equal…” He paused then, looking to the window just past my brother and I. “My decision is this, you two must go out into the world, return within one ten year term, you will find the reason of how to guide the people by living among them, traveling among them, eating among them, and celebrating among them. When you return, tell me what you were taught by the people of the land.”

He stopped again, looking to the both of us, finding any sign of acknowledgement of out new teachings. Our new mother did. “But, what if neither one is to return with the knowledge of the land? What if they don’t come back at all?” she tried to act remorseful, but her ugly sneer shone through her mask. “If neither of you accomplish your quest your little brother, Krillian, will take the throne, you two are to leave tomorrow.” With that, our father and mother retired to their chambers, leaving us to do the same.
