Her Strength, His Weakness
By: Fugicakes

-------------------------------------Chapter One-----------------------------------

The day began like normal; Maru woke up to his alarm ringing loudly through his room. As it rang all that could be seen was a lean muscular arm reaching out from under the black sheets and midnight blue comforter to slam down the connected hand hard upon the alarm efficiently silencing it. Once again there was silence in the dark room and Maru was determined to take advantage of it. Moments later the dark maple double doors that lead to his room were thrown open and light pored in as well as a wide awake twelve year old girl. Grumbling Maru reluctantly faced the fact that his sleep had come to an end.

“Get up Maru! You need to get ready!” the twelve year old girl yelled as she jumped onto his California king bed and proceeded to rip off his sheets.

“Eeeewwww gross you only wear boxers to bed?!?!”

“Ava, I love you…really I do…but you need to learn not to rip my covers off like that” Grumbled the tired man while trying to bury his head under the pillow in a pathetic attempt to hide from the light.

“Why don’t’ you wear pajamas like me anymore? Is that something all 24 year olds do, cause you wore them last month?”

“Yeah Ava…that’s it…when you turn 24 all your pajamas stop fitting…” came the sarcastic reply from her older brother.

“Well, I guess SOMEBODY woke up on the wrong side of the bed today!”

“No, a little screaming kid woke me up.”

“I’m NOT a KID Maru, I am a TWEEN!!! How many times must I tell you that!”
Chuckling Maru sat up and sent her a playful grin “until it becomes a real word I’m afraid.”

“Butthead!” Was all he heard before Ava hit him in the face with one of the many pillows on the bed. While her brother was attempting to remove the pillow from his face with his tired hands Ava jumped off of the bed and ran for the large windows that ran floor to ceiling along the left side wall of the room. Reaching the windows she giggled as she pulled open the heavy midnight blue drapes, letting even more light into the room. Now that the room was lit up Ava could see her older brother’s room completely and decided that all boys no matter their age were messy. The room was large and full of her brother’s nice dark maple bedroom furniture, as well as his random art work hanging on the walls. However, it was not this that caught Ava’s attention, but the dirty clothes and random novels that littered his room.

“Geez Maru clean much?”

“hn…are you saying that I should have the maid pay a visit Ava?”

“No, I am saying you’re a slob. But having the maid visit would defiantly be a good idea.”

Maru looked at Ava and smiled, as she stood in the pathway of the light shining through the window he couldn’t help but be reminded of their mother. Ava looked so much like her, from her white-grey hair that was a genetic oddity passed down from their mother, to her honey golden eyes and constantly cheery smile. Ava was their mother Rika as a young girl; they even shared the same middle name, Marie.

“Why are you looking at my like that? Maru…your weird you know that right?”

“hn”

“Oh yeah, that’s a word.”

Giving her a grin Maru just shook his head. “I was just admiring those neat pajamas Ava, a real fashionable pair there kiddo.”

“HEY, you got me these! Ugg, just like I said…weird!”

“hn…so what are you doing up at this time?” looking at the crooked alarm clock Maru saw it was only 5:30 in the morning, “you are never up this early, you’re usually just getting up as I leave for work.”

Giving him a shocked look Ava yelled “YOU FORGOT!!!”

“WHAT…what did I forgot???”

Marching over to her brother Ava started to poke at his chest as she spoke.
“You promised me that you would give me a ride to school early today so that I could go to the library and meet Sarah to work on our project before school.”

“I did?...When?”

“UUGGG! Last night during dinner.”

“Dinner? You mean while I was looking over the quarterly reports?”

“I guess” was her quiet answer.

“Damn Ava you know I don’t pay attention to anything else when I’m going over paper work. Just hurry up and get ready the car leaves at 6:30, got that?”

Ava was suddenly up and running out of his room heading towards the bathroom down the hall near her room.

“Well then…I guess that’s a yes.”

Figuring that he too should be getting ready Maru started over to his connected bathroom. As like everything else in Maru’s life, the bathroom was giant and expensive. Walking in Maru found himself stopping momentarily to admire his looks in the full length mirror that ran the entire left hand side of the room.

“Damn I look good” was all he could say while inspecting the tan, brown eyed, white haired six foot tall man reflected back at him. Grinning at himself Maru turned to the walk-in shower and started the spray. While waiting for the water to warm he continued to brush his teeth, shave, and strip.

Thirty minutes later found Maru walking down the upstairs hallway in his all black suit with a black button-up underneath. Before reaching the stairs he found himself joined by Ava in her school uniform.

“Why do you always wear black? It’s SO dark.”

“Cause it looks good on me, why else.”

“Hump, I wish I could wear whatever I wanted.”

“And what is so bad about your school uniform? At least it’s not that pinkish red like my old one used to be.”

“It’s dorky and green; wish is the one color I hate if you remember correctly. And your uniform was red not pinkish red.”

“That may be, but after the first wash the crappie material lightened enough to be considered pinkish.”

“Well that doesn’t change the fact that I don’t like the color.”
Looking down at his sister Maru just couldn’t understand what her problem was. To him she looked cute wearing her little green skirt and vest, however he would never tell her that for he would never hear the end of it.

“Well if it’s any consolation you will be in high school in a few more years and then your color will be that pinkish red.”

By this time they were at the kitchen. Walking in Maru wiped his face of all emotions, as usual, not one other person other that Ava had really seen Maru show emotion. It was even rumored that he didn’t have any, for he was always stoic and cold walking around with an emotionless face. This helped to attribute to his reputation for being the cold emotionless president and owner of Cane Enterprises, leaving everyone afraid of him. This coupled with the fact that he was known for only using women and very rarely the same one twice, Maru was seen as heartless. All of this was fine by him for it meant that he was only bothered when he needed to be, didn’t have to deal with commitment, and didn’t have to work hard to keep up appearances. For even being the way he was with everyone other than Ava, Maru was still at high demand, well respected and even more desired.

Sitting at their usual seats Lisa, the household cook, came out with their meals. Chocolate chip pancakes for Ava and eggs and bacon for Maru.

“Thank you Lisa” chirped a happy Ava while Maru ignored Lisa as he did every other day. Turning on the news for he didn’t get to watch it last night, the two began to eat.

~The police are still looking for the ten missing high school students from a month ago. Though the parents still hold hope that they are going to find them alive, there are many that fear it hopeless.~

Hearing the news lady speak of the well known topic both siblings looked up to the television only to see the pictures of the faces of the missing; faces that by now were well engrained in the minds of the populous.

“They still haven’t found them?”

“Appears not.”

“Is it true that they found the teacher on the bus gutted Maru? Cause Maggie and Keik said that they did.”

Looking at his sister Maru couldn’t help but lie, she was still too young in his opinion to know such horrifying truths.
“I don’t know Ava; I think that was just a rumor.”

Sadly though it wasn’t a rumor, the poor teacher truly had faced such a gruesome demise. A month ago there had apparently been a school graduation trip allowing the graduates and two of their chosen guests to go on a trip to the coast for three days. For some reason ten of the students were delayed in getting to the buses for the trip home and got left behind. One teacher had stayed behind as a chaperone for the ten. They ended up having to catch a public bus back to the school though because the chartered one they were to take was having engine trouble. According to witnesses the bus took off well before noon, however by night the next day had yet to show up. The authorities had found it on the side of the road covered in the teacher’s blood, the teacher gutted, and the bus driver with the ten students missing. Not a trace of any of them had yet to be found.

~on hopeful note, the police have announced that they now know how those students were taken. They have found residue of a weird gas in the ventilation system of the bus...~

It was here that Maru started paying attention again. ‘I hope that it wasn’t one of ours used, it could really hurt the company with how sympathetic everyone is on this topic’ was all Maru could think. This seemed to be the major downside of having a medical and chemical research and manufacturing company, everyone associated the company with the uses of the product.

“I hope they are all ok…Hey Maru, that’s not the high school I’m going to go to is it?”

“No, it would be your rival school. Come Ava it is time to go.”
Saying this Maru stood up and started to walk towards the front door, grabbing his suitcase on the way.

“Right, time to go…”

Standing on the porch waiting for the limo Ava couldn’t help but ask the obvious.

“Why are we taking the limo today, you never take the limo.”

“Because somebody keyed my car and you can’t ride my bike with me.”
“Why can’t I?”

“Your helmet has yet to come in and I won’t let you ride without one, the road has already taken mom and dad from us I won’t take the chance of giving it a better chance to take you also.”

With this the limo pulled up and they got in. The ride was relatively short and quiet. Stopping in front of the school, Ava jumped out and gave her brother a hug and kiss goodbye.

“Be careful Ava, I’m not crazy about you being here this early.”
After he was sure Ava was safely in the school, Maru ordered the driver to take him to work.

Again the ride was quiet, that is until the driver drove past the turn he was to take.

“Jimmy you missed the turn.”

There was no response

“Jimmy?”

Again nothing

“Jimmy!” this time if anyone had paid close attention they would have been able to hear the anger in Maru’s tone. This time he gat a response of which was the raising of the divider.

‘what the hell?!?’ Maru thought as a gas started to come through the ventilation system. It was then that he remembered the news report earlier that morning.

“SHIT!” was all Maru yelled as he dove for the door only to find it locked. The last thing he thought as he started to pass out was ‘at least Ava got out’.
