Hips And Hearts

~~~Hips and Hearts~~~
Everyone knew that Pete West and Bethany Rosedale were the best of friends; since kindergarten when a bully pushed Bethany into a puddle of mud and Pete kicked the bully in the shin. Ever since that day, the two were instant best friends.
Pete and Bethany did everything together; soccer, basketball, theater, and they even shared their first kiss together out of sheer curiosity. Even in high school, when most ‘best friends’ went their separate ways, their bond held them together.
Due to the fact that they always were seen together, rumors where spread about them secretly dating. Of course, they paid to attention to the rumors. They were best friends and they knew the real story, which was all that mattered to them.
“Pete! Come on, please!” Bethany hugged the phone close to her ear as she begged her best friend. She had already auditioned but knew that there was still time to get Pete in the play, but only if she hurried. Thankfully the new theater teacher auditioned the boys and girls separately.
“Beth, you know I hate the new theater teacher. So why would I want to be in one of his plays?” Pete use to love acting with Bethany, until the new theater teacher was hired. Now he refused to act in any high school plays at all. Pete would never let Bethany know the real reason as to why he hated the new teacher, but he couldn’t and wouldn’t act for him. Ever, and that was that.
“Cause I’m your bestest friend and you love me and want to make me happy!” Bethany paused for a moment, now realizing that she needed to pull out the big guns if she was going to get her way. “And if you don’t do this, I’ll tell your mom you smoke pot and forced me to smoke with you in the garage last summer.”
“WHAT?! First off, you wanted to try it and you liked it. Second, NO! Now just drop it Bethany.” Whenever Pete called her by her full name it was bad. Of course, she hated the nickname ‘Beth’, but it was part of their routine now and Bethany liked it when Pete called her it. Just as long as no one else called her ‘Beth’; just her Pete.
“Fine, I’ll stop.” Both of them knew Bethany would never stop till she got her way or it was too late and the play was already running.
“Thank you. Now, do you think I should dye my hair blue?” Pete was one of those emo-ish boys with a sort of prep quality in him; which caused him to be a rather significant character in many girls’ fantasies. Bethany, on the other hand, wasn’t ‘emo’ or preppy, she was sort of just Bethany. She had long honey brown hair and golden chocolate eyes. By no means was she plain; she was beautiful, lovely, and charming. Pete had always though that she was the picture perfect image of a princess; untouchable.
“We go through this every week. You aren’t going to dye your hair, and that’s finial.” Bethany loved Pete’s raven black locks that he wore slightly shaggy nowadays.
“Fine, be a bug.” When Bethany and Pete were growing up, they knew they weren’t allowed to swear. So they decided to try and come as close as they could with other words. Bug for b*tch, duck for f*ck, and so on and so forth. They were only seven at the time so most of the words they used were either animals or candy, but they still continued on with their odd childhood habits.
“I will be! I very cute and adorable one, thank you very much!” Bethany loved how she could just be herself with Pete. He had no expectations for her to reach; like her father. Nor did he criticize every little thing she did; like her mother. Bethany heard Pete’s mother call him for dinner, she knew he had to leave. Dinner time was a very important tradition in the West household; one that Bethany took part in at least 3 times a week. “You can go.” She said in a very glum and sorrowful voice.
“I promise I’ll IM you when I’m done, okay?” Pete knew that Bethany’s family was; well, not very family like. They never had dinner together and they barely even talked to one another. Bethany’s father was a drunk and was either passed out in bed or at the bar. He hadn’t always been like that though; when Bethany was 10 years old, he was laid from his job at the local tire factory. Bethany’s mother was an ex-pageant queen who worked as a waitress at a 24 hour truck stop. She never wanted to be a mother and made it very clear that Bethany was a mistake from the beginning. Thankfully, Bethany’s grandmother took care of her as best she could. Paying bills for the family and giving Bethany a computer and internet access for her 16th birthday.
“Promise you’ll IM me?”
“I swear on Tucker I’ll IM you!”
“Well, now you have to. Otherwise you just signed your dogs’ death certificate.”
“I know. I’ll talk to you soon. Bye Beth.”
“Bye Pete.”
Bethany waited almost an hour and a half at her computer for Pete to sign on. Just as she was about to give up a very familiar window popped up in the corner of her screen.
::PunkNPete has signed on::
PunkNPete (8:47:07 PM): sorry.. but Dylan decided that tonight was the night to tell my folks he’s gay…
SoxHop1957 (8:47:10 PM): Wow, how’d they take it????
PunkNPete (8:47:19 PM): Shockingly well I guess for hard core Christians…
SoxHop1957 (8:47:21 PM): Did they make attempts to try and ‘save’ him????
PunkNPete (8:47:30 PM): right now actually… it’s sorta funny… how could they have not seen it comin?
SoxHop1957 (8:47:35 PM): Lol, well he did come out to us over 5 years ago. Has he told your folks about Mike?
PunkNPete (8:47:41 PM): Idk, but I hope my parents get over it soon though….
SoxHop1957 (8:47:58 PM): Yeah, me2. Remember when Dylan first introduced you to Mike??? LOL!!
PunkNPete (8:48:08 PM): … it wasn’t funny…
SoxHop1957 (8:48:16 PM): YES IT WAS!!!
SoxHop1957 (8:48:31 PM): Fine. It wasn’t, sorry
SoxHop1957 (8:49:01 PM): Umm, Pete??? You can’t be ignoring me because I think it was funny that you met your gay brothers’ boyfriend while wearing a blue sequined mini skirt and tank top that said, “I wanna be the next Mrs. Pitt!!!”
::PunkNPete has gone idle::
Bethany hated when he up and left, but she knew he always had a good reason. So, like a good best friend she was she waited; just thankfully he wasn’t mad at her. Just then her phone rang. Bethany looked at the caller ID and didn’t recognize the number.
“Hello?”
“Hi, is Bethany Rosedale there?” It was an older man, with a familiar voice.
“This is she. May I help you?”
“Oh, well this is Mr. Turner, your theater teacher.” Bethany felt like an idiot for not recognizing his voice.
“Oh! Mr. Turner, how are you?”
“I’m great; but I actually called with some news about this years play.” Bethany hoped he had called to tell her she had won the role of Polly, the best friend of Lulu, the main character. Secretly though, Bethany had wanted to play Lulu. However, she never thought she was quite the ‘star material’ needed for the part.
“Oh really?” Bethany was nervous; she loved acting but was still a typical teenage; fearful of rejection.
“Yup, how would you feel about playing Polly?” She knew it. Although she had wanted to play Lulu, the part of Polly was still an important role to the play.
“I’d be flattered, thank you very much Mr. Turner.”
“Well, don’t be; you aren’t going to play Polly.” Bethany was shocked; she didn’t think that Mr. Turner was the type to play such a cruel joke, was she wrong about him?
“Oh, well… “
But before she could finish her thought Mr. Turner interrupted her. “You’ll be playing Lulu, if that’s alright with you?”
“Yes! Oh my gosh, thank you so much Mr. Turner! I can’t believe it!” Bethany was stunned and could hardly contain her excitement.
“Why not? You’re an amazing actress Bethany. Beautiful, charming and seductive.” Bethany was a little taken a back by Mr. Turners compliments. “It’s as if the role of Lulu was written for you.”
“Mr. Turner, thank you again.” She was beginning to feel awkward; no one ever complimented her besides Pete. Even then it was hard to swallow.
“Well, it’s late. I’ll see you tomorrow in class Bethany, goodnight.”
“Goodnight Mr. Turner.”
“It’s Nate.”
“Excuse me?”
“My name is Nate. Everyone in the play is going to end up calling me Nate anyways, might as well start now, right?” Bethany felt a little odd calling an adult by their first name, but since he was her teacher she did as she was asked.
“Alright, well goodnight Nate.”
“Goodnight Bethany.”
Bethany hung up the phone and quickly made her way back to her computer; hoping that Pete would be back so that she could share her good news.
::SoxHop1957 has returned::
PunkNPete (9:15:53 PM): finally…where’d ya go?!
SoxHop1957 (9:15:57 PM) I GOT THE LEAD!!!
PunkNPete (9:16:03 PM) what?
SoxHop1957 (9:16:08 PM): Mr. Turner called and told me I got the part of Lulu!!!!! Isn’t this great!!!
PunkNPete (9:16:13 PM): Yea, congrats. It’s late tho… I got to go to bed. Congrats again and goodnight Bethany.
::PunkNPete has signed off::
Bethany was stunned by Pete’s reaction to the news. How could he have just blown her off like that? Bethany went to bed with tears behind her chocolate eyes shortly after Pete’s little display of dismissing her big news.
Pete laid in bed thinking about how to get Bethany out of that play. He cared for her more than anyone else in his life and didn’t want her to get hurt, nor did he want her finding out about his secret.
