Winner Take All
February 2007
Lexi looked absolutely beautiful.
It was the first thought through Adam’s mind as he stared across the room at the girl, who was kindly shaking the hand of almost every person in the dining hall. Her blonde hair, which had lost all traces of the brown she had rebelliously dyed it, was tied up in an elegant knot, and little wisps dangled in front of her face. The dress suited her well, modest in all the right places, but accenting her figure.
Yes, Lexis Cross was definitely beautiful. . . But this was not a thought that Adam should have been thinking about his ex-wife.
Raileigh pulled on his arm, drawing Adam’s attention back to her. The smile she had plastered on her face left as she spotted Lexi in the crowd, laughing with a group of businessmen. She rolled her blue eyes slightly and leaned closer to Adam, her lips at his ear. “Looks like Lexi has moved on rather fast, hasn’t it? She doesn’t even look like the same girl anymore.”
It was true. Lexi didn’t look like the same girl that he had seen almost a year ago. She was a little bit taller, and had regained some of the weight she had lost during the whole divorce affair. There was a natural cheeriness to her aura, one Adam had seen in private. Away from the cameras and the tabloids. Not to mention the drama.
Speaking of the drama, it was currently tugging on his arm again. He ignored her momentarily.
Lexi turned and for a moment, their eyes met. It was funny to watch her reaction, for she had clearly not thought he would be here. Her green eyes widened the tiniest bit, and a hint of a smile crept over her lips. She nodded toward him once.
He nodded back.
Raileigh, the hawk she was, noticed the exchanged between them. She pulled Adam closer and rested her head on his shoulder, her eyes narrowed at Lexi. Her entire demeanor said “Back off. He’s mine.”
Adam pushed her off of his arm, briefly noticing the hurt glance that Raileigh sent his way. “Excuse me for a moment.”
Her eyes narrowed again. “You’re going to see her?”
“Of course.”
Raileigh crossed her arms and shook her head. “Adam, you know that this won’t do any good. It ended a long time ago. . .can’t you just let it go?”
A roll of his eyes sent the hurt expression back to her face. “It’s not as if I’m going to be shacking up with her tonight, Raileigh. Lexi and I . . have some things we need to discuss. Please. I’ll be back later. Excuse me.” Adam didn’t wait to hear her reply - he was too busy trying to find Lexi in the crowd again.
She was conversing with random people again, but when she saw him, her face lit up. “Adam Hunter. I didn’t expect to see you here.” Lexi smiled at him, then turned to the men she had been talking to. “Excuse us for a moment, won’t you?” Lexi grabbed Adam’s arm and pulled him to a corner, where she proceeded to throw her arms around his neck. “I’ve missed you!” she exclaimed.
It was hard not to laugh. He let out a small chuckled and untangled himself from her. “I thought you would never want to see me again.”
Lexi snorted. “Oh please. After all that you and I went through together? Right now, you know that at least five paparazzi are studying are every move and our ‘affair’ will be posted all over the tabloids tomorrow. Again.” She smiled. “They really don’t seem to care that we were married, do they?”
“Or the fact that it’s been nearly a year since I’ve seen you.”
Lexi lost a bit of her smile. “Well. . . Yes.”
Adam took a quick glance around the meeting room. “I don’t see Gabriel anywhere. Didn’t he come with you?”
She shook her head. “I never got back with Gabriel, Adam. We’re still friends, and we talk. . . But to be honest, I don’t think he’s ever quite forgiven me. Or forgiven you.”
“Remind me again exactly what we need to be forgiven for?”
Lexi ignored his question, looking over his shoulder and raising an eyebrow. “I see that you are back together with Raileigh.” She sent a small wave over his shoulder, and then laughed. “She absolutely loathes me.”
Adam had to snort at that. It wasn’t far from the truth. “So. . Um. .” He searched for words, not exactly sure what he should be saying at the moment. This was completely out of the norm for him, and when had talking to Lexi been so . . . Hard? Even during the beginning of their marriage, when things were completely unstable and they couldn’t stand each other, she had always been easy to talk to.
Why was it so hard now?
He settled for a simple question. “How have you been?”
“Busy. Dad’s putting stuff together for his next campaign. .”
“So who will you be married to this time?” He grinned at her, and received one back. Both rolled their eyes.
“Well, you know, there is that really cute prince over in England. I’m sure that he has some money, and it might help politics with England if I married him. .” Lexi let out a sigh. “A girl can only dream, can’t she?”
Lexi’s purse suddenly became a musical instrument, and she blushed, pulling her cell phone from her purse quickly. She took a look at the caller idea and rolled her eyes. “Adam, I have to take this. It’s my father and . .”
He understood. “Will I get to see you again sometime?”
She hesitated for a brief instant, then nodded slowly. “Maybe sometime. For a while. Charlie misses you.”
“Amazing. He hated me a first.”
“Adam, he was a baby. He didn’t know any better. He’s almost two now. And he won’t chew up your furniture anymore.”
“Or poop on my floor, or throw up on my couch. . .”
Those green eyes nailed him with a harsh look. “Stop criticizing my dog.” Her cell phone lit up again, and Adam sent a nod toward her, wrapping one arm around her waist and pulling her closer.
“Call me sometime. Please, Lexi.”
Lexi said nothing, but nodded and gave him a small peck on the cheek. With a wave, she disappeared into the flurry of people, leaving Adam standing in the middle of the room, wondering if all had that just happened.

Author's Note: A new story! This one is a little bit different than any other I have written. It is about an arranged marriage (though a little odd xD), but it is a lot of fun. This will not be all 'drama!" and "angst!". I'm usually in a very light-hearted mood when I write on this, so that should tell you a little something. This will be going back in time actually telling about their story, hence why I have the month and the year at the top. Reviews are very appreciated!
