Pieces
Chapter One

I tried to be perfect,
But nothing was worth it,
I don’t believe it makes me real.
I thought it’d be easy,
But no one believes me,
I meant all the things I said.
Pieces ~~ Sum 41

Lachlan Murchinson sighed as he sat perched on the edge of his bed, a soft white towel slung around his waist. His fiancée, Abigail Buckley, sighed audibly as he tried to will away the tense knots in his back. She huffed at him and he heard the tell-tale hiss if a lighter and he turned around sharply.
“I thought I told you not to smoke around me.” He growled, the sharp tang of cigarette teasing his three year cigarette free nose.
“Fuck you.” She snarled back, blowing a plume of cigarette smoke his way.
“Look Abby, I’m sorry.” He told her, running his fingers through hid dark hair.
“I’m sure you are.” She snapped angrily.
“Abigail. I really am sorry.” He stood, dropping the white towel as he pulled his pajama pants on.
“So you should be. We’re going to be married in three months.”
“I know. It won’t happen again.” She stubbed out her cigarette and patted the bed next to her. He sat down next to her, grabbing her hand and weaving their fingers together.
“Do I get to know who she is?” She asked softly and Lachlan blinked at her incredulously. She stared right back.
“Margot?” He asked, stalling for time.
“You said her name while we were making love, I think I have the right to know.” She reasoned, the bed sheets pooling at her waist as she shifted, releasing them from her protective grip.
“She was a one time thing gone horribly wrong.” He eventually said.
“Meaning?” Abigail prodded.
“We had sex and she got pregnant.” He simplified as he rested his head on her shoulder.
“You have a kid? But I thought you didn’t want children?” She said as she softly stroked his soft brown hair.
“My parents got involved and she was poisoned and she lost the baby.” He replied quietly.
“Is that why you don’t want children?”
“It hurt so much losing the first one, I don’t think I could handle another one. The worry alone would kill me.” He murmured as he pressed his lips against her neck.
“But what about me Lachlan. I want to have kids.” He sighed heavily.
“I know but it might take a while for the trauma to go away.”
“You better get going.” She told him as she glanced at the clock on their bedside table.
“I have an extra twenty minutes this morning.” Lachlan stood and made his way over to the closet.
“Why?” She asked suspiciously.
“I’m meeting with an old friend about a possible business venture.”
“Anyone I know?” Lachlan shook his head.
“Probably not, she’s Elizabeth’s half-sister.”
“Oh. What’s her name?”
“Francesca or Lucretia she goes by both.”
“Well, have a nice time.” She called as he walked out the door to make breakfast.

“Are you sure you’ll be alright?” Margot Fontainne frowned at her younger sister.
“Calm down, I’m not a total freak I ca take care of my niece.” Devon protested unhappily as she pressed a soft kiss to Marianne’s soft, pale forehead.
“Alright, but don’t forget to call me if anything goes wrong.” Margot intoned, chewing her lower lip as her daughter, Marianne, was lowered into the passenger seat of her sister’s car. Marianne obediently strapped on her seatbelt before smiling and waving at her mother. Margot handed her sister Marianne’s bag and blew a kiss to her daughter as they drove a few minutes later. Margot sighed and went up the pathway into her parent’s house to finish her breakfast before heading off to work.
“What are Devon and Marianne doing today?” Margot’s mother asked as Margot slid into her seat at the kitchen counter.
“Going to visit one of Devon’s friends who is babysitting her nephew.” Margot replied as she bit into her toast.
“Is everything okay at work darling you usually get the school holidays off?”
“Mix up at work.” Margot replied as she finished her chewing.
“Is this friend’s Devon’s visiting the one she’s going into business with?”
“The cute, bouncy one?” Parker asked as he breezed into the kitchen.
“Parker? What are you doing here?” Margot asked shocked to her see her older brother at home. Parker put two pieces of bread in the toaster and pushed the lever down as he fiddled with the knob to burn his toast
“I could ask you the same thing.” He said as he slid into the stool next to her, pressing his lips against her temple as he settled down.
“I was dropping some stuff off for mum so Devon met me here so she could pick up Marianne.”
“Dropping off stuff? Meaning the divorce papers?” Parker raised an eyebrow at her.
“For heavens sake Parker, we’re getting divorced it isn’t such a big deal.” Their mother snapped and Parker blinked.
“It’s just odd is all.” Parker said.
“Besides, It’s very nice of your sister to get her firm to sort our divorce out.” Margot flushed as Parker turned his big blue eyes towards her.
“It is. Sometimes I forget about my itty bitty sister being a big time lawyer.”
“I’m not a big time lawyer.” She interrupted.
“Close enough.” Parker said, waving her off.
“Now all she needs is a boyfriend.”
“Mother. Please don’t start on my love life.” Margot protested as Parker began buttering his charred toast, suddenly interested in his family’s conversation.
“You last boyfriend he was nice. Gary wasn’t it?” Her mother prodded.
“Graham. And he was an arse.”
“Oh, but what an arse.” Parker wiggled his eyebrows suggestively as Margot groaned.
“Please leave me alone.”
“No chance in hell sweetie.”
