The Dragon's Child

This fic is very different from my last one I’m still currently writing. I hope you enjoy it, and don’t worry I will still be writing my other one too. Hope you enjoy.

THE DRAGON ‘S CHILD

PROLOGUE

Long, long ago before the mountains formed in South Asia. Before dogs were tame beasts. Before dragons and dinosaurs were hunted to extinction, there lived a crazy woman named Clarn, but this story is not about her; this story is about her newborn son.

When Clarn realized she was about to give birth, she left her town, and went to the deadly beach by the Sea of Monsters. After giving birth to a baby boy, she left her infant on a pile of rocks, and walked into the sea, where she was instantly consumed by the inhabitant of the sea, that its home was named after.

Meanwhile, a dragon, Ralque by name, was flying to his favorite sunning spot on the beach of the Sea of Monsters, a safe distance from the sea’s inhabitant of course. When he landed, he heard a sound, that makes every dragons’ mouth water, a human baby’s cry for its mother. Ralque followed the direction of the crying, lips smacking with the anticipation of the rare treat. He was cautious, for not many human mothers leave their child for to long, nor do they go far from their young, so one must always be careful when taking a human baby. Human mothers will fight like demons when they’re defending their young, even when against a hungry dragon.

Although Ralque found the babe unguarded and alone, he did not rumble with delight and swallow the infant whole, as he planned. Instead, he backed up and flared his wings in disgust.

The babe was not what Ralque expected. The newborn was not plump and meaty, no, it was tiny, so very thin, that you could see all his tiny bones as well as if you were looking at his skin, and was awfully deformed. So deformed, in fact, that, in Ralque’s opinion, the babes arms, legs, hands, and feet looked almost exactly as his own did.

In those days, dragons could speak and had a high intelligence, though they weren’t as wise as latter dragons; nor did they have a strong ability to understand any other different creature’s ways. Dragons tend to either avoid or punish creatures that did not have “acceptable” ways.

“Who are you? What are you?” demanded Ralque. The babe stopped crying and stared at the large dragon. “Why do you not answer?!” he growled with frustration. Having learned to speak while still in the egg, he didn’t understand that most creatures, especially ordinary humans, learn how to speak long after birth, but the babe was no ordinary human baby.

“I...I...I...n-n-ne-e...ver hear...d a question sp-sp-spok-en to me before. A-and I ne-ver had anyone to sp-speak to before; the first clear sound, that wasn’t the sea, was a shriek of a w-w-woman.” The newborn stated, improving his speach with every syllable.

“Ah,” Ralque replied, “then your mother brought you here to feed you to a wild dog, or perhaps the monster, who dwells in the lake. After seeing how deformed you are, of course, shed want to kill you.” This, to Ralque, was what any sensible mother would do, for dragon mothers did so often.

“But I have always been in this same spot my entire short life!” the boy stated indignantly, “Clarn, my mother was swallowed by a monster in the sea over there.... that’s when I heard the female scream...”

Ralque realized he’d been a fool to be surprised at what the human mother had done. His lessons when he was a dragonet had taught him to expect the opposite of what was usual when dealing with human mothers. But this, he thought was unusual behavior, even for a human. So reasonably, Ralque said, “Your mother was crazy, even by you human’s standards.”

“Why?”

“Well, most mothers would cast a son as deformed as you to the monsters. Only crazy mothers feed themselves to the monsters and allow their sons to live.” Ralque explained.

Changing the subject suddenly, the babe said, “what’s your name?”

“My name’s Ralque, whats yours?” was the dragons responce.

“I have no clue, do you know what it is?” the babe asked hopefully.

Ralque sighed, this child was exasperating, “No, I wouldn’t have asked you if I knew, now would I?” Then a thought struck him, among dragons, the father, or oldest male relative, chose their offspring’s name. “Would your father know your name? Do you know if he still lives?”

I’m not certain, I’ve never seen my father, but Clarn spoke of him often, before I was born. I...I think he still lives, but I don’t know where he’d be,” the boy said sadly.

Ralque suddenly realized, in the few minutes knowing him, he had become emotionally attached to the human infant, whom he had thought about eating several minutes before. After he realized this he said casually, “I”m extremely bored, so I suppose I could help you find him.” Ralque looked at the boys glowing smile and realized he would have to call him something till they discovered his true name, so he said, “I must think of a name to call you till we learn your true name.”

As he said this he reached down and picked up the babe in his fore paws he felt something strange on the boy’s back. He carefully turned the baby over onto his stomach and exclaimed, “You have dragonet wings on your back!”

The babe climbed unsteadily to all fours and looked at the ground where he had just lain, confused, “Isn’t that normal?”

“No! No, human I’ve ever heard of has ever had wings!”

The boy nodded thoughtfully, “then I guess wings would be a good name to call me. Now can we begin to search for my father, pleeeeeease?” Ralque nodded and picked him up in his for claws and takes off flying toward the nearest human town.
