We Could Not Meet
Lucas snuggled deeper in my arms, smiling up at me. My lips curled into a distant smile and I squeezed him a bit tighter. Currently, my mind was in a darker place, instead of on the young mortal on my lap, thinking of the ones before him. My name, Azrael, should give an idea of just how old I am. It is a name of ancient times, supposedly a name belonging to an Archangel, though I no longer believe in such creatures.
Enough with my name though, I decided, shaking my head a bit to clear it of thoughts before focusing once more on platinum blond hair before me. I smiled, kissing his head gently before glancing over at the clock, “Fuck…” I hissed aloud, not explaining myself until Lucas’ pale grey eyes glanced back at me, “Almost time for you to go, dearest,” I expanded for him, hugging him close once more.
Parting with the seventeen-year-old was painful, since we could only sneak in meetings about once a week, if we were lucky. After Lucas’ conservative mother caught us kissing one night, we have been forbidden from seeing each other. Now, meetings were conducted in secret at the public library where Lucas did all his studying for school. As a senior, the boy spent much of his time doing homework, but only once a week would his mother drive him to the library to study or do papers.
In ten minutes, his mother would be here and I would have to make myself scarce. Thank the Goddess that this library had two floors. Currently, we were cuddled up in one of the lounge chairs on the bottom floor. We were in the back of the adult reference section, a thick Encyclopedia resting on our laps, though now that our time was almost up, Lucas slipped a piece of paper into it, marking his page on panthers before shutting the book with a rather satisfying thud.
I chuckled when I saw the edge of a smirk on his cheek, leaning forward to kiss his cheek. As per usual, the next five or so minutes would be spent with simply snuggling, perhaps peppered with brief kisses. Sure, we wanted more, but we worked with what we could, and this was a public place; the Encyclopedia was set on the floor and my boyfriend turned to press a kiss to my pale lips, which was easily returned.
A few more pecks and my teeth moved to press gently against the other’s light skin posing a silent question. There was only a second of hesitation before Lucas nodded, “Not too much though, Rae, only have a few minutes to recover…” With the permission, I let my sharp canines pierce only a little of his neck, far away from the main veins and arteries in his neck. I let them withdrawal, licking up the drops of blood silently.
I always lost track of time when I tasted my boyfriend’s blood, and Luc always remembered to watch it for me; it had been two minutes before he pulled away, whispering that it had been enough. Usually, I never feed in public, but I was addicted to the strong blood and I would spend my day in the library, unable to escape until darkness had fallen. At that point, I planned to collapse wearily into my bed and sleep until tomorrow night, so I needed the small amount of blood to keep myself from having to hunt tonight.
Lucas reluctantly slid off my lap after I had carefully licked the wound to heal it, leaving no sign that he had been bitten by a vampire. A final kiss for the day and my mortal picked up the Encyclopedia and I walked with him to the top of the stairs, concerned because I had taken the blood, even though it was only a little bit. Once there, I let him go and watched as he moved to a table, setting down the reference book and sliding in the chair to finish his studying.
With a smile, I hurried back down the stairs, carefully avoiding the sunlight streaming through the large windows; most of my body was protected by the long black duster I wore. I sat back down in the chair we had occupied previously, knowing that in three minutes, my boyfriend would be gone and I would only be able to watch him through his window once or twice while he was sleeping until next Wednesday, when Lucas would be back to study.
