Part 1
-------------------------------
It was the year 1907. Ladies and gentleman alike were wearing elegant garments of clothing, worth hundreds of dollars. The fancy ladies had their hair done just so, with their make-up done just right and their fans waving in front of their faces to attract attention. The men were standing and dancing and talking and laughing with everyone aboard. Everyone was in good company…except for one little girl. She was alone on board, traveling to her home in England to meet her family. No one had asked her to dance, but that was fine with young Emily. She twisted the silver locket around her fingers over and over again, trying to rid herself of the dream that she had had the previous night. Poison, treason, gold, death, ghosts were the main points in it. What did it all mean? What was it supposed to mean anyway? There was a sudden snap and a thick black cord swung through the air, killing all of the adults with one slice of the cord along their necks. Emily’s scream echoed around the ship while the ladies and gentlemen fell to the ground, dead. It seemed like she was the only one aboard now…or so she thought. A hand caught her on the shoulder roughly and spun her around. Emily screamed as the person dragged her away from the dead bodies and onto her room…
----------------------------
“AUGH!!! AHHHH!” I screamed, twisting and writhing in my bed covers. My best friend, Bernie, ran in and saw me and gasped. He ran over to my bed and started to shake my shoulders.
“Madigan! Maddie! Wake up!” he shouted. My eyes snapped open, waking me from the nightmare. I looked up at Bernie, my whole body shaking with fear.
“Bernie? Oh thank goodness!” I gasped, falling into his arms with intense relief. He looked down at me, clearly worried.
“Madigan, are you alright? Was it a bad dream?” he asked. Well no duh. It certainly hadn’t been real…it couldn’t have been real…that poor little girl possibly couldn’t have REALLY gone through that…but why had it effected me so much?
“It was awful…” I said. I began to tell him about the dream and I was pleased to see when he gasped and winced at all the right parts. When I was done, he just stared at me.
“What kind of sick movies have you been watching lately?” he joked, punching my arm lightly. I smiled weakly.
“I know it sounds crazy, but…do you think it actually could have happened? I mean, it felt real…in a way…like it actually happened a long time ago.” I pressed on, letting go of my insecurities and fears to Bernie. He held his hand up, signaling me to stop.
“Madigan, relax. It was just a dream. A silly little dream. Don’t worry about it.” Bernie said firmly. I nodded and tried to push the dream out of my head.
-----------------------------------
“Where are we?” I asked, sitting up and looking out the window to the wide, open sea. There was nothing but clear blue skies and calm water. Bernie took out his compass and looked down at it.
“We’re heading due west and about to come up on the ship that we found back at headquarters.” He said eagerly. I sat up quickly and jumped out of bed, excited.
“You mean the old one?” I exclaimed. He nodded.
“Alright!” I shouted, pumping my fist into the air. Bernie laughed at me.
“You’re such a kid. Hurry up and get dressed. We’re about fifty miles from it and you need a good breakfast to get rid of that dream.” Bernie said. I nodded and shooed him out the door. I took out a black jacket trimmed with brown fur around the collar and a pair of dark blue jeans with some brown, clunky shoes. Perfect for searching an old, forgotten ship. I rushed to the main room where breakfast was being held. Sanchez, one of my shipmates, was telling a joke and everyone else was laughing at him. When I walked in, everyone greeted me with smiles. Bernie however, being the fatherly figure that he is, gave me a plate full of pancakes, bacon, and fish sticks. I sat down at the tiny table next to Gloria, another shipmate.
--------------------------------------
Before I go any father, I should explain who all of my shipmates are and their duties, in order of importance:
Bernie: the main man and captain. He’s the one who started the whole business of finding old, forgotten and broken ships and fixing them up and turning them in. Genius operation.
Me: the co-captain and “daughter” to Bernie. Bernie had been a friend of my parents before they had died. As a last request of theirs, they said that he was my godfather. Then, when they died on an expedition of theirs (fixing a ship like we’re doing now), Bernie took over for my parents and the whole business. I’m the youngest of everyone, being only 18 years old. I’m doing this for my parent’s and it’s my first adventure with everyone. So you can see how excited I could be.
Gus: driver of the boat that we were sailing on.
Gloria: main operator of finding the ships. She’s one bright person, and she knows how to plot and locate ships really well and she can read maps just like a normal person would read a book.
Sanchez: he’s the engineer. He’s a very important person to have with us, because he leads everyone on fixing the ship. He’s a really smart guy with fixing boats and knowing his way around them.
Charlie: I don’t really know much about him, except that he positively begged to come with us.
That’s everyone who’s here on board. Now, on with the story…
---------------------------------------
“So, Bernie tells us that you had a bad dream.” Gloria said to me. I gulped down some of my bacon and nodded while looking at Bernie. He shrugged.
“Sorry. I had to tell them though. You know how we worry about you.” He said. I smiled and Gloria gave me a nuggie. My brown hair snarled and twisted and knotted up and I laughed along with everyone else. Over the intercom came Gus’ voice:
“Bernie, we’re here! Let’s do some ship-fixin’! WOOHOO!” Gus’ feelings of extreme happiness caught on to all of us and we whooped and hollered right along with him, me being the loudest.
“Are you ready everyone?” Bernie asked all of us. We all nodded.
“C’mon Bernie, let’s go already!” I said, and everyone laughed at me. When the boat finally stopped, I was the first one outside on board of our ship, staring up at the beautiful ship. Yeah, so much for beautiful in your point of view. It was old and rusty and broken, so you would think it was ugly. But to me, it was the beginning of a new adventure. So many happy emotions were bouncing through me and I looked over to see Bernie at my side, looking puzzled. Huh. What was his problem?
“Hey Bernie, what is it?” I asked him. He looked down at me, then down at a slightly faded picture.
“Well, it’s the most peculiar thing but…this is an exact description and picture of the ship that your parent’s were fixing when they died.” He said grimly. A chill went through my spine for no apparent reason.
