Chapter 1: The Beginning of All
Joshua smiled contently as he stood in the hall next to Amber, admiring her deep blue eyes as she spoke of her upcoming volleyball match against the next city over’s team. He always had loved them- he could never grow sick of them. He nodded when she asked him if he'd be there at the match to cheer her on, brushing back his soft silver bangs.
Amber smiled softly as he agreed to come, readjusting the strap on her bag. They had been best friends since the fourth grade and she knew him well enough to finish most of his sentences- at least, she thought he did. She had no idea about his secret, or curse as he called it. The curse that made him transform to his angelic form whenever he was sexually aroused. She smiled and ruffled his hair. "Alright, Joshie, we've got to get to homeroom, come on." she spoke in a soft tone, taking her hand out of his hair and placing it back on her bag's strap. She had called him Joshie since for as long as she could remember and because he didn't have a problem being called it, she continued to do so.
"Hey! Jenny, did you see that new boy? Isn't he just a dream?!" Her friend smiled back at her. "Yes, he is! He is so good looking! And tough too! I bet you anything he's going to become the schools most popular boy!" "And pick me as his girlfriend?" "You wish!" The two girls giggled as they continued to chat.
Amber raised a brow as she heard this, a small smirk on her face. "Here that, Joshie? There's a hot new guy!" She looked forward, imagining of what this so-called hottie could possibly look like.
As she daydreamed, Joshua just made a grimace. ‘Great. A new "hot guy" to steal the heart of her,’ He thought to himself, having had a crush on her for the past three years now.
The sound of girls screaming could be heard as a group of females surrounding one male could be seen coming around the corner.
Joshua turned toward the screams, a frown on his face. What could this be?
Amber turned as well. "Oh my- Could that be him coming now?!" she asked more to herself than to Joshua. "Come on Joshie!" She grabbed his hand and ran toward the crowd of females, pushing her way through the crowd until she was face-to-face with the newcomer.
Derek stared calmly at the new girl who had entered his little circle. First day at school and already he had a bunch of females crowding around him. Hmph, made him sick. Pushing some of his shaggy black hair out of his face, he glared at the girl as she blocked his way. "And you are?" He asked in a dark silky tone.
Amber smirked. "Amber. Amber Carrick. And you are?" she asked slowly, not quite remembering why she had ran over here in the first place.
Joshua gave the newcomer a bitter frown, upset that he was stealing 'his girl'. "Come on, Amber. We gotta go to homeroom..." he complained, tugging her gray hoodie’s sleeve.
Derek grabbed her hand and kissed it gently, looking into her eyes the whole time. "It's a pleasure to meet you...Amber." He said, her name rolling off his tongue like fine wine.
Joshua gaped at him, still in shock before he could become angered.
Amber blushed a light pink. "The pleasure is all mine..?" She stopped, not knowing his name.
"The name is Derek...And the pleasure… is all mine." He murmured, still looking into her eyes.
"Derek. Hmmm. I like it..." She smiled, smirking at the madly jealous girl’s around her who were watching.
Joshua, now furious, tugged harder on her hoodie. "Come oooooon, Amber! The bells' gonna ring!"
"Joshie, stop being so rude in front of our new student. Let us give him a warm welcoming..." she murmured, still having her eyes locked to Derek's.
Derek smiled at her. "Since I am new to this school...Would you mind giving me a tour?" He asked her, ignoring the rest of the girls. "Your annoying friend can join us if you want."
"I wouldn't mind at all. Joshie....go to homeroom and tell Mr. Kakashi that I'm giving Derek a tour..." she murmured, not even looking at Joshua as she spoke.
Joshua gaped at her. "But...I....." He looked down, hurt. "I'll go, too....he needs someone to show him where the boys' locker room and restrooms are...." he said rather quickly.
"What? Fine, Joshie." she murmured, still looking into Derek's eyes.
"Yes and do hurry back...We would like to get going as soon as possible." Derek said with a small smirk towards Joshua, the first time he actually looked at the other boy.
"Yeah...hurry up, Joshie..." she murmured.
Joshua bit his lip. "Wait here. I'll be right back..." he turned and ran toward their homeroom, RM. 42. It was just down the hall and around the corner.
As he ran off, Amber turned and saw him turn around the corner and then she turned back to Derek. "Come on, let's go." She said, having had no intentions of waiting up for Joshua.
Derek looked back at Amber, laying in arm over her shoulder, setting a slow walking pace, he began to walk wherever. "So tell me...where first My’ lady?"
"The cafeteria?" she proposed, walking with him and smirking at all of the other girls who glared at her as she walked with him.
Meanwhile, Joshua had just finished explaining to their homeroom teacher that Amber and himself would be giving the new student a tour of the school. He walked out of the classroom, a stressed expression across his face. He turned around the corner, looking down as he walked. As he raised his gaze, he stopped. He stared wide-eyed down the hallway that was now deserted, the bell having run earlier.
Derek nodded, ignoring the looks of lust from the girls and guys that passed by. "Sure babe, wherever."
Amber pushed the door to the cafeteria open. "Well… yeah...you eat in here..." she smiled, gesturing toward the inside of the room.”$2.00 for hot lunch, otherwise bring a lunch from home." She giggled lightly as she let the door close. "Or I could bring you a lunch, if you like?"
Joshua raced down the halls, looking for them, not knowing that they were on the first floor that he had been on just moments before, as he was now on the third floor.
Derek smirked gently at Amber. "Say I got a question about that friend of yours...Is he always that annoying?"
"Oh, Joshie? Yeah....he confessed his love for me last year, but I turned him down. We're just friends..." she murmured.
Yes, Joshua had in fact confessed his love to Amber the year before, but had had his heart broken. He groaned and stopped running, walking over to the water fountain and getting a drink. He looked at his reflection in the water at the bottom of the basin. He hadn't realized that his eyes were watery. He leaned his back against the wall, sliding down to sit on the ground, his head leaning on the side of the fountain. He put his hands on his forehead as a tear fell down his cheek, his stomach in knots. He loved her, with all of his heart. And here was some new guy who was taking her from him. He had agreed to stay friends with her after being rejected as he would not be able to live without at least the love she gave him as his best friend. He had been rejected by his mother and father. His father having left his mother after hearing that she was pregnant and being left on his god father's doorstep at the age of two. His god father was an elderly kind man, but old. He had passed away when Joshua was thirteen, leaving Joshua without any family to support him. He lived on his own in a small apartment, having a job to pay rent and for tuition.
Derek looked at the girl in shock, though his face didn't show any emotion. "You rejected him? Why?"
"I love him to death as a friend, but I mean...he's got no hope for the future. He lives on his own and can barely afford to pay rent and tuition money. I can't be obligated to help support him pay for that- my family doesn't have that much money either..." she murmured, not looking up from the ground.
"So you’re just looking for someone who has money who can buy you things?" He asked, his eyes narrowing.
She looked up. "I... no. I just...he has barely enough to support himself. What happens if I fall in love with him and something happens to him, like he gets evicted or something? I can't be involved in that. Do you understand what I mean?" she asked, fearing now that he was angry with her.
He looked up in thought. "Hmph...I see. I get your point." He said calmly. “Say, why don't you go get something for us to eat? Here's a few dollars." He said, handing her a five dollar bill.
She nodded, heading back into the cafeteria.
Joshua sighed, using the back of his right hand to wipe his tears off of his cheeks. He looked out the tall window that was across the hall, his eyes very shiny from tears. He sighed and closed his eyes lightly, putting his head on his bent left knee, his other leg stretched out.
As Derek wandered the halls having escaped from the cafeteria, he walked throughout the entire school, loving the emptiness of the hallways. Much better to travel in. His eyes caught the silver haired lad that was traveling with the female he had just escaped from. Walking over to him, he kicked the bottom of his shoe. "Hey."
Joshua lifted his head slowly, looking up, his face red and a bit sweaty from having cried. He wiped his eyes quickly with the back of his hands. "What do you want?" he asked in a lower, sadder tone than his normal voice.
Derek tilted his head to the side as he stood in front of the guy on the floor. "I want to know why your on the side crying like a baby." He replied, hands going into his pockets.
Joshua narrowed his eyes. "I wasn't crying. Just...leave me alone..." he said this last bit in a faint, hoarse whisper, not looking directly into Derek's eyes.
Derek crouched so that he was at eye level with the other boy. "Hey, come with me. I know the perfect thing to cheer you up. Come on..."
Joshua looked at him, arching an eyebrow. "Give me one good reason why I'd wanna hang out with you of all people." he said bitterly.
"Because I want you to. Now come on." He said lightly, a hand coming out, offering to the younger boy.
He stared at the hand for a moment and then stood up on his own without taking his hand. "Where are we going?" he asked rudely.
Meanwhile Amber was ordering lunch.
Standing up, he began walking off. "Somewhere. And if you don't want to come with me, I can always get that girl of yours, Amber, to take out."
Joshua bit his lip and grimaced as he followed Derek down the hall without a word. "This better be worth it..." he muttered under his breath as he caught up with him.
