In A Perfect World
::::::The story below is based on (some...... ok, very few!) actual events, names have been changed to protect the innocent.
er, ah, yea, and the not-so innocent too:::::
Please review as I'd like to know how I'm doing. The lemon/lime chapter is upcoming (no pun intended!) but might take a bit as I'm trying to make it so it can stand alone.
She drove on absent mindedly, not paying attention to the road or to where she was going. There was so much to do before the antique exhibition started and there just wasn’t enough time. She pulled into the driveway, parked the car and went into the house. As she headed for the bedroom to change into her shorts, she caught a look at herself in the hall mirror. It had been a year since she determined that at twenty seven, two hundred plus pounds was just too much to weigh. She turned and inspected her work. A now svelte one fifteen with 36 24 35 measurements wasn't bad at all. She popped into the bedroom and changed into her running shorts, it was time for her daily run, and she needed the time alone to think.
The show was due to start the next Friday. This was Saturday, and the out of state help for the antique half of the grounds would be pulling in sometime today. She tried to push the thought of the tall dark haired man with the Adonis body out of her mind. It had been a mistake last year, even though it was he that had made her decide to take better care of herself, she knew better than to even try to carry on a work place relationship.
There was still no reason in her mind for why she had seduced the dark haired man. It was merely a physical attraction. He was good looking, but he knew it, and seemed to take great pleasure in driving all women crazy. She had made it clear to him that wearing that pair of shorts was not fair, and if he expected her to keep her composure in his presence he should definitely not wear them. And even though he'd made it clear there was no chance for another rendezvous, on his last day he seemed to enjoy parading around in the shorts, as if to say "see what you can't have", but she retained her demeanor and no one was ever the wiser.
She ran on and completed her mile in a time that was a personal best. The cool shower water felt good on her body, she was hot and sweaty from her run but it felt good none the less. As she turned off the water she heard a knock at the door. She threw on her sweat pants and a tank top to answer it.
Standing at the door was David, apparently the guys from out of state had come in, and she hadn't heard the tell tale blasting of air horns that announced their arrival, over the shower noise.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I was looking for Kerry, I was told she'd be up here at the house."
Now, as Kerry stood before him, she thought to herself "I can't have changed so much that David doesn't recognize me, can I?" She decided to see how far the mistake could last before David realized that she was Kerry.
"I'm sorry; Kerry had to go out of town. There was a death. I'm not sure when she'll be back. I'm Cassie, her sister, I've been staying with her for the past week, or so, she said it'd be ok if I stuck around. Would you like to come in?" Kerry held the door for him as he entered the house.
"Well, yes, I can see the resemblance now, you two could pass for twins! I'm David, me and the guys just got in from up north, we're here to help with the exhibition. Kerry never said anything about having a sister." Kerry could see that David was completely honest in his acceptance of her. "Why no, there's no reason for you to not stay here, it's her house. You say she don't know when she'll be back, hmmmm that's a problem. We've got this big show coming up and I just know the RV park'll be filled to capacity."
"Well” Kerry began, "like I said I've been here about a week, helping Kerry out with the daily stuff, maybe with a crash course I could lend a hand."
David gave this a thought for a moment, and nodded his head "Why sure, Kerry was a quick study when she started, I'm sure any sister of hers could handle a crash course. Let's head down to the house, I'll introduce you to everybody, and we'll see who can give you the best instructions for running this place."
"O.K.” Kerry said, "But just give me a minute to do something with my hair and throw on some decent clothes."
Kerry stood in the bathroom, her hair a tangled mess about her shoulders, her stomach in knots. The local regulars knew perfectly well who she was, and if any of them were to see her, the jig would be up. As she fought to get a comb through her hair she called out to David, “I’m not sure if the management knows I'm here, does it matter?"
"I really don't think so, the owner of this place is my cousin, and if I say it’s ok he won't question me." David answered.
"Well just the same, I won't have to deal with them will I? I don't think the manager likes me very much." Kerry was still afraid that if any of the regular people saw her that would be the end of her little charade.
"No" David called back, "I don't think so, this place pretty much takes care of itself, once we get you through that crash course you should be all set to run the place."
"That's good to hear" Kerry stepped out of the bedroom wearing a matching shorts set that nicely set off her figure, her long red hair was pulled back in a braid that reached to her butt, "like I said I don't think the regular guy likes me too much."
David's voice betrayed the calm look on his face, Kerry knew she had just knocked his socks off, the oversized comfort of the sweat pants and tank had hid her figure, now he tried to remain cool and collected.
"Nice outfit!" he finally managed to blurt out.
"Oh, this old thing" Kerry shot back coyly, "why I just throw this on when there's nothing left in the closet."
David's thoughts escaped his lips before his brain realized what he was saying, "Oh I'm sure you'd look good in nothing at all!" At that split second he realized what he had said and his face lost all color. Kerry just laughed and motioned him to the door.
The ride down to the lower levels of the property was short. The only transportation that was really needed for these types of excursions was a golf cart or a four wheeled ATV. David drove the cart like it was a second car, pulling up neatly in front of the modular home where everyone was crashed after their long journey.
Kerry tried to ignore the butterflies in her stomach as she stepped out of the cart and allowed David to hold the door for her.
"Everybody!" David began, "I want you to meet Cassie, she's Kerry's sister. It seems that Kerry had a death and went for the funeral. Cassie let me introduce you around."
But Kerry was feeling mischievous, "No, let me guess, Kerry has told me so much about all of you, I bet I get you all right the first time."
"O.K., you're on!" David accepted the challenge, and folding his arms across his chest, seated himself on the end of the picnic bench.
It seemed as if the whole crew had come down for the show, there was about ten of them in all sorts of positions lying around on the porch. Kerry started with whom she thought would be the easiest to describe to someone else.
"You must be J.T.!" she said pointing to a tall but skinny guy with a beer in his hand already, "and you're Matt" motioning to another with an obvious balding problem. "You're Sonny, and you're Stevie-boy, you must be Bill and you're Kurt!"
With perfect precision, she picked them all out, feigning that she was thinking hard of what "her sister" had told her of them.
Just then David called out that she wasn't done; there was one more person she would have to identify. Kerry turned around to face the direction that she heard David's voice coming from, and standing there beside him, like he just walked out of a dream, was the tall, dark haired man she had tried so hard to get out of her mind just that morning.
