The Lost Goddess
Prologue
Mount Olympus
Present
A tall, dark-haired young woman looked around in confusion as she walked through a temple on the outskirts of Olympus, the home of the gods. The temple was covered in several layers of dust, dirt, and grime. It had obviously been abandoned years ago.
Yet, the filth of the place could not hide its beauty.
All the other temples on Olympus were stark white and filled with the humans’ offerings. They were displayed as if it were a contest between them, to see who had the better worshipers. This temple, however, was… comfortable. The walls were a deep honey brown and there were couches and chairs scattered randomly throughout.
“Aphro-”
A hand slapped across her mouth. She looked up into the ocean blue eyes of her mother-in-law, Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love and Beauty.
“Are you trying to get us in trouble, Psyche?” the blonde goddess hissed as she let the other woman go.
“Why would we get in trouble?” Psyche whispered.
Aphrodite rolled her eyes, “Because we’re not supposed to be here. It’s forbidden for anyone, even Zeus, to come in here.”
“Why?”
“Stop acting like a child! You are Psyche, Wife of Eros, Goddess of Soulmates! Start acting like it!”
Psyche lowered her eyes and felt tears building behind her eyelids. Aphrodite sighed, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have gotten angry. It’s this place, and the memories that go with it,” she put her hands on her daughter-in-law’s shoulders and turned her around, so she was facing a doorway, “Go through that doorway to the very back of the room.”
Psyche swallowed, nodded, and began walking.
The room was huge. Just like the hall it was filthy, but beautiful. She walked past couches, tables, and bookshelves. There was not a piece of gold or a jewel in sight. Whoever’s temple this had been, they either took their treasures with them, or didn’t care about riches.
At the very back of the room, the throne room, Psyche’s mind told her, was a stone slab. On that slab laid a woman, asleep. She was beautiful. Tall, like all the gods, she had black hair that most likely fell nearly to her ankles when she stood. She had the golden brown complexion that most of the gods had, and was wearing a white dress. Unlike the rest of the temple, there was no dirt, or dust on her, or on five feet on all sides of her.
Psyche felt someone come up behind her. She turned to see Aphrodite looking at the woman on the slab. She had tears in her eyes.
“Aphrodite?”
The Goddess of Love looked up and blinked. Then, she moved over to the closest couch. With a wave of her hand the dust and dirt disappeared. She sat down and motioned to Psyche to join her.
Once they were both seated Psyche asked, “Who is she?”
“My sister, Arianna. She was the Atlantean goddess of Fate and Destiny.”
“How did she end up here?”
Aphrodite sighed, “It’s a long story, but basically, she was tricked by Hera, who hates her. And it was all my fault.”
Aphrodite bowed her head to hide the silent tears rolling down her face. Her shaking shoulders were the only sign of her crying. Psyche wrapped her arms around the older woman and soothed her, whispering softly in her ear.
After several minutes Psyche looked up and her green eyes widened in shock, “Aph-Aphrodite,” she whispered, “She’s gone.”
Aphrodite’s head shot up, “What?”
She looked at the slab her sister had laid on for over two thousand years. It was true, she wasn’t there anymore. It looked as if she had never been their to begin with.
A smile broke out on Aphrodite’s face; she spun around, grabbed Psyche’s hands, and started to dance around, laughing all the while.
“It’s started! It’s started!”
Suddenly, she stopped. She turned and began dragging the younger goddess behind her as she ran out of the temple, “Come on! We have to go tell everyone!”
“Tell them what?” Psyche asked, breathlessly.
Aphrodite stopped and turned to face the other woman, “That she’s woken up.”
