Prologue

Note: My characters, Kevin and Nick are owned exclusively by DreamStealer1031. Please do not copy or use them without my explicit permission in any other works. Then again, since one of the characters is me, I would be flattered if you would.

Thanks to myself for this one, all the ideas came from a dream…

I would greatly appreciate reviews, though I would prefer if they weren\'t useless flames and such. This being my first fic, I don\'t have any high expectations for it yet.

The main characters in this story are in their senior year of high school. As of now, the R rating will stand; as the story progresses, the rating may change.

“Deal With It”

No one thought anything of it at first; no one connected the dots. An accident near the power plant, only reported the day after, there were no injuries or deaths. No one thought anything of it, at all…

Ugh, what a shitty morning. It was only a week since we moved here, and now it’s the first day of school. My parents never told me exactly why we moved, not that I didn’t ask though. It’s more like they were hell-bent against telling me.

*********************

It was only one day when the arguments got really bad, and the next thing I knew, my parents were looking in my direction with an astonished face. I thought they were just being weird, so out of exasperation, I got up and motioned to leave. They were still staring at the same spot though.

“Hey, what’s up with you guys?”

Instead of answering, they just shot their heads in my direction.

Nervously, my mom said, “It’s happening… Kevin, if you’re there, go upstairs and start packing, we’re moving.”

I started waving in front of their faces, but they didn’t react.

“Am I invisible or something? What happened?”

She looked a little hysterical, like she didn’t know exactly what to do.

“I’m sorry, I can’t tell you yet, you’ll have to take our word for it, please, just cooperate with us.”

“NO! Not until you tell me what’s going on? Why can’t you see me?”

After a few moments of silence, she sighed, and gave in.

“Do you remember the accident in the power plant that closed down a month ago?”

“Ya, but there weren’t any reported injuries or deaths or anything, what does that have to do with me? I wasn’t even out that night! What, were the press lying, am I mutating or something? You have to tell me!”

“They don’t know anything yet, they just gave all the parents instructions –“

“What? Who’s ‘they’?”

“The government, they want to keep the situation under control, even if they can’t keep the word down. They don’t know how it happened, they don’t know why, or who. They call you a Shadow, because you can step in an out of reality, without losing touch with it. They never explained how, but they assured us that you aren’t in any danger, you aren’t sick. Now please, pack your bags, we’re moving. “

Judging by their relieved faces, they could see me again. Confused and exasperated, I went upstairs.

*********************

After that day, I spent many hours with some of the friends I knew I’d have to leave soon, to try and figure out everything about this new discovery. Since I couldn’t tell if I was invisible on my own, with their help, I discovered that I could disappear at will, if I thought about it hard enough.

I took advantage of every day I had left, but they started to take advantage of me. Pranks, stealing, after a few days I realized that they only cared for me enough for what I could do. The Saturday we moved, I changed my mind, deciding to only use my gift when absolutely necessary, so at least any new friends I might make could actually be genuine.

Sorry this was so short, the next chapter will be much longer, I just needed a starting point.
