Silent Intent.

I step into the shower and let the water run over my body, washing away the mud and blood and the stench of sweat. My heart aches and so does my body. I wonder ‘how did it come to this?’

When I was two years old, my father died. My mum was every thing to me, all I had, we had no other family. So it was just me and mum, in the country, alone. When I was five all that changed. She died from liver failure so I was sent to an orphanage in the north. I don’t remember crying just my world falling apart. Yanea a slim Elven lady in a black suit came to stay with me, the family friend arranged the funeral. He assured me every thing would be ok; I wonder if he ever knew how wrong he was.
After the funeral me and Yanea took the train, I wont name the place for even now I fear it. My things were confiscated the moment I arrived. The building they had brought me too was a large mansion of a sort; it was nothing like my mothers humble tree cottage at the edge of a village. The mansion was large and there were several sub level with tunnels branching off.
My room was little more than a windowless box room, a single bed, a dressing table and a cupboard and a bathroom attached, the walls were a cold grey stone. I ate alone in my room that night and Yanea came and got me changed into my night dress. They called lights out and a turned them off. My five year old self was engulfed by fear. The sound of a door opening and closing and a flash of a torch blinded me for a few seconds. I felt my bed shift with the slight weight of another person. I couldn’t even scream I was so afraid.
“Hi” came a soft voice and the light of the torch moved illuminating the strangers pale face and big green eyes. “I’m Jimonbell”
“Hi” I just about managed to squeak out the words. “I’m Kadoria”

From that moment on Jimonbell was every thing to me. In the morning she’d sneak back into her own room and change into the uniform we were provided with. Our Uniform was plain black shirt and jumper with a red and black tie, a black pleated skirt, long black knee high socks and plain shoes for the girls the boys wore the same black shirts and jumpers and black and red tie with trousers. Jimonbell was a year and a half older than me.
The first thing I learnt about this school was playtime was a thing of the past but at the age of five you never truly understand these things.
From that day forward the routine that was set before me by the authorities of our schools I would be forced to keep for the next fifteen years.
Every morning for the next fifteen years my life would go as follows. Five AM wakeup call, breakfast at five thirty, morning prayers at six, kung fu at six thirty until eight. Then various classes until one PM. we had an hours lunch and a break but in older years these we used for practice and bullying those who weren’t strong enough. After lunch more classed until five PM At Five PM we’d have to be out side or in the large main hall learning archery. There were only twenty Elflings in my class all the same age as myself. Jimonbell wasn’t one of them; she was in the class above me. Every day our teachers, who we’d refer to as Sir or Madame, would tell us how were we’re special, specially chosen, how we were unique and they were trying to help us achieve our best. Each class of twenty was taught to work as a team and tight bonds of friendships were formed. We had to rely on each other because the Sir’s and Madame’s punishments were brutal. The beatings locked in solitude in the deep dungeons under the main part of the school. The separate classes usually stayed away from each other. Me and Jimonbell never spoke to each other until after lights out. We were told we could only trust those in our class but I trusted Jimonbell. Every night she’d sneak into my bed and we’d sleep in the safety of each others arms.
When I was thirteen I was sat with my class mates. I won’t bore you with descriptions. If I did you’d be jumping at every person who bares a resemblance thinking to yourself ‘is that her? Is that him?’ but I’ll tell you the names. In my class the eight girls’ names are, Jasedell, Rainroe, Brigadle, Ffion, Blythe, Blaise and Amelia. The boys’ names are Branog, Kale, Alaine, Brettave, Donatte, Matthew, Aarion, Luken, Henry, Jackyl, Shay and James.
This day we were sat in the court yard watching Matt and Blaise practice some new move with some sai that Blaise had been struggling with, when I saw some thing that froze me very blood. Jimonbell thrown to the floor, her class had turned against her. I stood and Jasedell looked at me.
“It’s none of our business K. Leave it be” she asked. I looked at her but started to walk away.
“Nineteen on ones hardly fair you guys either have my back or you don’t” I said striding toward Jimonbell who couldn’t even get to her feet before the next stoke fell.
“We got your back” James said taking his place at my side. I think you could call me and James joint leaders of the class appointed by our other team mates, the vote had been split but we worked so well together neither of us complained. I clicked my neck and Jimonbell fell at my feet. I grabbed her arm and pulled her to her feet.
“Stay out of this dragons this isn’t none of your concern” the leader hissed.
“I’m making it our concern” I hissed, I could see my reflection in the window, my pale face completely calm my blood red lips in a small smirk my green eyes focused. He made a grab for Jimonbell’s hair and I pushed my friend behind me and James grabbed his wrist.
“What did she do to deserve such a beating?” he asked pushing the man back. “She’s a member of your team, your family”
“She failed us” he said spitting in his fury. “She slowed us down on out test and lost us marks. We were told to punish her how we see fit.”
He nodded to the window to where Sir Hazleton was stood I marched over pulling a weakened Jimonbell behind me.
“Sir I refuse to stand by and allow this to happen.” I said keeping my voice low and respectful when all I wanted to do was pull the tanto from my boot and plant it in his head.
“It’s out of my hands” He said smirking.
“But it’s not out of yours Kadoria” I turned and saw my favourite teacher Sir Dagon stride forward. “If your team feels that she’s being treated unfairly fight them for the right to keep her as your permanent member but be warn she has never been liked in that class and has never been very good in classes”
“I’ll have to discuss it with James” I said but in my mind I knew what I wanted. I took off my jumper and tie and called my team to a hustle leaving Elli in my line of sight holding my jumper.
I wasn’t met with much resistance. They knew how stubborn I was but also they didn’t like the way that Jimonbell was treated. Our team of Dragons would never dream of treating a team member in such a way. Our decision was made. Me and James approached the leader. “At sundown we all meet in battle Dragons against Phoenix in the main arena, If you win, you get to keep her and do as you will if we win, we get to keep her for eternity and you will be one man down.”
“Gordon they have twelve and we only have eleven now” some one behind him whispered. He turned his head and smirked.
“They’re also a year younger, we have a year more training and experience over them” Gordon scoffed.
”We’ll see you at sun down then?” I said putting my sweetest smile on. He nodded and bowed his head strutting away.
“I hope you’re sure about this Kadoria” James said at my side. “is the risk of getting our ass kicked worth it for a stranger”
I smiled and James who’d always been good at seeing through my lies stopped and studied me.
“You know her don’t you?” he asked narrowing his beautiful brown eyes.
“Yes I’ve shared a bathroom with her for the past eight years.” I admitted. I trusted him and that trust was well placed. We went to the Dragon common room Jimonbell in tow. Luken and Amelia bandaged Jimonbell up. Healing was always my worst subject. I spoke to the team and explained mine and Jimonbell’s friendship the half heartedness they had felt about fighting for her melted. They trusted my judgment and Jimonbell was accepted. If we won this battle she would become a dragon. It was foolish to trust each other so, we were so young but I would not change it if I could. They were my family, they were my friends and they were as good as my blood. There wasn’t any thing I wouldn’t do for them. Nothing.
