Madison the College Student

MADISON THE COLLEGE STUDENT

Madison was, in many ways, the average college student. She was poor-that was evidenced enough, with her poking around a yard sale crammed with items better suited for the fires of hell than any livable apartment… which would make them perfect for hers, then. She was young, in her very first living-on-her-own accommodations, complete with cockroaches, loud drunken neighbors, and mysterious stains on the walls that wouldn’t go away no matter how much cleaner she applied. She twittered around the crowded tables like an anxious swallow, trying to peer over people’s shoulders-because Madison was also strikingly short. At an even 5’, most people pronounced her size “cute” and then teased her about whether they could hang their jackets on her.

Madison wasn’t fond of those people.

She would have been beautiful, too. Perhaps at a time she had been. But she was also the eternal academic, burying her nose in dusty books and staying shut up inside dark library hours for hours in the night. The effect was obvious; her dark ebony curls were limp and hang around her face like a dirty dish rag. She never bothered with contacts, and wore glasses that must have been manufactured to serve as binoculars; which was too bad… because beneath the ten-inch thick glass were the most beautiful chocolate eyes in the world. They seemed to melt in the bright sunlight, and if not for her downward glance, one could easily feel naked under her gaze. But looking deep into her mesmerizing eyes… you wouldn’t even notice you didn’t have a stitch of clothing on. But her skin was unnaturally pale, her clothing hung on her like it had been poorly arranged on a hanger, and she slumped her shoulders, sheltering herself from the world.

Madison was, in many ways, an average college student. But on this day… on this day, that changed.
