Chapter One
“Jesus Christ.” Anya Rosario woke abruptly to bright light pouring through her sheer yellow curtains. The clock on her nightstand was reading 1:48 pm, in bright red letters. “It’s gotta be bad luck to start the new year with a hang over.”
“Shh.” A deep, male, voice came from the other side of the bed.
Anya rolled over to find the source of the voice. Sprawled out next to her, shirtless, and apparently sporting a matching hangover was her best friend Adrian Giovanni. Anya remembered Adrian helping her into a cab in the wee hours of the morning and then getting her into her pajamas but she didn’t really remember him getting into bed with her. She laughed a little to herself, she should have known he would be too drunk to make the trip back to his apartment.
“Dre, it’s almost two in the afternoon. I think we have to get out of bed.” Anya told him even though she had no real desire to do so.
“No.” He pulled her paisley comforter back over his head and rolled onto his side, resting his head comfortably on her stomach.
Anya ran her hands through his hair, letting her fingers get caught up in his soft shag of black curls, massaging his scalp. “I’ll make you coffee and maybe even pancakes if you get up.”
“No.” He mumbled again, snuggling closer to her. “More sleep.”
“You’re hopeless.” Anya gently pried his arm from around her. “You sleep. I need an aspirin... or two.” Spotting his hoodie on the floor by the bed, Anya pulled it on over her pajamas and quickly, or as quickly as she could with a pounding head ache, exited the bedroom.

“So, she lives.” Anya’s roommate Kendra was sitting at their kitchen counter drinking a mug full of black coffee. At twenty-two years of age the girls had been friends for over ten years.
“Barely.” Anya laughed. “I drank way too much last night. How are you feeling?”
“I’ll be okay after another cup of coffee.” Kendra yawned. Although it was unlikely that she had just woken up, Kendra was still wearing her pajamas as well. “That was the best party we’ve been to in a while.”
“That’s an understatement. Adrian is still passed out in my bed, I doubt he gets up before dinner.” Anya poured herself a mug of coffee and started adding sugar to it.
“You two were hilarious.” Kendra pulled her long brown hair up into a ponytail and stretched. “Table dancing and singing power ballads from the 80s.”
“Hey, I thought our routine was great. We could totally take our act on the road.” Anya leaned against the counter for a moment. “Maybe even American Idol.”
“Oh definitely. You should quit working at the magazine and Adrian can quit his band. Oh, and I could sew you matching velour jump suits.”
“Velour? I think I look best in polyester.” Adrian shuffled into the kitchen. His boxers were hanging low on his hips as he stretched. Both girls stopped their banter to admire the view. Adrian regarded Anya warily. “You’re always stealing my sweatshirts.”
“Adrian, I can say this because I’m your friend.” Kendra said sitting up straight and taking a serious tone. “And because I’m a lesbian. Naked is the best look for you.”
“Thanks Kendra, I’ll keep that in mind.” Adrian blushed lightly but did nothing to cover his near nudity.
“Just spreading some daily wisdom.” Kendra laughed.
Anya shook her head. Having known Kendra since they were in middle school, she was used to the other girl’s wild comments. “And where would we be without that wisdom? ”
“Lost.” Adrian responded, taking a seat next to Kendra at the counter. “So, what’s with the pancakes? I got out of bed for pancakes.”
“I’ll get on that. Right after I get that aspirin.”
“Shh.” A deep, male, voice came from the other side of the bed.
