Author\'s Note
(the title, Kodane no Kairikiranshin, means \"Children of the Spirits(or demons if you prefer)\" in Japanese. It comes into play later on.
This story is written in the style of one of my favorite books, Thief\'s Gamble. Most of the story is written in first person view, but all chapters directly related to the main character are written in first person. This makes it easier, many times, to understand the importance of a characters actions, and also to follow with what\'s happening to whom. This a completely original story so I would appreciate it if no one took any characters or any part of the plot. I\'m trying to get as much feed back from this, and any story I write, because I am currently writing writing a book of short stories, poems, and art work called \"Judged.\" I hope you enjoy the story, and review! Oh, and any translations that I feel need to be addressed will be at the bottom of each chapter as well as the meaning of important names. (the name of a main character usually has relevance to the story.)
Kodane no Kairikiranshin
Prologue
I\'ve finally begun to live my life. Dreams are my only reminder of the battle that took place over control of the child\'s soul. I believe my brother is dead for I no longer have the ability to use my my powers. Perhaps it was all a horrible nightmare like everyone says?I can\'t allow myself to believe that...
Chapter one
Remember Me...
\"Priestess, can\'t they just leave us alone and forget about it?\" a young acolyte asked Kei as they passed a crowd of snarling men and women. \"They\'re so mean.\" she looked down at her sandaled feet.
\"I know Kioko, we won\'t be here long.\" The priestess\' voice was confidant but her face betrayed her. \"Just stay by me.\"
The two traveled on and tried to ignore the insults and yelling from the crowd. A man, silent as death, began to follow close behind them. His face was covered and shadows seemed to envelope his as though he was their child. His boot clad feet made no noise as he tread upon the cobbles of the path. His sharp eyes surveyed the horizon looking for the storm he knew would come.
This was his time. He would lead the armies of Nisha in battle against this damned woman. He would win the favor of his goddess and nothing was going to stop him. This woman\'s death meant the end of everything he hated! Time would finally end, and he would sleep for an eternity.
His life had been a living hell since last they met and he hated her for it. When he had fought his sister before, his goddess had punished him severely. He was cursed to walk the earth for as long as the sun still shone. At first he thought it was a blessing. Now he understood what it meant to be immortal, forced to live for eons and never know the release of death. Finally he could change that. This priestess\' soul would be the lure he needed.
The man shook himself out of his thoughts and realized his prey was farther ahead. He gathered the shadows about him like a cloak and slid quickly behind the young acolyte and listened to the priestess pray over a crumbling grave. A pang of envy for the struck him suddenly.
\"Alright Kioko. Let\'s get back to the shrine...\" Kei bowed her head in final farewell to her ancestor and made her way back down the path, preparing herself for the comments of the crowd.
Now was his chance.
The wind suddenly Strengthened and darkness fell over the grave site in which they stood. Reiko screamed as hands grasped her ankles. krisa\'s eyes widened in fear and surprise. They air smelled like charred flesh and cinnamon.
\"Aiden, I know you\'re there! Let this child go or I swear to the gods you will die!\" A strange and terrible laughter erupted at her words and Krisa recoiled at the sound.
\"I wish you could do me the service, bitch, but I\'m afraid that our last meeting made sure I could not! I\'ve been wandering this gods forsaken earth for eons and I wish that someone would release me!\" Aiden\'s words were like fire.
Kei drew a sword hidden beneath her robes and prepared to fight, but she never had a chance. She was dead before she hit the ground and her lifeless eyes shone as her soul was released with a soft hiss.
Kioko fell to the groud as the hands around her ankles loosed their grip. She couldn\'t understand why this man had killed the priestess, but she wasn\'t about to wait and find out. The now visable Aiden let the acolyte go for she was not his goal anyway, he was after the priestess\' soul.
He slowly walked forward, muttering the biding spell as he walked. He\'d done it. He could finally lie down and sleep away eternity. There was no way Nisha could find fault with him now. He bagan to laugh as the realization sank in. He was free.
. . .
I awoke with a feeling dread. Something terrible had happened in the night and I could feel it on the air like electricty. My heart sank further as I made my way down the stairs that led to my master\'s qourters. It seemed like every lord in this province sat in that room and each face looked up as I walked in.
\"Girl! Get in here!\" My master\'s voice was raught with its usual rage, but something about his told me all I needed to know. The mistress was dead. She had been ill for sveral weeks now and I was surprised she lasted as long as she did.
With so many people there I wasn\'t sure how I would be treated. I was normally beaten when the master was in a bad mood.
\"Ashlyn, get thee to Nadied and fetch my daughter! Tell her of her mother\'s demise and bring her here. You are not to go anywhere else and if you so much as look at anyone of any importance, by the gods, I\'ll kill you.\" His voice was low and and I knew he meant what he said. I was given 11 silver peices and sent on my way.
Nadied is a four day journey by horse and then half a days walk to the school where master\'s daughter, Leiko, was studying. Time passed slowly this time of year because it was never brighter than twighlite. I had been on the path for only a day when I saw out of the corner of my eye a man in black attacking a young girl and priestess. The shadows were gathered about him like some groteque coat. His face was covered, but I knew who it was...
I calmly got off my horse and loosened my sword but left it sheathed. There was no reson to hurry. The man in black gathered the dead preistess\' soul and walked away laughing. He stopped short when he saw me.
\"Ah! My dear Ashlyn! It\'s so good to see you again! Now, if you\'d excuse me I must be going.\"
\"You know I can\'t let you go, Aiden. I will stop you.\" Slowly I drew my sword, ready to fight at last.
\"Of course not... sister!\" He said the word like it hurt. \"I wouldn\'t expect any less from you!\"
\"I could have sworn I killed you last time... I guess hell was afraid you\'d take over?\" Aiden flinched, and I knew I\'d hit his spot.
\"I\'m glad you remember me... Let\'s end this now!\"

Whew! That was fun! so, the first chapter is done... Please review! I may end up making this longer by the time it gets to my book, but that doesn\'t really matter right now... The next chapter will be up soon, as well as an explaination of places, people, history, etc.... Oh! I guess you\'d like to know the names mean now, right? Here you go...
Nisha {nEE-sha}(the evil goddess person) is Hindi for \"night\" (I just love that language. I should learn it...)
Kei {kAY}(the priestess person) is Japanese for \"reverant\" (I love that language too, but I already know some of it...)
Kioko {ki-O-ko}(the young acolyte) is also Japanese for \"happy child\"
Leiko {lAY-ee-ko}[(the master\'s daughter)(such a lovely name)] is, again, japanese for \"arrogant\"
Ashlyn {Ash-lin}(the main character\'s name) is Irish for vision or dream (HINT HINT!)
and, finally, Aiden {I-den}(the main supporting character/the main character\'s brother) is Irish for \"fiery\" (because he was basically kicked out of hell...sort of...)
