That which kills immortals
It was a cool morning. The sun was just making its way over the mountains and the alarm clock on the nightstand at the side of the bed had not rung yet. As the sun crept through the curtains of the closed window its light illuminated the dark room.
Ryu’s eyes slowly opened to the light that was hitting them. His blue orbs sparkled brilliantly in the rays. He slowly turned over, causing blond locks to fall over his half lidded eyes, and marveled at the small man sleeping next to him. His petite lover was absolutely gorgeous asleep. Ryu, careful not to wake him yet, reached a hand up to Zaine’s face and gently caressed the small man’s cheek. He had the softest skin and he always smelt of fruit. Though the appearance of an angel, he was annoying as hell, which is why Ryu always took such pleasure in watching him sleep. It was the only time of the day that there was serenity in the house.
Even though he was a baka, Zaine made Ryu’s world complete. He was the only thing that Ryu had left. Ten years ago his parents had died in a fire and all memories had been lost. But for some reason an image of this boy had remained. It was through luck that the two had met during a failed exorcism. Zaine, who had been a monk back then, was exorcising a spirit and lost all control of the situation. Ryu, who was told by something powerful inside his heart, saved the boy. After that it took some time for the two sorcerers to stop fighting and become lovers. It seemed like the two had always been together, when in all reality it had only been half a year.
As Ryu stared at the sleeping boy, he was filled with happiness and allowed a smile to pull at his lips. To him, it was hard to believe that Zaine was the second most powerful sorcerer. Second only to him, of course. He was such a small man, more like a woman, and had the most innocent face he had ever seen. His aqua green hair was soft and scented with cherry blossoms. His orchid eyes were also innocent and burned with devotion and ignorance. Zaine was the kind of person that never gave up and always tried his best. In fact it was the only reason that Ryu had become his lover. The damn brat had tried to get closer and closer to him every day no matter how many times Ryu had pushed him away.
After he finally allowed Zaine into his heart they became the second most popular couple in Japan, Empress Tsunami and Emperor Kyusai being the first. They couldn’t go anywhere without being stalked by girls. It was understandable seeing as Ryu and Zaine were both absolutely gorgeous.
Ryu slowly stood up and put on a pair of black jeans over his black silk boxers. He then put on his socks and walked out of the room and to the kitchen downstairs.
It was noon when Zaine finally woke up. His arms stretched out over the bed searching for the missing warmth of his partner. He threw the silver sheet off of his body and sat up on the edge of the bed, letting his green tank top slide down over his stomach. He stood from where he was sitting and stretched out. He yawned and headed out towards the kitchen.
“Ryuuuuu!” Zaine’s voice came from the hall and broke the silence of the house.
Ryu, who had been sitting on the floor cleaning his sword, watched in horror as his lover literally bounced off the walls and jumped onto his lap. Ryu sat there trying to breathe as Zaine’s arms embraced his chest and squeezed the air out of his lungs. He allowed the hug to last a moment before needing air. “You realize that you’re going to be the death of me,” said the blonde sorcerer as he pried the death grip of the small man from his body.
“Don’t say that, Ryu!” Zaine looked up at the older man with watery eyes. He would never kill Ryu. If not for him saving his life again and again he would already be in the grave. Aside from that, Zaine didn’t have any family and without Ryu life just didn’t seem livable. They were both the same—neither one had any one else in life.
“Zaine?” Ryu looked at Zaine who was oblivious to everything around him except the warmth of Ryu’s body against his. “How long are you planning on sitting on me?” Zaine turned a bright red and wiggled off of the older man.
“So, what are we going to do today?” Zaine smiled sheepishly and tilted his head to the side.
“In case you’ve forgotten, we have to go meet with Lady Tsunami and Lord Kyusai,” said Ryu sheathing his sword and standing.
“I know that. I meant after.” Zaine kept his smile as he stood.
“After? After you’re going shopping for groceries.”
“What?! That’s not fair, Ryu. I did the shopping last time.”
“If you define shopping as dragging me along, buying the whole damn store, and making me pay for it then, yes, you did do the shopping last time. This time, though, I would like you to try shopping without me…and without getting a lawsuit or restraining order from the store.”
“But, Ryu, that wasn’t my fault! All I wanted was to get the best bottle of sake on the shelf.”
“I know. The tallest shelf in the store with the most expensive brand at the very top and you just had to climb it. You got the bottle, and broke every other one on the fall down.”
“Fine then! If I go shopping I get to cook dinner.”
“Like hell you get to! Every time you cook you either end up blowing up the kitchen, lighting it on fire, or lighting some other part of the house on fire. Or you spare the kitchen and destroy some appliance. Last time you nearly put us both in the hospital for third-degree burns!” Ryu finished the statement with a little smile, recalling the event. He then headed towards the bathroom to get dressed, Zaine following close behind begging to be let do dinner. “If I let you make dinner will you shut up?” asked Ryu just as they reached the bedroom.
Zaine’s eyes grew big and watery at the thought of cooking for his lover again. With a loud ‘Ryuuuu!’ he jumped the tall man, knocking him onto the bed. “Thank you, thank you! THANK YOU!!! I promise this time I won’t blow anything up.”
“You say that every time…” Ryu smiled and rolled them over so that he was pinning his baka down. Slowly he leaned in and placed a passionate kiss on the boy’s lips. It was neither hungry or lustful, just loving and soft. The kiss seemed to last forever while Ryu’s hands made their way up Zaine’s shirt and slowly caressed his chest and nipples.
They broke the kiss only for a moment to breathe before once again binding lips. Ryu’s skillful tongue pushed its way into Zaine’s mouth and then the battle for dominance began between the two muscles. Very carefully, Ryu allowed his hands to make their way down his lover’s hips and thighs. Zaine softly moaned into Ryu’s mouth at the touch of those fingers on his legs. He allowed another moan to escape from his mouth when Ryu’s hands firmly cupped his buttocks.
Zaine couldn’t help but buck his hips when he felt Ryu’s fully hard erection rub against his own through the pair of jeans that the older man was wearing and the pair of shorts he was wearing. The friction between their two rods was exhilarating. This time it was Zaine who broke the kiss with a loud moan.
Ryu smiled at this display of exotic behavior. Whenever the two made love or shared long moments together the boy just let himself go. He never held anything back or suppressed his emotions. “Tell me, Zaine,” Ryu’s voice became low and husky as he took the boy’s shirt off and began to kiss and nibble at his neck, “what is it that you want?”
“You. I want you in me.”
“Your wish is my command…” Ryu’s voice faded and all that could be heard was the moaning of the smaller man. Ryu had, somehow, taken off Zaine’s shorts and was now taking his whole erection into his mouth. He started bobbing his head up and down slowly then quickened his pace. A few times he stopped at the head and swirled his tongue around the tip teasingly. This drove Zaine wild and he shifted and wailed his arms on the bed. Ryu taunted him a little longer, tasting his essence and lapping up his precum, before taking him in whole again.
“Ryu, don’t tease me!” Zaine said feeling his climax building. After a few more bobs of his lover’s head he arched his back and came.
Ryu crawled up to meet Zaine’s gaze. He could see the older man was licking traces of semen off of his lips. The look on Ryu’s face was that of pure satisfaction. He loved hearing the boy make the noises of pleasure. To him it was like a drug—one of addicting preportions.
His eyes caught a glimpse of the clock on the nightstand. It was getting late. They had to meet with Tsunami at 1:30 and it was already 12:50. It would take them at least half an hour to get to the park where they were meeting. Not to mention the time it would take for Zaine to snap out of his daze, which always happened after having Ryu’s lips on his body. “Come on, brat. We need to get ready to go.”
Zaine remained motionless, with no intention of answering, until Ryu chucked a pillow at his face. Then he snapped out of his daze and threw the pillow right back. “What did you hit me with the pillow for?” asked Zaine with the cutest angry face you ever saw. He made fists with his hands and then put them on his hips. “Can’t you let me have a moment of peace to enjoy your affection?”
“Not today. If we’re late for this little ‘get together’ then Tsunami might actually ban us from the authorized personal sector of Tokyo.” Ryu gave him a look that said ‘dumbass’.
“So. Would that really be so bad?” asked Zaine in a low hurt voice. He knew that glance very well. It was one given to him at least ten times a day.
“Don’t act stupid. You know it would be.”
“Ryu?”
“What is it?”
“Don’t you ever just want to live a normal life?”
Ryu stared at him for a moment and then answered, “Yes, but then you come to realize that people would still try to kill us. And even if they didn’t I could never really adjust to a life with no fighting.”
Ryu’s words made sense to Zaine. Just as his partner had said, they could never really adjust to a life without fighting. Zaine couldn’t and knew that he would never even want to try. It was in their blood. They were also thankful for it because if not for him wanting to fight demons, he would have never found Ryu again. “Yeah…”
“Hey! Stop spacing out. It’s already 1:10 and you’re not even dressed.”
“That’s your fault,” said Zaine pulling his shorts on and locating his shirt. “You were the one that stripped me, you rapist pervert!”
“Whatever, you know you love it.” Ryu turned and headed for the bathroom.
Forty-five minutes later…
Zaine and Ryu walked to the ledge that over looked the ocean. It was the most popular spot in the park, but for some reason today it was empty. Empty except for Tsunami and Kyusai who stood entangled in each other’s arms looking at the sea, gently breathing as the breeze blew through their hair. The two looked almost magical in the light of the sun.
The two sorcerers gazed on in such awe. They hoped that one day they could look like that. Look like they had been together since the beginning of time.
Tsunami slowly turned her head and looked at the two sorcerers. Her red hair danced in the wind so beautifully and gracefully. Those yellow orbs reflected in the sun and her majestic black tail, which had a white tip, swayed in rhythm with the ocean waves. Still wrapped in her lover’s arms, she gave a fragile smile. Her lightly tanned skin shone smooth and soft.
“Hey! Uh, sorry we’re late. We got caught up,” said Zaine cheerfully making his way over to the couple. “We were in the back sectors doing something very important.”
“In back of who doing what?” Tsunami asked with a smirk, knowing that the sorcerers were lying. At this the two sorcerers blushed.
Ryu stared at her for a moment. She said it so understandingly, as if staring at the sea for an extra twenty-five minutes was normal. He admitted that they were usually five to ten minutes late. Twenty-five though? Shouldn’t she be angry? Shouldn’t she be threatening to kill us? “So what did you want to see us about?” Ryu asked, still confused by her calm behavior.
“Is there anything wrong with wanting to spend a nice afternoon with friends?” Tsunami smirked, walking towards them and breaking hers and Kyusai’s embrace.
“No, but you don’t have the time of day right now to play around.”
“Clever. We wanted to know if there have been any sudden changes in the way that the 252nd Sector (section of Yokohama where vampires are permitted to roam without authorization) has been behaving.”
“Not that we’ve seen. Why?” Ryu searched Tsunami’s face for the answer but failed to find it. Damn she’s good at these mind games, Ryu thought to himself. No matter how good anyone gets they just can’t see any more than she’s willing to show them.
“The other day we caught a vampire in the 874QR2 Region (Kyoto)”, said Kyusai, finally stepping towards them and away from the railing. “He was unauthorized and when we asked him why he entered the Forbidden City he only pointed at the full moon.” His green eyes shone such focus and possibly all the secrets in the world. Like Tsunami, his actions were impossible to read.
“So what does that mean?” Zaine asked with a baffled expression on his face.
“Something scared him.” Kyusai’s expression remained emotionless as he pushed some locks of hair from in front of his eyes.
“And?”
“Zaine, there isn’t a creature alive, or dead, that vampires fear. Not even Tsunami. Vampires you could say are the closest creatures to immortal that you can get.” Kyusai looked at the two sorcerers who had a surprised look on their faces as he finished his sentence.
“That’s impossible!” Zaine’s tone turned annoyed. “We’ve scared away many vampires.”
“That vampire wasn’t scared for his life,” Tsunami turned away from all three men and spoke quietly, “he was afraid for his people. No one has ever worried vampires enough to make them think that their species will die out. Together vampires are invincible. This isn’t just a case of dysfunction. The dead don’t go crazy.”
“So what do you propose?” Ryu put his hand on Zaine’s shoulder, trying to get him to calm down.
“All we ask is that you keep your eyes open. Needless to say, at the moment we have no information to work with. So I am unable to give you any further orders.” Tsunami remained focused and turned away from them.
“You are dismissed,” Kyusai informed them, walking to his lover, wrapping his white wings around her and resting his head on her shoulder, permitting his creamy white hair to cover his closed eyes.
Back home…
“What a waste of time. I could have laid on the bed for hours in my little daze! Oh no, though, she had to call us there for nothing.” Zaine sat on the bed, pouting loudly.
“Not as if dazing off was any better. Besides, you still have to go shopping.” Ryu looked at Zaine with lustful eyes. He walked over from the door, where he had been standing, and sat down next to his small lover. “By the way, the sooner you get back the more time we’ll have to cuddle and play before bedtime. I know you’d love to.” He slowly leaned over and swirled his tongue in Zaine’s ear.
Zaine squealed lightly and blushed. Ryu knew exactly how to get his baka to do what he wanted. He sometimes hated this fact. On the other hand, Zaine didn’t mind that his lover knew how to please him. It was a price to pay for happiness. “O-okay, but you better not go to sleep early again! I might just rape you in your sleep tonight if you do. Last time I waited three hours to pay and when I got home you were already asleep.” Zaine twitched his nose and stood up. He gracefully walked to the door, down the hall, and out the front door.
Ryu sat there for a moment, lost in thought. “Maybe tonight I’ll actually give him his ‘prize’. Who knows, this could end up being fun.”
Some time later…
“Yes! I did the shopping in record time!” Zaine, very loudly, chanted to himself as he made his way back home with the groceries. “This time I’ll make sure that he didn’t fall asleep. Hmm…maybe I’ll take a shortcut home and surprise him even more.” A sneaky smile crept up to Zaine’s face and graced his lips. The thought was just so motivating.
The sun had long since gone down and the moon was shining brightly. Zaine took a deep breath of the night air and walked on. He had decided to take the quickest way home, through a back alley. It was a dark place where lots of homeless, bored, or just crazy people hung out. He had once been one of those crazy people, before he met Ryu, who just went there to prove that they’re tough.
Zaine could see the end of the alley. Beyond there, his house and lover lay waiting for him to grace them with his presence.
He was almost at the junction where the alley met the street when he was stopped by a sudden noise. It was a deep breathing sound that seemed both hungry and vicious. Very slowly Zaine turned around and saw two red, angry eyes. He stepped back, noticing that the eyes were coming closer. It was too dark to make out the body to which those orbs belonged. Soon enough, though, the creature was in the rays of the streetlight.
Zaine stared in horror and amazement. The creature that stood before him was an animal that had gone extinct centuries ago, so how could it possibly be…? Zaine stepped back and stumbled over. His groceries had fallen and lay scattered around his feet. Fighting to keep in a scream, Zaine kept his eyes focused on this thing. He was too mesmerized to look away and too scared to move any further.
A gasp escaped the sorcerer’s mouth as the creature stepped forward. It stood eight feet tall, black fur, huge claws, and pearl white teeth. Zaine could feel the weight of the animal, if you could call it that, every time it moved. It made the ground shake and the street light wobble. He knew though that all the weight came from the fact that it was muscular. It was a thin muscular creature with a broad chest and flat stomach. He stood on two legs, though capable of being on four. Its pointy ears perked up as it sniffed the air and stepped forward once again.
Zaine couldn’t blink, move, or even breathe. His mind was blank and his eyes frozen. He wanted to scream for help. He wanted Ryu to come and save him from this “monster”. He didn’t scream though. And Ryu didn’t come.
Inside the house…
Ryu stared at the alarm clock on the nightstand. It was already 10:30. Zaine never staid out this late. Especially when Ryu was waiting for him to come home and cuddle in bed. “Where is that little brat? What could possibly take so long?”
Ryu stood from where he was sitting. He slowly crept over to the bedroom window and pushed open the curtains. It was a full moon. Such a beautiful thing it was, just sitting in the sky gracing the Earth with its light. “That idiot probably stopped somewhere to look at the sky and lost track of time. When he gets home his ass is mine!”
Outside…
Zaine struggled to his feet after being thrown against the pavement. His whole body hurt. With no warning, that huge creature had just jumped at him and started thrashing, scratching, and biting him.
Blood ran down his face and arms. He had an enormous hole on his right shoulder where the creature had dug his fangs. Slowly the blood trickled down his chest and arm, forming little puddles at his feet. His vision was blurring quickly as the sweat and crimson liquid dripped into his eyes.
Zaine wobbled on his feet as he leaned on a nearby brick building for support. His legs felt like they were toothpick-thin and would break at any moment, unable to support his weight. His left arm dangled at his side, completely useless. Zaine knew that it was most likely broken. It also hurt to breathe as a number of his ribs were probably busted too. “Ryu’s gonna kill me for getting so roughed up. And because of you,” Zaine stood as straight as he could, “I won’t get any cuddle time tonight because I’ll be too busy healing in the hospital!”
Zaine, painfully, lifted his right arm into the air. With his hand erect, he seemed to try to clasp the air as electricity emitted from his shoulder and traveled the length of his arm. Once in his palm it sparked a violent indigo until Zaine brought his hand to the ground with force. He had punched the ground and sent the lightning towards the creature. It jumped from his hand in two rays and traveled almost like a snake. It would hit the ground, stripping it of pavement and concrete, then jump only to hit the ground again.
It danced as it made its way across the street, swerving to avoid and go around objects in its way. It made one final leap before crashing down on the creature. “Let’s see you survive this,” said Zaine as he watched the struggling inside the prison of lightning. He stood from where he was kneeling from hitting the ground and spoke an incantation, “To the gods who are mightier than Heaven. For the unbreakable will of the dead, I invoke thee Vicious. Lend me your strength. Infuse me with your power so that I may destroy the fools who stand in our way. Take pity and grant their souls freedom. Heaven’s Prophecy!”
Vicious, elemental spirit of lightning, floated behind Zaine. He mimicked all of Zaine’s moves as he did a series of movements with his arm. As he brought it down to the ground with an open hand so did Vicious. Red veins ran across the pavement, what was left of it, and caused the pillar of electricity to explode.
Inside the house…
Ryu nearly stumbled off the couch when he heard the loud explosion that was coming from in front of his house. He stood up and walked to the front door. He only cracked the door and a powerful cloud of smoke and dust flung the door open. Ryu, who was thrown back by the door and wind, covered his mouth and nose and closed his eyes. The dust quickly cleared from the room. Ryu got to his feet again and ran outside.
Ryu’s eyes widened as the scene in front of him halted him. Zaine was standing—more like leaning—against the brick wall nearest to him. The light of the street light flickered on and off and illuminated Zaine slightly. “That’s for making me drop my groceries,” Zaine’s voice came raspy and soft, “and for making me late and missing my cuddle time…” His voice faded away and he fell to the ground.
Ryu ran over to the motionless body on the floor. Zaine was covered in blood and cut everywhere. Though unconscious, Zaine heard one quiet whisper fall off of Ryu’s lips, “I’m so sorry.”
Two months later…
Zaine stirred in his bed and willed his eyes to open. His muscles hurt and his vision was fuzzy. He tried to look around but everything seemed to be blended together into one big blot. “Where am I?” Zaine’s voice came slowly and raspy. When no response came he slowly lifted his hand and reached out to grab something—anything.
He flinched slightly at the feel of someone taking his hand in their own. It was warm and comforting. The hand was bigger than his and both skinny and strong. He tried to focus his eyes on the form in front of him, but to no avail. His eyes just wouldn’t cooperate with him. Finally, though, he was forced to close his eyes as it hurt to keep them open.
“You shouldn’t try too hard right now,” Ryu’s voice was kind and soft, “you’re still healing.” His hand tightened over the smaller man’s and found that Zaine had begun to tremble. “What’s wrong?”
“I was scared, Ryu. That thing…what was it?” Zaine’s eyes began to water while still closed. His hand was sweating and continued to shake violently.
Ryu stared at his lover for a moment. He was really scared. Zaine had fought against the most horrifying of demons and never once flinched. Yet now he lay here injured and frightened. What could have done this? If Zaine could have seen the older sorcerer he would have been able to read his mind. Ryu’s thoughts just showed so plainly on his face.
In his mind, Ryu was thankful that Zaine could not see him—he would laugh at the older man. When Ryu had first found Zaine his heart had completely stopped. He had been afraid that his little baka wouldn’t pull through. Since that night not a moment went by that Ryu wasn’t at Zaine’s side. For the first few days Ryu had even refused to eat, sleep, and drink in fear that his lover would wake up and he would not be there to embrace the boy.
Ryu kissed Zaine’s hand and placed it back down on the bed. He felt sorry for him because Zaine had no idea that he had been in a coma for two months. Ryu allowed a silent tear to run down his face and fall onto Zaine’s resting hand.
“You’re crying…why?” Zaine turned his head to face Ryu, but never opened his eyes.
“Don’t you know? Retard, I was worried about you! Don’t you ever do that to me again…”
Ryu dropped to his knees and placed his face in the palms of his hands.
Zaine forced his eyes to open. He still couldn’t see very well, but at least he could make out the figure at his side. Slowly he willed his body to move. It hurt like hell, and he noticed that he could now move his left arm—only slightly. His head hurt and he felt nauseous. Finally, he was able to sit up and turn his body to look at Ryu. “Why?”
“What?” Ryu looked up at Zaine who was sitting at the edge of the bed. “Are you that stupid?!”
“I’m not a child. I know how to fight and I know how to run. Maybe I’m not the smartest person in the world but I should know when to run. I just stood there. I couldn’t move, I couldn’t even think. It’s my fault I got all banged up. So please don’t cry.”
“You’re a fool! Don’t you get it? If anything ever happened to you I would have nothing left in the world.” Ryu got to his feet and sat on the bed next to Zaine. He stared at the smaller man whose eyes watered. Slowly, Ryu raised his hand to wipe away his lover’s falling tears. “I’ll tell you as many times as you want to hear it: I love you and you mean the world to me.”
Zaine’s eyes continued to water as he stared at the older sorcerer. The look in his blue eyes was that of pure love. They were so soft and beautiful, appearing a dark blue in the dark room. In a way, they almost seemed to glow with the radiance of Ryu’s soul. “Ryu. I know you care, but don’t make me feel helpless. Just promise me that if I fall you’ll always be there to catch me. I won’t let go if I know that I’ll die.”
Ryu took Zaine’s face in his hands and gently pressed his lips against the others. It was not a hungry motion but a graceful kiss. Though brisk, it left Zaine in one of his little “dazes”. Carefully, Ryu pushed Zaine back into the bed, still pretty dazed, and tucked him in. “Should you need anything, just call.” With that, Ryu left the room and closed the door behind him.
