Marie sat on the cold, hard bench and waited. Waited to escape the horrors that were surrounding her. She shuddered and pulled her coat on tighter as a cool breeze swept around her. She heard a loud rumble and saw the bus approach. After quickly gathering her things, she hurried onto the bus and took a seat as far back as she could. She then closed her eyes and wouldn’t open them until she knew she was safe. Safe from her drunk father who beat her endlessly; safe from the mother who gave up hope and did nothing to stop the beatings; safe from a brother who once protected her from their father, but now took part in the beatings and worse.
Marie was 20 years old and was running away from the only home she’s ever known. She has little money and no destination planned. She took what little money she had and purchased a bus ticket out of the town, as far away as her wallet would allow. She was never planning on going back, no matter what she encountered.
Two hours later, she stepped off the bus in a town totally foreign to her. It was very late now, probably 3am. Marie looked around for a cheap motel but found none. She started walking down the street looking for anyplace that could shelter her for the remainder of the night, but found none.
“Well well well…. Aren’t you a pretty one?” a voice said behind her.
Marie froze and clutched her bag even tighter. She slowly turned around and faced a woman in her mid-thirties. Judging by the way she looked and dressed, Marie knew instantly she was working the streets. She watched as the woman eyed her up and down. Marie knew that people found her attractive; she had light auburn hair that curled slightly to frame her face. She had a petite body and a slender face with pouty lips. She didn’t like the way the woman was looking at her.
“What do you want from me?” Marie asked quietly. “I have very little money --”
The woman started laughing. “Darling, I can easily make up to $400 in one night. I don’t want your money. I can tell by the looks of you that you’re gonna need it.”
Marie smiled slightly as the woman started laughing again. The woman stopped laughing and looked at her again. “My name is Crystal.” She stuck out her hand. Marie took it hesitantly. “I’m Marie.”
Crystal started walking. “Walk with me kid.”
“So… Marie… I take it you\'re new here. Where are you staying?”
Marie looked down. “Actually, I’m not sure. I don’t have much money. I just sorta ran without a destination in sight.”
Crystal led her to the corner of an intersection. “Darling, I ain’t gonna lie. You’re pretty and have a nice little body. You can easily make $100 with one customer.”
Marie stopped suddenly. “Wha-- customer? What are you implying?”
Crystal threw out her arms. “Look at all these customers, hungry with desire. Give them your body and they’ll give you the cash.” Crystal patted her on the cheek. “Think about it doll. Tell me, are you… a virgin?”
Marie looked up quickly. She wasn’t. Thanks to Carl. Marie got up quickly and turned away from Crystal so she couldn’t see the tears forming in her eyes. Carl. She looked off in the distant as her mind went back to that horrible night….
