For What The Devil Fears

Chapter One

*~*~*~*

\'Heaven nor Hell, you\'ll never touch. As a child of Taboo, alone, forever shall you be.\'

*~*~*~*

Tokyo - August 15th, 1932

\"I have done nothing! What do you want from me?\"
\"You are a demon. I want nothing more then to see you parish!\"

The preist, clad in his ceremonial robes placed his hands together before him.

\"But I shall never parish, for I am the cursed, the damned.\"
\"Then I shall seal you away within the darkness fro whence you came! Alone forever. Just as the damned should be!\"

A dark light shown forth from the holy man\'s hands, making time seem to stand still. The empty void of darkness closed in on the demon. The air became stale and thick with decay.

\'...alone forever, shall you be.\'

No matter how much time passes, words filled with such hatred are never forgotten. They linger like the stench of death.

\'...alone...\'

\"Alone...\" came the final words from pale lips of a soul that never truely existed.

*~*~*~*

72 years later...

*~*~*~*

Tokyo - August 14th, 2004

\"Congradulations Mr. Matsuri, you have managed to fail yet another test.\"
\"Uhn. Come on teach. I had to help with an...\"
\"No excuses. Keep it up and your sure to fail this class mister. And I really don\'t want to have to deal with you another year\"
\"Yes ma\'am.\"
\"Good going Shiro! Now your grandpa won\'t take us to Kyoto with him tomorrow for sure.\"
\"Don\'t worry. I just won\'t tell him, yet.\"
\"Uh huh.\" Toro turned to their other friend Kyo and rolled his eyes.
\"Oh yeah, I forgot. I have to take my cousin his homework. So I have to go there before going to your house Shiro.\"
\"Okay. We\'ll just go with you.\" nodded Shiro.
\"That\'s if we ever get out of class.\" moaned Toro.

*~*~*~*

\"What the hell took you losers so long?\"
\"Shiro and Toro had to clean up, again.\"
\"Figures.\"
\"What\'s your problem Lei? Not like you have anything better to do.\"
\"Ha Ha! Very funny Shiro.\"

Standing at 6\'1, with dark hair and eyes, eighteen year old Shiro Matsuri was the envy of all with his bad boy image. Women and men alike wanted him. It was just to bad for them that he\'s extremely picky.

\"Can we just go now?\"
\"Why do you wanna go so bad? We\'re just going to Shiro\'s house. We don\'t leave till tomorrow morning.\" asked Toro.
\"The junior high lets out soon, and all the girls stop to buy charms on Fridays.\" answered Shiro with a smirk.
\"Oh...I see. Lei, you sly perv.\" smiled Toro.
\"Last time he talked my grandpa into letting him wear one of my outfits and let him sell some charms.\"
\"Hey! I just wanted to help your grandpa out! That\'s all!\"
\"Whatever dude. Kyo, how far is it to your cousin\'s?\"
\"A few blocks around the corner, so we don\'t need to take the bus.\"

Idol chit-chat continued as the small group of teens made their way down the street. Just like Kyo said, they were there in no time. After a few minutes Kyo was back.

\"Okay guys, we can go now.\"
\"Bout time.\" sighed Lei.

After a few minutes of walking they realized that they must have taken a wrong turn.

\"I\'ve lived in Tokyo my whole life and I don\'t have a fucking clue to WHERE the hell we are!\" shouted Toro.
\"Look. There\'s a shoppe. Lets ask for directions back to the main road.\" chirped Kyo.

The other three turned to look at a rundown, partially boarded up building with the word \"Prophecy\" written in purple paint over the door that had an \"open\" sign in it.

\"I\'m not going into some charm store, dude. It\'s a chick store man.\" retorted Lei.
\"Dude.\" Toro gave him a look like he, Lei was the biggest idiot on the face of the earth.
\"Or we can do like Kyo said and go into that shoppe and get directions...\" corrected Lei.

Kyo, Toro, and Lei headed across the street to the shoppe leaving Shiro to take up the rear.

\"Idiots.\" laughed Shiro.

*~*~*~*

The shoppe smelled like old, stale paper. Shelfs were filled with all sorts of coloured liquids in various shaped bottles. There was not a girl in sight. But behind one of the many glass cases that were filled with amulets, gems, and stones of all colours stood a large elderly man.

\"Can I help you boys with something?\"
\"Um, we\'re kinda lost. How do we get back to...\"
\"Aigori High?\" finished the old man.
\"Uh, yeah. How did you know?\"

The elderly man just smiled.

\"This guy is totally creepy.\" Toro whispered. Kyo and Lei nodded their agreement with wide eyes.
\"We\'re not going to buy anything, so save your hocus pocus, black magic crap for some tourist.\" Shiro stated with a stern look.
\"I sell nothing of the black arts my dear boy.\"
\"Then what is all this?\"
\"Some use it for protection. Others use it as a form of weapontry.\"
\"For who?\" asked Kyo.
\"Not who, but what.\" corrected the shopkeep.
\" \"What\"?\"
\"Demons.\"
\"Demons? We use none of this at my temple.\"
\"It\'s not for your normal Demons who posess people. Demons that roam the earth, that fight Angels to protect humans...\"
\"Since when did Angels harm humanity?\"
\"For a future priest, you sure don\'t know much about the \"Elite\" and the ones they serve. There are certain humans that posess enourmous power. These humans are feared, for they have the power to free the damned. People...like you. Shiro Matsuri.\"
\"How?\"
\"Not how, but why?\"
\"Huh? Shiro...?\" whined Kyo concerned.
\"Why are you here?\"
\"Because we\'re lost you creepy old bastard!\" shouted Lei.
\"Everything happans...for a reason.\" whispered Shiro.
\"Correct. So why, are you here?\"
\"...\" Shiro stood there looking down at his shoes.
\"Listen you ancient asshole, leave Shiro alone!\"
\"It\'s alright Toro. I don\'t know why.\" he said as he stared the old man down.
\"Here. Maybe this will help you find the answer to why you stumbled into my store.\" he smiled.

The old man handed Shiro a old jewel crested gold box.

\"Seventy-two years ago, a battered and bloody priest stumbled in here and gave that to me, knowing that those who seek to use it wrongly could never take it from here. He said that it contained emence darkness, the likes of which he nor I had ever seen. He didn\'t go into to much detail. I never saw him again after that. I\'ll never forget how frighten he sounded when he spoke of the evil within that artifact. I placed it inside that box and put it in the safe. Its been there ever since. I\'m sure he would want me to give it to you. Rei Matsuri was not a fool and he would never leave it with someone he didn\'t trust.\"
\"Rei? My great-grandfather gave you this?\"
\"Yes. So its only right that you should have it. Seventy-two years is a long time. Hopefully they no longer seek it.\"
\"They who?\" This time it was Lei to ask a question.
\"Others like the one your great-grandfather condemned. But your grandfather, I\'m sure will fill you in on more details, when the time is right.\"
\"Yeah, come on Shiro lets go...\" Kyo said pulling on his are.

Toro and Lei were already on their way out.

\"Uh...thanks?\"
\"Anytime.\"

*~*~*~*

\"Dude, he was creepy.\" laughed Toro.
\"Um...guys. Look.\" pointed Lei.
\"Huh? Its the school. But?\"

They turned around to find nothing but an empty parking lot.

\"Let\'s just go and never speak of this again, okay?\" suggested Lei.
\"Right.\"

Lei, Toro, and Kei turned and headed in the direction of Shiro\'s house. Shiro stood in the middle of the sidewalk looking down at the little gold box. Opening it, inside was a silver ring. On the outside of the band was an Angel facing a Demon, and on the inside there was writing, a language he couldn\'t understand. Looking back at the empty parking lot he, unaware of his actions, slipped the ring on his finger.

\'...alone...\'

Liquid silver eyes, darkly lined with thick, long black eyelashes and thin, high arched eyebrows flashed before his.

\'...alone...\'
\"Shiro?\"
\'...alone forever...\'
\"Shiro?!\"
\'...shall you be...\'
\"SHIRO!\"
\"Huh?\"
Dude, what\'s wrong?\" asked Lei.
\"Oh, nothing. I was just thinking about what that man said.\"
\"Don\'t worry about it. I think he was some crazy stalker dude or something.\" stated Toro.
\"Come on Shiro, lets go.\" smiled Kyo.
\"Yeah.\"

With not another word about the man and the disappearing shoppe they continued onto the shrine.

\"Boys, dinner!\" shouted the small elderly priest.
\"Gramps! Don\'t yell so loud, they\'re in the next room.\" Miki said covering her ears.

Miki was Shiro\'s cousin. Like Shiro, after the death of her parents she came to stay with her grandpa. She enjoyed living at the temple and her grandfather was teaching her to be a shrine maiden.

\"Well I wouldn\'t have to yell if they came the first time I called them.\"

Grandpa Matsuri was a short, stubborn man. But he enjoyed having his only two grandchildren with him.

\"Shiro! Toro! Lei! Kyo! Get in here or I\'ll make you all do Miki\'s chores while her and I go to Kyoto tomorrow!\"

Not even two seconds later the four boys where at the table, seated and waiting for Miki to serve dinner. Miki and grandpa just laughed as the boys sat there hoping to whatever god was listening that they would not have temple clean up duty.

\"You boys should get to bed early tonight. You too Miki. I don\'t want any trouble tomorrow morning with trying to get you all up. I don\'t wanna miss the train.\"
\"Yes sir.\" was said in unison.
\"Good. So, what took you so long to get home today? I was sure Lei would have been here to help me with this afternoon\'s sale.\"
\"Well, I needed to take my cousin his work. So it was my fault.\" answered Kyo.
\"Grandpa?\"
\"Yes Shiro?\"
\"Have you heard of a shoppe called \'Prophecy\'?\"
\"Why? Did you go in there?\"
\"We only asked for directions.\" Kyo answered hastly.
\"I\'ve heard of it. The shopkeep, Gray, he was a friend of my fathers. he sells stuff to wannabe-Demon hunters. The charms he sells are pretty powerful from what I hear.\"

Toro leaned over to Lei and whispered,

\"I thought we weren\'t going to talk of this again?\"

Lei just shrugged.

\"But if its just items for use against Demons, then why did I feel such tremendous dark magic?\"
\"It\'s the relics. All the relics he sells are made by Demons themselves.\"
\"Wow. Nothing like using their own toys against them.\" murmured Lei.
\"They\'re not to use against them. They are for THEM to use.\"
\"...\"
\"The man, he spoke of Demons who fight Angels to protect humans.\" entered Kyo.
\"Well I suppose it won\'t hurt to tell you. There are certain humans who posess the power to remove the curse of eternal damnation and free all the Demons from Hell. Giving the human power to take over Earth, maybe even Heaven. Angels decend from Heaven to kill these people, but there is a group of Demons that prevent that. They are called the Elite. Thay are the one hundred most strongest Demons in Hell. When one dies, another is born in its place. They are feared by all and cherished by Satan himself.\"

The old man waited awhile for this to sink in before he continued.

\"My father was one of these said humans. Seventy-two years ago, a Demon came to him, to protect him. He would hear none of it. He sealed the Demon away, didn\'t even try to defend itself. In the end, it was a Angel who killed my father. Just as the Demon said.\"

\"...alone...forever, shall you be...\" Shiro whispered.
\"Shiro, are you alright?\"

Everything around him went black. the air smelled thick with decay. He couldn\'t breath. As the darkness began to spin he lost conciousness.

\"Oh my God! Shiro!\" shrieked Miki.

+~+~+~+

On the other side of town...

\"Did you do as you we\'re told?\"
\"Yes my Lord. I made them go straight into that old creep\'s shop. The ring is no longer in his protection.\"
\"Good. And the decendant has it?\"
\"Yes. Everything is going as planned my Lord. They are to arrive in Kyoto in time for the festival.\"
\"Perfect.\" came a evil, fanged smile.
\"Soon, little brother will awaken. And you will have more power then the King, master.\" giggled a small Demon with yellow eyes and purple horns.

August 15th, 2004 - 7am

\"Are you sure you feel well enough to travel Shrio?\" asked a concerned grandpa.
\"Yeah. You were out like a light.\"
\"Guys! I\'m alright. Honest!\"
\"Alright. But if you feel unwell again, tell me. Okay?\"
\"Don\'t worry Gramps, I will.\"
\"Alright then. Lets hurry, the taxi is on its way.\"
\"Oh yeah! Kyoto here I come!\" smiled Lei.
\"A weak away from Tokyo.\" murmured Kyo.
\"From school.\" added Toro.
\"From my mom and dad.\" laughed Lei.
\"From Mrs. Nakoshira.\" sighed Shiro.
\"Haha. Fail another test did we Shiro?\" laughed Miki.
\"What? No! What would make you think that?\"
\"Oh nothing.\"
\"Will you two get in the taxi already?\" shouted Lei.

After all the luggage and everyone was settled into the van, grandpa turned around from where he sat in the front.

\"What\'s this about failing a test?\"

The others just laughed as Shiro looked out the window and sighed.
