Simple kind of life

“Therefore, the coefficient of variation formula for the equation would be forty over two-hundred multiplied by one-hundred equals twenty percent, resulting in bonuses being paid equaling twice as variable as years of service. Furthermore . . . ”

The professor’s monotone voice rang out throughout the partially full lecture hall. Desiree sat in the back, ready to make a hasty exit as soon as the fifty minute class was over. Right now, however, she was dozing.

Statistics, although easy enough so far, had to the most boring class she had this semester. She was extremely good with math, but the teacher’s voice seemed to lull her to sleep almost every class period. Her head fell forward and she jerked it back up violently, hoping no one noticed her failed her failed attempts to stay awake.

Not too long afterward, she was jilted awake by the shuffling of feet and books. She opened her eyes to see students filing out of the hall. She looked to the front of the room, and seeing no homework posted, gathered her things and left. That was her last class, of the day and fortunately the department she worked in was closed for the day. She began making her way to her dorm, where she knew her roommate would be waiting so they could get a bite to eat.

Desiree was a second year college student, working as receptionist in the school’s economic department. She met her roommate, Nichole, a year earlier when they were both freshmen, and through hatred of their roommates at the time and a newly found friendship they decided to become roommates the next year. They shared the same interest and the same goofy sense of humor, which is why they got along so well. Sure enough, Nichole was waiting and starving.

“Let’s go, dawg.” she said the moment Desiree walked though the door.

Nichole, despite how badly she wanted to be black, was of 100% European decent and often voiced her envy of Desiree for being African-American. Desiree found it hysterical that Nichole had always wanted to be black, when she herself had wanted to be white when she was younger. They really were a perfect match.

“Wait a minute, Nick.” Desiree sighed at the other girl’s anxiousness, feeling her own stomach growling. “Let me set my book bag down at least, God!” She walked over to her bed, shedding her bag.

Nichole turned back to her computer and suddenly remembered a bit of information. “Oh, Curtis called for you today.”
“I know, he called on my cell phone too. I talked to him.” Curtis Bell, Desiree’s high school sweet heart and current boyfriend.

They had known each other for a good portion of high school, but didn’t get together until senior year. Two years later and they were still in love. Although separated by 500 miles because of their choices in schools, they remained passionate and faithful to each other. He did have a jealous streak and a temper that flared up every now and then, but other than that he was a sweetheart.

She often joked that he was like a pineapple; hard and prickly on the outside, sweet on the inside. “I’ve got something that’s hard on the outside for you. But you might had to suck out the sweetness.” was his usual innuendo retort.

“Let’s go” Dersiree finally said after finding her reflection in the mirror acceptable. The two girls headed to the dining hall, utterly ravenous, and once inside they loaded up their trays, taking full advantage of the buffet style setup.

If it was one thing Desiree was glad about, it was the fact that she wasn’t looking for a man. That way she could eat like a pig and not worry about who was watching, unless she wanted to be cute and flirty that day.

“Hey Desiree! Nick!” she heard someone calling them. “Over here!” it was a few people from their floor, motioning for them to sit with them. The two quickly made their was through the crowded seating area and to the table.

“Did you hear?” Mandy immediately asked them as they sat down. Mandy was a freshman girl who lived down the hall from them. She tended to be a little annoying and neurotic, not to mention the fact that she was dating the floor resident assistant, which was against the rules. Nonetheless she was a good person.

“What?” Nichole asked, mouth already full of food.
“This new guy that just transferred here moved into that empty room on out floor.”
“Oh yeah.” Desiree chimed in. “Aren’t we supposed to be having a floor meeting so we can meet him tonight?”
“Yep. It’s in another hour.” Mandy stated. The rest of the people continued eating while Desiree and Nichole dug into their food.

When they were done they stood outside while Nichole smoked a cigarette and Desiree listened to her go on about her problems with Angela, a girl Nichole was head over heals for (and a whole other story in itself).

About an hour later the two sat in the lounge on their floor, ready to meet this new person. It was the last person Desiree would have ever expected to see. “I’ll let him introduce himself.” their resident assistant was saying. In walked a tall young man and Desiree gasped as his eyes immediately centered on her.

“Issac.”
