The Taking of the Nightingale

There was no wind. The Nightingale was a sitting duck as the pirate ship moved closer towards it. Sir Martin appeared calm as he watched the huge ship approach. It was powered by many oars, no doubt manned by a crew below deck.

\"The one time in years that I sail out on my own, and this happens,\" Sir Martin said to himself. He knew the pirate ship would overtake the Nightingale in just a few minutes. His friends who usually sailed with him were away on a quest for the King. He would have to face these pirates on his own.

He could make out the lettering on the side of the pirate ship: FALCON.

Sir Martin had heard tales of a pirate ship called the Falcon. It was led by one Captain Terrence Hawk, a most ruthless and cunning pirate. Captain Hawk and his crew would attack ships, pillage and plunder, then set the ransacked ships on fire. They took no prisoners.

\"Prepare to be boarded!\" shouted a pirate on the Falcon. A cannon was aimed at the Nightingale.

Sir Martin stood calmly on deck as a dozen pirates of assorted shapes and sizes swiftly boarded the Nightingale. He offered no resistance.

Captain Hawk remained on the deck of Falcon. He watched his men board the Nightingale. The calm attitude of the tall young man of that yacht puzzled Captain Hawk. Usually victims of their raids would be panicking, screaming and running in all directions in a futile attempt to escape from the pirates, but not this fellow. Captain Hawk stared at the odd raven-haired man who calmly watched the pirates make off with whatever valuables and supplies they could find on board the Nightingale.

Hawk\'s first mate Gull marched over to Sir Martin and said, \"Either you\'re very brave or you do not have a complete grasp of the situation.\"

Sir Martin calmly replied, \"And what situation would that be, my good man?\"

Gull laughed and said, \"Your pretty little boat here is being pillaged and plundered by pirates! And you will be dead within the hour. Captain Hawk makes it a practice to take no prisoners. We will strip your little boat of its goods and then set it on fire with you still on board.\"

\"Oh,\" said Sir Martin as he stifled a yawn. \"That situation.\"

Gull stared at Sir Martin. \"But since you are giving us no trouble by not trying to put up any sort of a fight, I will spare you the pain of being burned alive. I will kill you first before leaving you here while your boat burns.\"

\"How decent of you,\" said Sir Martin.

\"It\'s the least I can do,\" said Gull. He looked at Sir Martin\'s fine garments. \"I like your clothes. Remove them. I don\'t want them to become stained with your blood when I stab you.\"

Captain Hawk observed all of this from the Falcon. He watched as Sir Martin undressed completely and handed his clothing to Gull. The tall sinewy lean young man stood completely naked on deck, yet he did not appear to be embarrassed by his state of undress. The other pirates paused in the plundering to see what was happening. Some of them pointed and laughed.

\"Thank you,\" said Gull as he took the clothing from Sir Martin.

\"Who is that remarkable man?\" Captain Hawk muttered under his breath. \"I must know more about him. A man who posseses such bravery and control of his emotions would make a fine addition to my crew.\"

Captain Hawk ran across the plank and boarded the Nightingale.

\"Gull! Stand down!\" ordered the captain as Gull was about to run his sword through Sir Martin\'s chest.

\"Yes, Captain Hawk,\" said Gull. He put his sword back into its sheath.

\"I will have a word with this young man,\" said Captain Hawk.

Suddenly the wind picked up. The air grew cold very quickly. Sir Martin began to shiver.

Gull stared in disbelief as he watched his captain remove his cape and wrap it around Sir Martin.

\"There. Can\'t have you catching cold,\" Captain Hawk said softly. Sir Martin gave him a puzzled look.

\"You are a fascinating young man,\" said the captain. \"Have you ever thought of becoming a pirate?\"

Gull frowned. He watched his captain put a friendly arm around Sir Martin as he led him away for a private conversation. Gull felt an intense dislike toward Sir Martin.
