In nomine Patris...

Chapter 1~

The church was always open, even late at night. The light from candles around the crucifix and tabernacle lit the area around the altar. The light illuminated the pure white cloth that adorned the stone table where bread and wine, symbolizing the body and blood of Christ, were sacrificed every Sunday. The rows of pews that would be filled with worshipers the next morning were now empty, save for one man, in the first row near the center.

He was dressed in all black, with a black hat resting on the pew behind him. His almost shoulder length red hair was pulled into to a ponytail at the base of his neck. His eyes were closed, not revealing their color. He was kneeling, his hands folded in prayer as whispered words came from his lips. “Pater noster, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum. Adveniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua, sucut in caelo et in terra.”

To anyone who maybe observing him he appeared to just be a late night worshiper. That is, unless they got close enough to see the gleam of two blades, resting beneath the hat on the pew. The light from the candles shadowed his face, distorting his otherwise calm features as he finished praying. “Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie, et demitte nobis debita nostra sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libera nos a malo. Amen.”

He made the sign of the cross as he finished the prayer and opened his eyes and looked to the crucifix above the altar. “In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen” The light reflected off his eyes, revealing their color to be a deep blue. He slowly rose from his kneeling position and moved his hat over on the pew. He picked up the two slightly curved blades and placed them in the sheaths that hung on his belt. The blades were hidden beneath the black fabric of his trench coat which swished lightly around his calves as he moved.

He picked up his hat as he moved away from the pew and into the aisle that led to the altar. The hat was held in his left hand as he genuflected on his right knee. “Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spititunctoncto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.” He said, making the sign of the cross once more, before rising to his feet and turning toward the doors of the church. As he passed through the archway he dipped his fingers in holy water and blessed himself. Once outside he put his on on his head and descended the stairs to the street.

“Well, w Loo Look who finally came back out.” A smooth voice said as his feet touched the pavement. “I gotta tell you Gael, for a murderer you sure do spend a lot of time in this church. What do you do in there for two hours every night before you go on a job?”

“Pray for forgiveness. The fifth commandment is ‘you shall not kill’, and willful murder is one of the four sins that cries to heaven for vengeance.” Gael said, walking away from the church as the other man who was hidden in the shadows, followed. “I would like to reach heaven someday.”

“I really don’t see what the big deal is. I figure that I’ll end up in hell no matter what, so why bother. It just means that I would actually have to make an effort to go into a church.”

“Sloth, when it is concerning the faith, is the last of the seven deadly sins.”

“Christ man! Do you have that whole damn Bible memorized or something?”

“Why are you here Alan?” Gael asked, ignoring the man’s last comment.

“The Boss just wanted to make sure that you made it out of that church in time to do the job. If you were running late or something I was supposed to come in there and drag you out.” Alan snorted quietly, “I’m just glad you made it out of there in time, or I would have actually have to go in there. All those statues of Saints or whatever make me queasy.”

“That’s lovely, thank you for telling me, now leave me be. I can’t do my job with you hanging around.” Gael said, walking a little faster.

“Ah fuck it. You were never any fun anyway.” Alan murmured as he walked away. “I’m going to find myself a whore or something.”

As he heard Alan walk away Gael bowed his head and whispered, “Lust, when concerning impure pleasure, is the third of the seven deadly sins.” He sighed and pulled his hat lower to shadow his eyes. As he walked he ran his instructions over and over in his head. But, the last part of the instructions stuck out in his mind the most.

Gael’s cell phone rang at 9:30 in the morning, waking him from his sleep. He groaned and rolled over in his bed, grabbing the phone from the night stand. “Gael here.” He said into the phone as he sat up in bed, causing the sheets to fall to his waist to reveal his muscular torso where numerous scars marred the skin.

“Gael, good work on your assignment last night.” The voice on the other end of the line said.

“Thank you sir.” Gael said as he climbed out of bed and pulled on a pair of faded blue jeans.

“I called this morning to give you another assignment. You know of Michael Starthers, the ring leader for that large drug ring, he is your target for tonight. You are to kill him quickly and then deal with the second part of this assignment.”

“The second part sir?”

“Yes, Starthers will have a young woman with him tonight. Do nill ill her. Knock her out and bring her back to your apartment until we can find somewhere else to put her.” Gael started to reject the assignment but the man on the phone cut him off. “The girl is valuable, do not let her escape.”

“Yes sir, it will be done.” Gael said reluctantly.

“Good, this is where you will need to be...” But, Gael hardly listened to his boss as he gave him the rest of the instructions. His mind was on the mystery girl, and why it was so important for his boss to have the her in a place where he controlled.
