This was beautiful. My mother raised 6 girls in East St. Louis...very rough neighborhood...but she did it by herself because my father died when I was younger. We were handed a lot of trouble because we were the only white kids at this school growing up and trust me...racism goes the other way too! Being little like that I thought there was something wrong with me because I was white and she taught me to be proud of who I am but to also learn why people treated me that way and to try to understand why they felt that way. My mother is amazing and I showed her your poem and she loved it as well. Thank you for sharing.
