This is such a powerful and heartwrenching little snippet, a gem of a tale that captures the quiet desperation of a drought-ravaged farm perfectly. The twist at the end is utterly delightful.

A good use of all the prompts. This reminded me of a documentary series I saw a few months ago about the dust bowl of the 30's in the US. I did find one small error:
Johm knelt in front of me before looking away.
That's obviously meant to be 'John'. Otherwise, a very interesting short story!
