Not a dark poem, by any stretch, but it reads as more of an opinion; war is the end for those who lost their lives. Therefore is it worth it? Can we avoid it? Do we want to avoid it?

I believe the poem represents the thoughts of an individual a soldier maybe in the midst of war/fighting, as you make reference to ‘I’ and then reference to ‘us'. A soldier, asking the question and trying to both understand and justify the reason for war and if it is all just a farce where the ulterior motive is power – Ultimately, of course.
