Loved it. Just ... loved it.
The reunion with his mother was fantastic and very true to character -- of course, because it's Nicky, it couldn't be as straightforward and angst-free as "Oh son, I missed you so much!"/"I love you, Mom!" with big hugs all around.
I love the thought of Nicky (King Nicky!) on the throne, with his mages Mags and Wendy on wooden chairs beside him. And Grim there as his chief advisor/righthand man to stir up & put down trouble.

Hey, gotta say I love your stuff! I wish the description/summary was a bit different or I would've checked this out ages ago.
One small note--you refer to a latent named Sharon until the end of chapter 11 when you begin to call her Sarah. Just confused me for a minute. Sorry if I'm repeating something you've already had pointed out to you a billion times.
