I keep coming back to this story over and over again, it is one of my absolute favourites and you are a super-talented author.

WHAT A CRAZY TWIST....YOU MAD GENIUS!!

Aww, your writing is as lovely as ever. The twist is fantastic. (I.e.: "Ariel" ends up with "Ursula?" Priceless.) Fairytales tend to be generally lacking in the build up into understanding/devotion-based romance, relying heavily on the whirlwind "love at first sight," which, romantic as you point out it is, does tend to remind me of Romeo/Juliet one-night teenage tragedy and leaves the heart wanting for a little realism. You, though, manage to take the classic tale, keep the necessary "Oh, be still, my heart...he's my one true love..." element, and yet stray away gradually into a more believable side-romance that takes over in the end.

And then, of course, the happily ever after. I really did fear I might be reading a tragedy (just for a second) at a couple points. (There's always the fear that "Oh no, I think our mer-prince would be so much more suited for the "evil" wizard...but what if HE doesn't figure this out in time?") But, alas, he did. So much the better for my mood too. The warm fluff bubbly feeling at the end was...well, just warm fluffy and bubbly; I'm sure you catch my drift. Needless to say, I quite enjoyed it. It's been too long since I last read your work. :)

I think I much prefer this version to the romanticized Disney tale. Beautifully written.
