This is a great start to the story. Very emotional. I like it. :) It's too bad about her parents though. I suppose a little rain must fall into everyone life after all. My only suggestion is to watch the grammar check a little more carefully.

"What she was a too-skinny girl of eighteen," could be "What she was was a too-skinny girl of eighteen,". Not all programs take those rare moments into account in their programming.
