I am overjoyed to see an update! I don't know why, but I really can't wait to read more of Kosin's story. It really captured me despite how hated his character has been. The whole Dothan thing just makes me feel claustrophobic, and I with Phidias I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. Sheridan and Soyinka seem relatively ok for now, but their housemates..? Riveting as always.

Your story is implausible. Your setting isn't in the dark ages, it's too advance for that. Even in the 19th century, women were not treated so poorly, and certainly rape was never albeit legalized. Despite the fact that no matter what, carriers would be forced into marriage at some point, they are still a prized commodity, which I think you lose focus of. Here they are beaten, constantly watch for potential rape, lose any mental stimulus, and have their inferior status to men beaten into them. This is ridiculous, and not because it's shocking, but because carriers are a RARE PRIZED COMMODITY. Based on your story, I am less shocked by the occasional suicide, than that there are so few. The fact that carriers grow up as men, until they're suddenly turned into hermaphrodites, means that they can never really be completely brainwashed into thinking they really ARE inferior. This means that suicide would be far, far more common, to the point that it would cripple the number of carriers, and seriously alarm the government. The response would then be either to stop treating the carriers with such blatant cruelty, or to automatically throw the carriers into padded rooms, attempt to keep all potentially harmful items away, and possibly to scrap the idea of using them as wives, and simply go right down to using them as breeding machines. I guess that's what I find the most unbelievable about your story: low suicide rates. If they were hermaphrodites from birth, then it wouldn't matter.
I guess this is a flame, but please take it as a compliment that I actually reviewed. This one detail annoys me, but otherwise I've been enjoying your story.

@ junoner
There are many regions around the world where the female part of the population is smaller, than the male part and women are treated like shit though - e.g. India or the rural areas of China. Female fetus are being aborted or little girls killed after birth because they are regarded as inferior to boys and as a burden to their family.
As to the amount of violence against carriers/females being exaggerated and it going unpunished being unrealistic: I just watched a documentary about Nicaragua. The society is build on Machismo. It happens regularly that schoolgirls are being raped by their teachers (and I'm talking about 12- and 13-year-olds). The committers are seldomly charged. On top of that, if the victim gets pregnant, she's not allowed to abort, no matter how young she is (Nicaragua is strongly influenced by Catholicism). Violence against women in general is seldomly charged - the number of women and girls being beaten, mutilated or killed by men is enormous, without their tormentors being punished.
As to the suicide rate - I'm convinced most people want to live. Women are mistreated badly all over the world, a.g. the regions I just mentioned, parts of Africa, parts of the “Islamic world”... and the female part of the population hasn't killed itself off yet (this might sound distasteful, I'm being polemic).
I apologies for any mistakes in spelling, grammar or stile. English is not my first language.

Sorry, should’ve let you answer for yourself probably but I couldn't resist;)
Is there any chance for a new chapter before Christmas? Love your work!

Correction!

Ok, so I take back what I said about mistreated women not committing suicide, either. But I’m still convinced that most people are able to live through an awful load of crap before they are ready to kill themselves.

If there was a f-in homophobe type char in the story. It'd be Harley. Because that's just RIDICULOUS. Gods. Shut up and get over it.
The spirits in the house that don't want him to conceive, I think that's Harley and James. Though they probably have different reasons, it's the same resulted conclusion. And all that negative energy and stress is weighing in on Sheri and making it hard for conception. Now i just hope that James or Harley don't do something like come up with an accident to make Sheri lose the baby o_o
Adrian needs to go out and learn about stuff man. For serious. That's all i gotta say.
Awww! :D Yay for Phidias XD And getting to go back to work! Now i think he just has to worry about the other bastards at work that would want to hurt him or try to get to Caddy! D: And it's probably not even going to be the same anymore D:

I love this soo much!
He, he, the ritual made me think of "The Ring" - didn't Samaras mother retreat to similar measures to get pregnant?^_^ But the juju man seemed ok in the end, so I hope the baby will also be. Sheridan and Aaron should definitely find a home of their own.
So glad and Phidias is allowed to work again!
I don't know how you do this, but Ivan Kosin has become my favorite character, besides Phidias of curse. In fact I love all of them. You’re great!

Exquisite as usually. About traditions - there is usually a good practical reason why people start doing things in a particular way. it becomes a problem when conditions and life starts changing and after some time the practical need doesn't exist anymore, but people are animals of habit and they keep doing things the way their ancestors had done and attaching some kind of deeper, religious or whatever meaning to those ways. It is funny that some people choose to wash regularly rather because they God told them so, than because it's healthy. Thus, I don't care for most of traditional believes much (like, a woman who sleeps with two many men is bad) because they often are not practical in present day situation. - just musings after the chapter.

Madly happy at update! And some luck for Sheridan and Aaron! But not for James. I wonder if it's Harley who's the bad spirit? Only wish I could see much more of what's happening to Kosin, but it will come I hope. That whole Dothan thing that Sean and co are doing just really f*ing pisses me off from start to finish. Thanks for sharing this story!
