Food for thought: it is the oxygen levels in air that controls the size of insects and arachnids. The higher the oxygen consentration, the bigger they get. This is why, millions of years ago, spiders the size of laptops and worker ants 4 inches long existed; there was something like 60 times more oxygen in the air than there is today*. When the oxygen levels dropped, their size did as well.

*I got this information from a Discovery Channel or Animal Planet documentry I saw several months ago, so some of the numbers might be a little off.
